LazyMarathoner - 2008-10-23 10:47 PM Good evening everyone!

Kristin!

Beth!

how're you doing tonight?

I'm chilln'

having a vodka tonic and watching House

I had drinks and then dinner with my friend Sonia who I sadly haven't seen since my birthday in June! That's just ridiculous. It was wonderful to spend the evening with her and I learned so much more about her that makes me respect and appreciate her even more as a friend.

Did I mention there were two bottles of wine involved?

And who doesn't love House? That actor, Hugh whatever, is just brilliant. I love that show.

I like your style Beth, there is always a nice cocktail involved with your activities

How are you feeling Emily?

Not too bad.  Still a little stuffy and my throat is sore but I think I'll survive.

I've been drinking hot tea with honey to help with the sore throat so I'm jacked on caffiene.  This should help me get through the work night but I may not be able to sleep until next Friday.

sore throats are so annoying!

Did we all catch the same thing? I've been miserable. I had to do a 3-hour video-conference meeting today and I had to shout for the others to hear me, I totally lost my voice! My chest is heavy. I hate this feeling.

I know!

it sucks - good thing is, it only lasted about 5 days - I'm now starting to feel pretty normal

The worst kind of boss is the one that swings between 100% hands off and micro managing depending on what they are thinking about at any time...

oh, yes, I refer to that as the

swoop and poop management style

Lol - good description....

it is pretty funny! (and accurate - we've all been there)

It always seems to be the folks a few steps higher up the ladder that tend to manage this way.  They'll get all stressed out about something and then it just rolls downhill.  I'm near the bottom rung so I've experienced more than a few fallouts from frenzied management.

What is it that you do? I'm intrigued by the exams and lab time and what not. I'd love to know more!

OMG that description fits the MD at my last job 100% - I think it has a lot to do with how they progressed into management and if anyone taught them how to go about it...

Isn't it funny how ugly guys are strangely sexy with that accent? The aussie accent is very similar. I lose all sense of reason (probably boring to you...)

I've tried not to as well. I will say I've learned just as much from bad management in the sense that I learned how I never wanted to be, but I've been managing people for 6 years or so and I've always tried really hard not to micro-manage and not to allow the pressure on me to impact my team. It's not productive. As a freelancer, I miss managing people the most. I have close relationships with some women who were my freelancers who I managed for years. It's a great feeling to know you may have helped to shape someone professionally. It's one of the few things I found incredibly rewarding in my career.

I think a big part of it from someone a bit further down the chain... is

1) Knowing what your boss has on so that you are aware of any ongoing issues/politics etc that may be affecting them

2) Judging your questions and stuff based on that. If it is a BIG day in the office, say the launch of a major project, dont bother your boss with something trivial and non urget

I think the people you are managing have a role in the whole thing too... common sense and judging what has to be addressed NOW and what can wait until a regular catch up is SO important!

I wish I knew what an American accent sounded like. It would be so fun to be able to wipe your mind and experience something totally new. It's like living in NYC. I wish I could have one day where I had never been here and see it with those eyes. It would be nice to be able to have selective memory and comprehension!

You're not useless at all. I've been in NYC for 10.5 years and I'm still finding my way! It's amazing how difficult change can be. And after being with someone for 11 years I'm single for the first time so in many ways, I feel like I'm starting all over again. So I could use any and all advice any of you can share. I'm just glad I'm old enough and have figured out (somewhat) who I am by now. That might make it a little easier. Although I imagine I'll be on here complaining about the slim options in no time

It took me a long time to figure out how to "make friends" as an adult.  After graduating from college, I found myself still living in Lafayette while all my close friends moved elsewhere.  The Dude and I were already living together so I always had a built in buddy to hang out with.  And he had friends that were local so we had a pretty fun group to party with.  Then he left for Iraq.  I realized that I was severely lacking in the near-to-me friends department.  It's been a slow climb into new friendships.  I had to make the effort to ask folks to dinner, or over to the house for a drink.  Five years later, The Dude's preparing for a deployment to Afghanistan.  This time when he's gone, I'll actually have someone to call at nine at night when I get a wild hair and want to go get ice cream or a drink or whatever.  Or I can just come hang out on BT...

I was just reading an interesting tidbit on the science of taste and it actually answered the question of why chocolate and salt "go together".

It turns out that we experience the four classic senses - sweet, sour, salty, bitter - relative to each other.  In other words, if the food we eat has 6 molecules of sour for every molecule of sweet, we'll experience the food as six times more sour than sweet.  So adding a dash of salt to chocolate actually enhances the sweetness of the chocolate because we experience the sweetness of the chocolate relative to the small amount of saltiness.

So, Cat, next time you bake chocolate chip cookies, add a dash of salt into the dough.  It should enhance the sweetness of the cookie.

TOLD YOU PHIL!!!!!!!!!
