man- i hope i can stay focused on just enjoying it.

dave- how do you qualify for kona?

basically have to be roughly top 5 in my age group.  Each IM race has x amount of spots allocated and they divide those up between the age groups. The larger age groups get more spots but every AG gets atleast 1.  Then they take the 1st ,2nd 3rd place, if anyone passes it goes to #4, if they pass it goes to #5, and so on.  Or just put your name in lottery. 200 slots. Final way is to go on ebay and bid on 1 of 4 spots, beginning bid $25k

Or you could become a majority stock holder in the WTC for probably about $10 Million.

I was thinking about entering the lottery - how many people enter it or what are the odds of being one of the 200 selected?

They never release the numbers, rumors are over 20k.  Plus for better chances you have to do the passport club for an additional $50 or $60.  Ends up costing $100 for a slim to none chance.  If you look who gets in you better have a good story or pay $500-$700 a month to be trained by Mark Allen online.   Good luck, I may enter one day but I still want to try and qualify a couple more times.

Yeah I think I'm just gonna hold off.  I figured it was just a waste of money.  I don't think I will ever be able to qualify though.

So I got my bike finally put back together last night after installing my bar end shifters.  I was pretty proud of myself for converting it into a triathlon bike.  I feel so much more confident now in making repairs or even reapirs on the road now that I have a good understanding of the bike and its components.

I am going to try and get a trainer ride in tonight.Tongue out

Never say never my friend!

Working on your own bike has to be cool. I don't know much about that stuff. I was thinking about starting to practice how to fix a flat just in case it ever happens to me. I have the kit attached to my bike but to be honest I would not have a clue what to do if and when that happens. Do you have any suggestions on how to do that? Should I just start taking off my tire. letting the air out and taking it off and putting it back on to learn?

Thanks and it looks like you are doing well - that is awesome.

Hey Team.

I am looking for some advice on a physical issue. 2 years ago I had some bursitis in my right hip (no doubt golf related). I went through a long series of trips to my physio guy but he could not get me back to completly 100%. He did a great job but I decided eventually to get a cortison shot in the hip and it worked like a charm to get me over the top and back to 100%. Anyway, after swimming, running and curling today I am starting to feel that deep ache again outside my right hip. I probably just strained my hip slightly because I did not do a proper warm up for curling and pushing out of the hack takes some dexterity and power. I am wondering if any of you have any suggestions? I want to nip this in the bud before it goes any farther. I normally do a great job stretching my IT band at both hips after physical activity so I am going to give it a good stretch tonight and a nice ice treatment.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

- It is great to be able to work on your own bike.

- Everyone needs to learn to change a flat.  Do it at home.  Front tire, back tire.  Let the air out and go for it. Don't wait until you are miles from no where to find out that your buddy doesn't know how to change one either.  There are videos. Also, there are articles with pictures.  Best choice is to have someone show you.  Go to a bike shop and ask them.  They will do it.  Encourage them to hold a class for beginner riders.  Ours does.  I even got the local university together with bike mechanics to offer classes on bike maintenance, repair and building.

- Have you tried glucosomine?  Great stuff.  I started several years ago.  It works to take away those joint pains.

non steriodal anti-inflamatory like advil, aleve.  anaprox (naporsyn) is a good one but is prescription strength.   they work great with ice and rest.

+1 on glucosamine.  I did some funky stuff to my knee in 2009 and started on it.  Make sure you "load up" the first two weeks.

Put down a 6 mile run today, finishing an hour before spin class.  Really feeling it, so it's going to be an early bed time for me.  I have to put in my long swim tomorrow before heading into the city for a meeting...

Yup, non refundable. Surprised

I actually thought about signing up for the lottery just for ships and giggles, but then thought OMG what if I got in??? so changed my mind haha

A guy in my tri club put in for it and was selected for last year - no sob story (that I know of) just lucky I guess.

I was SO tired when I came home this evening, I just wanted to go to bed. However, I had to go grocery shopping and while I did I convinced myself to go and run if only for half the scheduled workout (6o min). Once I got there I played a mental game and somehow hauled myself through the full hour. I'm very pleased I stuck it out.

I am going to have a 'body analysis' done tomorrow morning - kinda curious to see what they say Undecided. I also contacted a tri coach to set up a nutrition consult so she can help me dial in my nutrition.

Nice job on the Run - it always tough to gring it out but when you do it is amazing how it makes you feel. Body scan - interesting, good luck and booking a consult with a tri-coach is a great idea since I know you are having a tough time figuring out your nutritional stuff.

Take care.

Wow, everyone has been really busy.  I am still on my holding pattern because of my back.  No whining just facts.  It does feel better, but it is still bothering me some.  So this next week I am going to work on just core and a few light rides.  I think the combination will strengthen things up enough to get back into training.

I have heard mixed things about Glucosomine.  I was taking it in 2009 during my marathon training and then I actually had two doctors tell me it was a waste of time.  They said there is no real data or proof that it works.  But then I always here people swear by it.  Don't really know what to think.  I take my fish oil pills since I have heard the Omega 3 reduces swelling or inflamation.  But then again that could be just smoke and mirrors also.

I like a good placebo effect whenever I can get one. ;-)

My doc said that he has had many patients extoll the virtues of glucosamine, so I thought what the heck.  On the fish oil side, I take that due to its beneficial effects for the heart, etc.  Wasn't aware that it also was good for swelling and inflammation.

This week has been an utter and complete trainwreck.  The youngest of the three dogs had something going on and woke me up at 12:40am and 2:40am to go outside.  At 4:50am when my alarm went off, my body said "No way did you run six and then do spin class last night and now you're going to go swim."

So I was lazy and took the extra hour of sleep.  Lazy, lazy, lazy.

I hae some time to pack it in on Sunday, so I will double up.

Wish me luck folks - a potential job opportunity that I believe I mentioned might come to light today.  This would be awesome cuz then I could be a 3 minute walk from Lake Michigan, so I would store my wetsuit at work and throw down an OWS during lunch!

Government study didn't find any huge benefit in glucosamine.  But I know that my fingers were stiff and nearly unusable.  Now no problem at all.  That was before I lost the wweight and rode bikes, ran and swam so I have no idea how much benefit I'm getting.  I only know that I don't suffer much from joint pain at all and  I'm 59 and I workout like a beast in heat.

Functional Threshold = 295.  Whoot!  Nearly back to the 300 I had before the IT band issue.  It's not everything, but it is a victory.  With the added weight loss and strength, I hope this translates to better speed on the bike.

Noticed in my first two club runs that I'm feeling pushed.  I think 1. I asked to be in a faster group so I would be urged to go faster, and 2. I shortened my stride and increased cadence on the treadmill to abvoid injury.  I may be experiencing something from that.  Time will tell.    I'm no speed demon on the run, but a sub 9min/mi was where I was at last year and I'd like to get there again.

Court that stinks about your back, hope you heal quickly.  I would try yoga then core work.

KC,  I'm no Doc so I can just say what I do.  +3 on glucosomine and I also take prescription celebrex 2 times per day (24hr version of advil script only) you have to have liver test to get a scrip though.  I would see a Doc before trying anything new though.  Good luck

Rob great run with a spin class for a cooldown. lol

Deb way to fight through the urge to cut a workout short, that can be hard sometimes.  What exactly is a body analysis? Let us know what your nutritionist says.  My only advice with a nutritionist is to make sure they are used to working with clients that are doing abnormal workouts, alot of them only work with people that may do 30mins of cardio aday if their lucky.  Our requirements are double theirs.

I am with Tim as I take Fishoil and flax oil, no idea if it works but worth a try...  If not you have VERY expensive pee lol
