Working pediatric urgent care does that to a nurse. I'm totally ok with it, it beats giving chemo injections any day. Chemo is tough. Its really hard to work on a cancer or a burn ward for any length of time, I would imagine. Its got to suck the compassion and empathy out of you after a while. The hardest part was that it was pediatric, and I was there for 3 years. Bone marrow transplant, liver transplant, lupus, different anemias, and LOTS and LOTS of chemo. Very sick kids, not-so-fun treatments, some of which were intramuscular injections. Poor kids. Compassion has never been a problem for me--keeping my emotions in check and refraining from reading the obits to this day--well, still working on the latter. I've been out of the hem/oncology ward for 4 and a half years now, too. On the bright side, when I had to work my holiday shifts it was kinda uplifting. It was really nice to see families being grateful for what they had, not p.o.'ed because they're stuck in the hospital during the holidays. Adults and ped med/surg was like the latter. The families on hem/onc would just bring their celebrations to the hospital. It was actually a happy place to be around Christmas. wow, that would have been a tough but rewarding experience It totally was. I'm glad I did it, but I don't know if I'll ever go back. Pediatric cancer will always be near and dear to my heart, though. |
