Alright, racing/training question. I need some advice.

Should I do another marathon in late November? It would give me 5 months to train for Boston. OR should I just keep volume up, doing smaller races like 5K, 10Ks and  half marathons along the way.

I said I never wanted to do Seattle again because of the crap weather and difficult course but, it would be interesting to see a years worth of improvement. Maybe that's not a good reason in this case. I don't know!

The one time I did Seattle, it was overcast and chilly -- about the best you could hope for.  I haven't wanted to roll the dice again.

Or to quote another friend of mine: "you PAID to run in Seattle in November?"

Sign up for Honolulu early December is my recommendation

I second Honolulu, though it can be hot as furk. But you'll be done by 8am.

Hi Spiglet. Feel free to come here anytime. Oh, and I have a question for you too ... do those flies in Busso actually bite, or just land on you and follow you and annoy you?

They don't bite

They do like to crawl in your eyes / ears / nose / mouth if you don't wave your hand in front of your face every 5 seconds.  Simplifies the nutrition plan.

Oh tonight ... dangit I should've ridden my bike to work then I could've just rolled over there.  You want to give me a ride?

As for Honolulu - I thought it was really cool although you better get in mosh pit mode if you want to PR because it is hard to get to the front with 25,000 people.  The race starts about 5am when it's all dark out.  They do a fireworks display before the starting gun goes off.  Then you run through town with all the houses decorated in xmas lights.  Then as the sun comes up you get out along the waterfront.  It's a beautiful race, and as speedy as you are it probably won't be TOO hot by the time you're done.

I have no grand plans for the weekend, although I have a swim date with a hot blond piglet tomorrow 8am. (BLECH TIME ... think about how yummy the piglet would have to be to balance that out, and he is)

My plans for the weekend are to hole up in the fort and defend it fiercely from all intrusions (noise and otherworldly ones included) so that I can make slurping sounds to every live-broadcast minute of the Tour de Piglets.

Ooooooh that sounds like a perfect weekend, well, minus the 8am swim. Are you swimming in the ocean or pool? Ocean makes 8am worthwhile, pool not so much.

Pool. It's been raining like the dickens here so I'm scared to go into the ocean because the rain act as a giant flush and the ocean becomes a septic tank for several days after.

He's the piglet on the right. He's gunning for a Kona spot next year and if he can get his swim around an hour, he's got the bike and run to do it, even in a wickedly competitive AG.

That is, of course, where I come in. I have sunk my teeth into his arm before, so I'm aiming for his calf next time. YUM!

So, you are going to kick his azz in the pool then?

Better go easy on him, if he is ever going to make it to Kona.

Also, dude, your sunglasses hahahaha

HIS sunglasses? Those are just his normal Transitions lenses which he wears almost all the time.

The first thing I'm gonna make him do is frickin' flip turns if he doesn't already. (I don't actually know).

The next thing I'm going to do is try to unfix him from TI. Don't get me wrong--there are a lot of merits to TI and their methods and materials, especially for people struggling to put a decent freestyle together. But Idiot Piglet was a 1:40/1:45 per 100m (open water) swimmer, has taken three TI seminars now and doesn't understand why he keeps getting SLOWER and can't seem to hold "form" past 3000m!

I'll eat something inedible (I don't own hats) if I'm wrong, but guaranteed he's focusing on all the less-necessary aspects of form, overdoing them (over-rotating, over-reaching, over-gliding) and is forgetting about the number one thing that's gonna make him FAST at this point ... the PULL! It's the PULL, stupid!

Well, I skimmed TI and pulled some useful things out. Very simple concepts really. Just the ones involving relaxing and looking at the bottom of the pool/body of water. DUH! It hadn't occurred to me. But I think that is just because I literally had no idea what I was doing. I grew up on a lake and swam all the time but it wasn't 'real' swimming.

I'd love getting my stroke butchered by you. I'm sure it's just laughable.

Also, I don't slip turn. I'm scared. Embarassed I have tried...but I end up doing this like...half twisting front flip and a nose full of water.

The TI coaches pull their hair out about people who just "pulled some useful things out" ... the whole basis of their system is (basically) to erase everything you're already doing and re-build your stroke from the most elementary aspects up.

However, I agree with you. There's good stuff there to be piecemealed out, and the whole system does help a lot of people.

If you can do a killer doggypaddle, you already have all the makings of the perfect stroke. It's just putting it together and yardage.

I'm told it's a most enjoyable process getting butchered by me. Really.

Indeed CA Int'l, and in Sac. Where is that family? Would they be able to get you to the start or where shuttle buses take you to the start? And home from the finish?

It is an outstanding, well-organized race. It's not the Most anything (Most scenic, Most people, Most whatever) but it's one of the best marathons to do because it ranks solidly in every category, without any downsides. It's a fast race because of the slight net downhill, but it's not flat.

A possible downside is that the weather could wind up being just like it is in Seattle. But while it might be chilly, it won't be as chilly as Seattle, and while it might rain, it's still much less chance of rain in Sac.

Oh, and Kate lives there. She'll take you to the zoo ... be careful, or you'll wind up an exhibit and might not be able to leave. But I'm sure you'll be cared for and fed very well.

She lives in Arden-Arcade near the American River. Whatever that means. I am too lazy to look up how close to the start/finish that is. But, it's something to keep in mind. Lynn has done that marathon a few times, right?

Ohhh yeah, the zoo!!!!!!

Really.

I keep thinking when I swim better I'll post a video for help... Kinda defeats the purpose, no? I guess I don't want anyone to see how pathetic i really am...

What does everyone have on their plate this weekend?

Tonight I'm going a local park where they are rebroadcasting TdF stage 17 and projecting it on a huge inflatable screen. Plus is has a beer garden. Now I'm just trying to find someone to go with me. All my friends say something along the lines of, "Bike racing ewwwwww"

Tomorrow I am going to the Cap hill block party, which is a music festival and then doing some other stuff around home. I was supposed to go camping with the fam but I just need some time to move at my own pace for a few days.

This weekend will be another trip to Orlando. Both of my daughters live there. The youngest was planning a wedding, but that has fallen apart. But it seems to have opened a few other doors that she wouldn't have knocked on in the past, so silver lining and all. And she is figuring out how strong she really is.

Hey, I need a favor. Would you please look at the last post in this thread and tell me if I'm going to roll my eyeballs? 'Cause I really don't want to waste an eyeball-roll.

It's an unfortunate truth but those adverse situations almost always seem to bring about the most positive and impactful changes. Of course, when you are in the situation you don't/can't hear that.

Well, it's safe warm protected-waters bay here in the Pod, so consider just posting a link here.

I'll post run vid if you post swim vid. Trust me, that far more than a fair trade.
