Is there any salt content to the water youre gonna be swimming in?  That will make you a lil more buoyant also.  My only reference for the wetsuit is pool or ocean but let me tell ya, you should float like a turd in the crapper w/ a suit on.  I literally just stopped and chilled for a few seconds in that race last weekend just to see how well the suit keeps you up.  You've got nothing to worry about.  You can LITERALLY just stop swimming, flop over on your back and chill till you feel like moving again.  Don't build this up in your mind like I did.  It's really no big deal

that makes me feel a little better, thanks! A lot of folks have been scaring the be-jesus out of me about the OWS.

No salt thought. It's a small lake. On the upside thought, it shouldn't be to choppy or have a very strong current.

A lake?  Speaking with ZERO experience in a lake, I would guess that other than some chop you will have a pretty easy swim!  Maybe Trina can give you some better insight since she did a lake swim (I think) for her last race.

lol...yeah, It's a midwest thing. Reguardless, I should have some more bouyancy with the wetsuit as opposed to the parachute I swim in at the pool all the time

I looked at the race website - it was thin on details but it did mention a rectangular, clockwise swim. I'm not sure if they will do wave starts or just one mass start. If I were you, I'd line up on the right side to take a straight line to the first bouy. If you start on the left side, it'll force you to swim really wide going into the first right turn and it's not worth the extra distance.

If you're worried about getting clobbered, wait a few seconds to let the fast fishies lead out, then get going at a comfortable pace with enough space to do your thing. Either way, I'd definitely avoid starting on the left!

You're going to do great!

Ran across this in another thread; a topic that is near and dear to my heart .  Probably along the same lines as the article Tim was searching for.  For guys like Brian and I who seem to always be on the prowl for upgrades, cost per second is an interesting way to see what you're getting.

... find your comfort zone in the water, focus on technique, and so what if this requires you to swim a little longer. The race is not won in the water!

Exactly... the Race is LOST in the water!  The best thing I have learned (in my short time TRI training) is stay within' yourself, technique is everything, and; during your swim, "Glide, Breath, Sight -then- Do it again" (Oh'... and pay no attention to what the other spastic yahoos are doing during tyhe swim... because it sucks).

Thanks for all the input on a Tri when I'm home in June.  I'm thinking the Silicon Valley Sprint but there were other options as well.  I'll be catching up on the forum tomorrow night.  Past few days have been crammed with college graduation, 1st grade open house, needy clients, and; Wifey's birthday.  Still doing the "Soldier Ride" tomorrow though.

Hey fellas,

Not been around much last few days...work!!!!

Racing again tomorrow...Half mary.

Did a cycling TT this week...it was a blast!

Once the Half mary is behind me, gonna concentrate on cycling & just maintaining my run, for the summer.

Richard

PS.  As an observation, you guys have become very knowledgeable!  I am quickly finding less & less to say!!!Cool

Exactly... the Race is LOST in the water!

Mark, if Brian was racing at an elite level, then I might agree with this statement. However, Brian hasn't swam in the open water for years. This is why I suggested finding a comfortable place even if it requires him to swim a little further. A few extra minutes in the water will not hurt in most XTERRA races and can easily be made up with some good transition times.

Spent the day riding with over thirty outstanding American Warriors on the final leg of the Southern California Soldier Ride.  Also saw some FDNY Brothers out there riding as well!  Total mileage for me in support of the Wounded Warrior project was 41.3… What a great day to be an American.  www.woundedwarriorproject.org

I know I promised to catch up tonight, but the family and I are heading back down to the Beach for the Wounded Warrior "Soldier Ride" Dinner.  I'll try again tomorrow.

Hope your all having a great weekend!

Same here Brian. I was out riding today and was thinkin' about your race. I was sending some good thoughts that you made it out of the water safely and were well on your way on the bike.

Sorry guys about being MIA but my medical issue is keeping me from much volume at all.  Our pool opened up today so I swam 4 laps 100 Yards  or so  I guess it was Pool is full size. I didnt have a problem doing 4 laps just stoped at end of each and turned around and went back down.  Then me and my son play water games. I did a 3 mile run on Treadmill.  Also talked to one of the Swim coaches and He can do a few lessons in a couple of weeks so I'll get he Swim going.   I'll check in and keep you posted. Looks Like all you guys are doing well and racing well too.  Good Luck..

Thanks for all the well wishes. I'm back and writing up a race report as we speak. It was a frign' blast!!! I had several friends do this race with me and we all had a lot of fun and placed well. I survived the swim, but I will say it was tough. I'll definitely have to work on that more and more experience in OW. I finally had a good ride on the bike this year!!! No crashes and I did well. I didn't get first place in my AG by far, but I did shatter every one of the goals I set for myself here last week. In that respect, I'm extremely happy with my race. I don't expect it to be easy to reach those top spots in my AG soon anyhow. From MTB racing I've found there to be an abundance of 30-40 year olds tearing it up in the midwest. None of my training friends are in this age group and they all joke around about how hard my AG is compared to theirs. Plus, this was Xterra's midwest cup. All the fastest AG'ers in the midwest were there fighting for a spot to go to the world championships in Kona. Considering all that I was very happy with a mid pack finish in my age group.

WOW Tim!!! Xterra's are sooooooo much fun! Myself and all my friends at the race were so pumped after. It was really cool.

Race report!!

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

Thanks again everyone for all the help here. As you could tell I was really nervous about this, especially the swim. You guys/girl really helped a lot.

followups from some of our conversations:
I did a little extra kicking coming out of the water. I'm probably not the best experiment but it didn't seem to help with the dizzines. However, my legs did feel better than usual on the bike after a swim.

I also cooled it down on the last mile of the bike and my legs felt nice and fresh at the beginning of the run. I did get cramps 3 miles in though. I'll need to do more bricks and figure this out. Not sure why I got them. I actually did longer bricks in training with no problems. I felt plenty hydrated too, but who knows. I'll have to work on this, because I could have broke the 2 hour mark easy without the 2 stops.

I did not attack the swim. I'm glad I didn't. OWS was harder than I thought even though I did make it through. I don't feel I'm that good in the pool, but OW kicked my . My plan of hanging back and going slow and smooth paid off. I beat the time goal I set for myself and feel good about it. Had I got into the ruckus up front I probably wouldn't have had as good of a time as I did. I'll work on this more before I go getting into the mad mix up front on the tri swims.

Congrats Brian!

Last week turned out to be a big bike week. I only did one 5 mile run and two solid swims - the rest was on the bike. Wednesday was a one hour spin, Saturday was a two hour spin, and Sunday was a 44 mile ride with some friends.

This week I'll give running a little more attention! I'm going to San Luis Obispo for memorial day weekend with the lady and not bringing the bike!

Tim - I'm stopping in Capitola on the way home Sunday for dinner at Shadowbrook!
