??I wanted to point out this race report to all of you guys.  I found it so inspirational. It's hard enough for me to drag my own butt around the race course, I can't imagine bringing another person along with me.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=262957&posts=31&start=1

That was an awesome race report...check out his website - he put together a movie of his first IM...very very cool

http://johnrnelson.net/triathlete.html

What I especially enjoyed was that he savored every minute he could before he crossed the line - including finding his wife for a kiss.....A lesson of living in the moment....I am so envious of that skill -- Living in the moment!!!

Margaret, gold star for you finding this!!!

Just checking to see if anyone is still alive and kicking over here?? I know it's hot as hades FOR REAL here in Texas. Training for me ceases from about 10 am - 7 pm. Although today, I don't think there will be any training this evening either. The freakin heat is WEARING ME OUT!!

It's so hot even the kids don't want to go outside. The pool is like a hot tub in the backyard..you can cook an egg on my driveway...Even the clover that was growing in my front yard has died...

Hilde, SOOO cute! I'll post a pic of my turtle jersey when it comes in... Meanwhile, how much do ya'll LOVE my (maybe) new shoes???

New Tri shoes from Asics- look closely, there's little bicycles & stuff on 'em! And they come with a spare set of speed laces. I got them from Zappos, so I'm wearing them around the house today to see if they work. I really, really hope they do!

Very cool!!!  I think I'm gunna get the bull dog one....I'm waiting on you and Tammy to mention the quality of the items - then if it's okay I'll pull the trigger.

Today I stopped by a new bike shop "Performance Bikes" (I think) and they had some bike jerseys on sale for $20 that were regularly $40 - cheapos no doubt, but dry wicking, zipper and some back pockets...don't know what else I'd need...So I bought 2...and they had biking shorts for 35 that were normally 55 - so I bought a pair of those too...I'll give the cheapies a shot....I just don't wanna do wash as often so the more the merrier!

Question!!!  I'm looking to buy a Camelbak backpack for some longer rides - 48oz just doesn't cut it...Also when I work up on the run distance I'd like to have some water there too.  So I've done some research and am heavily considering the Camelbak Octane XCT 100...I know we've tossed this around before, but I don't remember the outcome....What you guys think of this pack or the idea in general...I can't see carrying water nor a belt around my waist...I looked today at about 4 stores and could not find this model....ugh..So I will just order it if that's the way I go....Thoughts????

So, if you've read my blog recently you seen I recently had another bike fitting...the first one was three years ago.  It was a really cool experience with lots of computer aided measurements.  The system is

http://www.retul.com/

It took and calculated about 40 different measurements....All kinds of stuff I didn't even know about.  It took about three iterations of adjustments before we got my legs/seat adjusted to the optimum angles for power and comfort.  My baseline I had about 56cm of knee movement sideways (in and out from the top bar) when we got me all set-up with the proper angles that measurement was down to 42cm...that was much better and you could really see it on the graph...that extra movement does nothing but waste energy and possibly cause injury...My gut is responsible for some of the movement...boo hoo...I can fix that tho!  Then they set my riding position on the hoods and then on the drops...We didn't go crazy aggressive - but did set it up for more of a competition/racer positioning.  I think we dropped the handlebars a little over 3 inches...and the seat went up 3.5cm...sorry for all the different measurements..haha...(2.54cm = 1 in)  So my end position was a pretty flat back in the drop position...looking at it from my baseline...WOWZERS - it was huge!!!!  Even on the hoods, I'm probably better than I used to be on the drops....Haven't taken a long ride yet, so I'm sure Ill have some getting used to it....The 10 miles ride I took to shake it out was really good...maybe a little more hand pressure, but the stroke feels awesome.....I feel like I can pull up so much better...and the stroke down seems longer...which it is!!!  I'm pretty psyched to see what this all means over the next couple of months...Anyhow - this took 2 hours and cost me $225.... I think it will be well worth it...and compared to my last fitting this one was much better science and technology!!!  Anyhow, wanted to share that!

Tammy, I LOVE the shoes!!!  I have seen them before, actually on a MAN, ha ha!  And I've seen them down at my tri shop too... the Newton's are bright, but I like the multi colors...

Wilson, I don't know anything about Camelbaks.... I wear a fanny pack (*gasp*!), with an extra bottle of water in it for my long runs.  As much as I sweat, I don't think I'd like that thing covering my whole back... for biking when I know I'll need extra water I'll wear a bike jersey and stuff a couple of bottles in the back pockets to fill my aero bottle.  There were some bikers wearing them on the group ride I went on last week though...  and a bulldog jersey sounds PERFECT for you!!!  I'm having mine shipped priority mail, so I hope to see it by Wed/Thurs next week, hopefully enough time I can swim in it to see how it feels.  I don't believe the female jerseys come with a built in bra, so I"ll probably have to purchase one just for the tri suit....  Wilson, you may have to do that too... KIDDING, KIDDING!!!!!  Man, so sensitive!

FYI... Kati has not given up already on her tri journey... she had the surgery (and results were benign) and now is getting over a severe kidney infection... of course the doc wouldn't come right out and say it, but it's looking like it was caused by the catheter during surgery.  She's still taking antibiotics and waiting for her appetite to return.... today she goes in for a kidney ultrasound, but she is definitely on the mend and she is anxious to get back to training, but disappointed knowing she's probably starting from scratch again.  We're planning on an easy walk/run tomorrow morning, I'll get to push Kane in the stroller, FUN!!  I know she'd appreciate any inspires you might want to send her way...

GOOD LUCK RACERS THIS WEEKEND!!!!!!!  KICK SOME BOOTAY, DO THE MMMers PROUD!!!!

Wilson - I don't have any experience either with camel backs.  However, I couldn't imagine wanting my back covered either.  It just seems like it would be really, really hot.  I always run with a hand held water bottle.  If I'm on a long run, I also have a hydration belt that carries 1 bottle.  I have 2 water cages on my bike.  I have found places to refill them along most of my usual routes.

Tammy - Love the shoes!

Kati - Hope you get berrer soon.

Hilde - You can say fanny pack all you want!

I am going to be up north and off line from 8/7 through 8/13.  I know I'll be working out so don't worry about me going MIA.  I won't be able to respond to all of the race reports from this weekend.  I know you will all do great and make the MMM'ers proud!

Wilson - I ride with a camelback-type of pack.  It definitely helps me!  I know it's hot but what the heck, I'm sweating to death down here in Florida anyway!!  It has little pockets that I put nutrition in and my cell phone.  I started training with it after the tri I did in June where I was soooo sick afterwards.  I've gotten used to it but to be honest it is really nice NOT to have it on my shorter rides - my shoulders love it when I don't wear it.   On the positive side, using the pack makes drinking so much easier.  I don't have to reach down at all and it's right there so I'm more mindful of drinking.  Going up this really long hill on the TN tri, I was able to drink and never have to interrupt my concentration by reaching down and slowing me even more than my 5 mph - haha.  I did find this thing called a Speedfil which I'm considering if I ever go "long" like an HIM.  I've never run with the pack, but I did see someone at the TN tri running with one.  I run with a fuel belt.  I have two different types, one with 2 bottles for shorter runs and 1 with 4 bottles for longer runs.  I run in any tri with one or the other depending on the distance.  That way I can drink without having to worry about the race water stops.   Plus I have water to pour on myself if I'm too hot.  (I drink the electrolyte drink on the ride and one of my running bottles has a sports drink but the rest have water.

Peggy, you are the poster girl for hydration and nutrition - we're always worried about you in that area!!!  So you have tolerated having the pack on your back....maybe I wouldn't mind it too much..dunno..I have also looked at the Speedfil, but haven't pulled that trigger because it only works for the bike and not both the bike and run...I was trying to have dual purpose hydration..haha...but maybe that's not practical...dunno!

On a serious note for just a minute my friends....Two athletes died during the New York City Triathlon - during the swim portion. They did not drown but rather had heart related issues....

While team MMM was in Brady this past weekend, a woman was pulled from the water for what was overheard to be "severe muscle spasms"....

Let's make sure we are having our physicals, checking ourselves and checking each other to ensure we are 100% for a race. I don't want to be reading about any of us in the news!!

   Have a FABULOUS Tuesday!!

Train hard......but be smart about it.....

PS....Looks like October will be the month of foot surgery for me. Will know more when the doc calls me back today...

The ONLY cool thing about vomiting after every meal is that you begin to tone your mid-section with very little effort.  I would like to put my running shoes on sometime this week, maybe my bike shoes....maybe even my super-sexy one piece swim-suit.  Someone please ask my bathroom and more specifically my toilet if I can please have permission to be away from it long enough to relieve some much needed stress via a workout this week?  Pretty please? My esophagus is starting to feel like a Rain Stick....
