Brian are your glasses still fogged from the race? That's a triple post!

Hey, great job! I'm looking forward to the race report.

hahahahaha LOL....no. I had to shrink that image a couple times to get it to fit. The page expired while I was doing it. Must have posted my text while went back to shrink the file.

WOW Tim!!! Xterra's are sooooooo much fun! Myself and all my friends at the race were so pumped after. It was really cool.

Yes they are! I how found that the vibe is much friendlier than at traditional triathlons. Plus, I find it much more enjoyable to ride and run on the trails.

Are you going to do XTERRA Torn Shirt in MI?

Congrats Brian!

Last week turned out to be a big bike week. I only did one 5 mile run and two solid swims - the rest was on the bike. Wednesday was a one hour spin, Saturday was a two hour spin, and Sunday was a 44 mile ride with some friends.

This week I'll give running a little more attention! I'm going to San Luis Obispo for memorial day weekend with the lady and not bringing the bike!

Tim - I'm stopping in Capitola on the way home Sunday for dinner at Shadowbrook!

Nice.... Enjoy the weekend.

I'm off on Sunday. From the restuarant, you should be able to see the back of my firehouse.

I also cooled it down on the last mile of the bike and my legs felt nice and fresh at the beginning of the run. I did get cramps 3 miles in though. I'll need to do more bricks and figure this out. Not sure why I got them. I actually did longer bricks in training with no problems. I felt plenty hydrated too, but who knows. I'll have to work on this, because I could have broke the 2 hour mark easy without the 2 stops.

This is usually always a problem for me too. Coming of the TT bike to street running, no problem. But, going from the MTB to trail running, I get cramping in my gluts and lower back. I normally just have to work through it. Granted, I don't do a lot of these types of bricks because I believe the risk-to-benefit is too great. However, I think there is more to it. I think a mjority of the issue comes from different positioning and muscle group engagement while on the MTB.

So my wife just texted (is there no better word?) me a picture of 3 packages sitting outside my front door and said "and there are 3 more shoved in the mailbox!".  I love picking up new hobbies and all the 'gear' for it :D.  Damn you triathlon, damn you!

The key is to buy her something and make sure it arrives before your swag shows up at the door. It goes over a lot better that way. Not that I have any experience with this!

Subject: Milestone....
Managed to swim 200m with out stopping this PM.  For most of you, that's no big deal.  For me it's huge as I could not do 25m 2 months back!  Almost to the point where I feel that I can go "non-stop" -- albeit at a VERY slow speed.  Starting on 8 June have weekly lessons.  Optimistic that major progress is just around the corner.

The HRM has been huge in my training.  While I can't wear it in the pool, it's made me much more aware of how my HR "feels".  Have been able to use this to dial things back; and, accordingly, go longer distances without getting tired.  On the 200m could feel the rate start up and used this signal to really relax and take it slow and easy.

Followed swim up with a ride on the stationary bike.  Only thing missing was the post work out trip to the sushi bar for a treat!

Don't downplay your accomplishments!  That's big.  I remember when I first got in the pool.  It was a heavy dose of humility.  I grew up around the water surfing, waterskiing, and wakeboarding, so I figured this was going to be no big deal.  Oh, how wrong I was!  I could swim 25 yards and would have to stop at the wall.  So, I know how good that feels when you are able to swim your first 50, 100, 200, etc.  Congratulations!

Also, the more you train with the HR monitor, you will get a good feel for which heart rate zone based on your associated effort of breathing.

I forgot the wristband for mine today and I felt kinda lost w/o it on my run.  I haven't run w/o it in a looooong time.  Congrats on the swim milestone as well!  1/4 mile is just around the corner

Since I have a pretty big break in my XTERRA races, I was contemplating doing an Olympic distance road tri next weekend.  So, I was looking at the swim splits for last year's race.  I'm having trouble believing that the distance was correct for the swim.  The top thirty competitiors' swim splits were between 1:06 and 1:23/100.  Even back of the packers in the age groups were averaging near, if not less, than 2:00/100.  I just haven't experienced a race with such fast swim times!

So, my question out of curiousity is: do you think the course was shorter than 1.5K or are these guys and gals really that fast?

I wonder this as well. Here's my theory:

1. I think part of the distance may sometimes include the exit/entry and beach run for a 2 lap tri.
2. If it's a smooth day on the water IMO you swim faster than you would in a pool for 100m's because you don't have to stop, turn, and regain momentum.

I think you, Tim, may be used to losing time with surf and current in the ocean.

I agree that over distance I swim faster in the open water than in the pool.  For two reasons, one is no flip turns and two, the wetsuit provides bouyancy and less drag.

In XTERRAs, the beach run is included in your swim, but not the swim distance.  As a result, this should make your split even slower.

I know there are elite swimmers that can split a distance swim at 1 minute per hundred, but this just seems exorbinantly abundandant to me.  I guess I'll find out after the race.  If I split under 1:30/100, then I know something is off as I tend to split between 1:30-1:40/100 in the open water.

Yep.  Convinced 2 couples that we hang out w/ to run a local 10k w/ the wife and I on Sunday.  Then we're gonna hang out at the pool for the afternoon and get even further dehydrated before grilling dead animals and getting completely chef-ace and trying to get all the wives naked

I dunno. Those were my guesses.

I gotta share this about the Xterra 2 lap swim. When I got to the beach and stared out at those bouys I freaked out!! I thought they were soooooooooo far out. I guess I didn't equate my laps in the pool to a straight shot very well. Anyway, they start going over race details and metion it was 2 laps!!! I was like....what!!!! I had to convince myself this was better for me, since it breaks up my swim well. Like we said in previous conversation I always swim better in the second 400 than I do the first and I can break it up. I kept having to convince myself it was good I've done this in the pool a 1000 times. The 2 laps really worked out well for me.
