Wilson posted this on another OLD MMM thread, I guess he missed the recent one, so I've moved it over.  I was freaking out since the post before his was from January!  I thought the mods had deleted 8 months worth of our glorious banter...

-----

I've been thinking about extending my Tri season since this summer didn't go very well for me....I'm so fortunate to have found a perfect Tri for me...I've registered and will begin training tomorrow.  Here is a picture from last year!!!!  It's in December, but who cares I can swim in slush for competition like this!!!

WHatever you need for motivation Wilson!  Doesn't look too cold there, if you know what I mean!

My new tri suit arrived yesterday!!  Colors are perfect to match my bike... only complaint is that the top is kind of short.  Not enough to show my flabby belly, but I know I'll be showing some back skin when I'm on my bike.  Oh well... I've got this freakishly long torso, always a problem.  Maybe I should have ordered a men's top?  In any case, going out to the lake today for a quickie swim to see how it feels.  Unless it RAINS or THUNDERS... yep, there are thunderstorms on the radar, just not exactly where we are, but there's always a chance, right?  It's overcast but still hot and humid, ugh.

Kati is still having medical issues, but hopefully things will be getting better soon!  She's lost a ton of weight and is looking good, but I would not recommend throwing up for 3 weeks as a weight loss method...  I keep discouraging her from working out even though she wants to... not having any fuel does NOT make for a good workout.  She has another follow up on Tuesday, so hopefully the doc can get things back on track.  She had the day from hell yesterday at the clinic, but I'll let her share that with you all if she wants to!

Hilde, I just got back from riding in my new jersey, and I love it! I got the jersey, not the tri top, and I decided to go with a men's size for the extra length. The cycle jersey runs a little big, so you would take an XS if they have it.

I'll post about my amazing ride here, because I've been talking to a couple of you about electrolytes. I decided to get serious about electrolytes after realizing that some of my heat symptoms (nausea, dizziness, headache) were the same as hyponatremia. Apparently- and I didn't realize this because I live in a climate where sweat actually evaporates BEFORE it leaves your skin- APPARENTLY, I sweat like a wh0re in church. I was wondering why all the neighborhood dogs want to lick me when I get back from a ride. I'm not fond of flavored drinks, so I got some Hammer Endurolytes tabs and some Saltstick caps. I think I was using the Saltstick today- one every 20 minutes or so, about 2000 mg of sodium (plus other stuff) over 3 hours, and I feel frickin' awesome- not depleted AT ALL. Normally I'd be flat on my back on the floor by now, trying to muster up enough energy to take a shower. Good thing you can't smell me. Anyway, Hilde, Peggy, and anyone else who's felt like crap after a hot workout, you need to try this stuff! Or at least put a little extra salt in your Gatorade!

Oooh, thanks for the expertise on the electrolytes and the salt tabs.  I may head over to the LBS and see if they have any, of course then that would be breaking the rule of "nothing new on race day"... hmmm.  I'm expecting this tri to be under an hour, so probably won't try it tomorrow.  I WISH I didn't know I was sweating!

Yes, I'm thinking I may go ahead and order a men's tri top, hoping it will be longer, that's the only thing I really don't like, it was very comfy in the water.  The tri shorts have the plastic gripper strip on the legs, and I'm not fond of that either, but I think in a race I won't even notice.

I'm gunna give the salt tabs a try too....my next long ride - if I get my knee to cooperate...I've always wondered about their application in my training...But I guess now that I bike longer they may be a plus??  I use Nuun too....so we'll see - can't hurt to try!  Thanks for the education Tammy!

back from 2 weeks of camping in the sun, fighting in the heat and walking untold miles every day.  I had an absolute blast.  Didn't get any running in first week, but I got a good bit of fencing in the second week.  Dug and shoveled sumps all first week, and tweaked my left elbow, so I was somewhat handicapped in my fighting, but fought through it.

Monday I'll be back at it.  I registered for a Century bike ride in September, though they have multiple mileage, and I'm doing 30.  It's supposed to be full of 'rolling hills', so I need to start hitting more hills than I get on my rail trail ride.

Yay!  I'm home!

Thanks Tammy for the heads up about the salt tabs.  I'm like Hilde - I think I'll head over to the LBS and find some.  Except I'm too freaking lazy today to do anything -- maybe later this week.

I think the City Athletic Director (Tracy) likes me because I come to most of her races and she works with Ron, she's put my pic up on the website before too... in fact the pic on my blog is also from Hot 2 Trot a couple of years ago!  I'm also friends with the race photographer's Mom, so he's featured me as one of 3 racers for his Facebook photography page... must be the cow, ha ha!

Attempted my first ever lake swim this weekend.  I'm not really sure how I feel about swimming in 90 degree lake water that's 12 feet down from the norm, and with inbred fishies nipping at my legs and A$$ while I swim....BUT, it was definitely an eye-opener.  The wake from boats and currents in themselved make breathing a bit more difficult than in the pool.  Oh, and the water stinks too.

Congrats to the Hildebeast for sending all the other ladies at Temple Tri home with consolation prizes and tears on their face.  That's just how she is, no hard feelings!

Thoughts are best wishes to my Indy boys and anyone involved in the State Fair tragedy.  That's just aweful, and hopefully we didn't lose any family members or loved ones!

Hope everyone is having great progress!!!! I, on the other hand am still extra lame and awaiting more medical attention and advice.  Hopefully I'll have an update tomorrow and will know a little bit more about my condition.

Thanks Kati - no one I knew was involved in the state fair tragedy....It's just horrible that an evening of fun turns into an evening where 5 lives are lost and 40 some injured and many still in the hospital...Mother nature is unpredictable and sometimes we forget we aren't in control of everything!!!

I hope they have better news for your health issues!!!!  I understand how frustrating it is not just with the triathlon stuff but how it interacts with your normal everyday life!!  Fingers crossed over here for you as I'm sure is true of the whole MMM gang!

Kati, the OWS is a difficult thing for many to overcome...I think that's probably why there aren't as many triathletes in the world.  To substantiate some of that I thought this article was good -

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/15/sports/rise-in-first-time-triathletes-raises-safety-concern.html

I'm one of the weird ones...The OWS doesn't bother me a bit - I actually like it better than the pool.  I just wish I were faster, but there is something exciting and electric swimming with hundreds of people - maybe I'm just weird!!!  The last Tri I kept running into the same guy...not sure who was running into who, but for about 200 yds or so we were best friends..hahah...In my last Tri evidently there was a guy who freaked out 50 yards into the swim and was screaming for help...that is scary!  How do you help I guy like that...he may drown you in panic!!!!

Thanks Wilson! I'm definitely getting frustrated...I've got an appointment this morning, and hopefully I'll get SOME kind of relief.  I don't even care if it means surgery at this point.  I just want to be healthy again!!!!!!!!!!!! The open water swim was definitely different.  I can tell it will take a bunch of practice. Props to you for doing so well with it!

Well, let me add some fun content to the forum...well maybe not so fun!  I stretched the ITB really well today before taking off for a bike ride - normal routine of prepping the bike for a ride...air, make sure trims don't hit break pads, check for stuff in the tire and general over look...that's pretty much my standard.  I got about 1 mile from the house going down a hill and getting ready to make a right hand turn...I know down the hill I was going about 27mph and I usually try and take this turn around 20mph or so.....So, I went to take the turn and the front end of the bike washed out and I was splayed to the ground like a rag doll....This was not fun...not fun at all.  It was like in slow motion - I thought...don't put your arms out, hit your shoulder...that worked okay....but, I hit my head really hard against the road....I remember when I hit thinking that the helmet did a really good job of absorbing that impact and I must have trashed the helmet...I got up and was really dizzy and having a hard time walking to the side of the road.....I thought I was gunna throw up...I've felt this way before in other non-biking accidents and I pretty much knew what was happening.....So I put my hands on my knees and just collected myself for a couple minutes then retreived my bike.....I wondered how the F*CK did that happen....I just washed out...no signs of trouble...I looked at the corner figuring I'd see gravel...nope, no gravel....okay, I hit an oil spot...nope no oil....now I was really confused and doubting myself and my reaction time/cornering ability....I used to ride motorcycles and slide the rear end out during cornering...so this isn't new to me....Anyhow I finally looked at my tire and noticed it was completely flat!!!!  I lost air in the tire on the fast downhill and didn't realize it till I took the corner, the tire buckled and I lost traction and away goes the front end.....boom down goes Wilson.  This really pisses me off...So I started to change the tube, noticed glass in my tire - it cut it a bit - hence the flat....and then I aired up the new tube and a big bubble appeared and the tire popped out of the rim....when I rolled the tire in the corner I cut it and stretched it out so the bead wouldn't say in the rim....So, I called the wife again....twice this week..haha....to come get me...this time with a story that I've crashed....hmmmm...

So aftermath....bick is missing a few pieces on the shifter/break levers, rim is scuffed up, tire is toast.  It still shifts and brakes fine, so I think it's just cosmetic...road warrior bike now....Me on the other hand.....nice goose egg and cut on my right shin, right shoulder is bruised and scrapped up a little, right elbow is all road rashed...and the worst is my hip really took a beating....I ripped my brand new bike jersey..first time wearing it...and ripped my pearl izumi bike shorts...that sux.  My helmet is done - some small dents on the outside and some crushed foam to some degree...I thought the helmet would have looked a lot worse...damn I hit hard....That helmet kicked a$$!!!!!!  So, I'm a tad sore now...shoulder, elbow and hip are throbbing pretty good....but It'll heal and I'll be jamming the corners very soon......Now let's see how much all the bike stuff is gunna add up to....New helmet, tires, maybe rim, bike shorts and jersey and oh yeah...a NEW SET OF FU$#@%CKING TRAINING WHEELS!!!

Enjoy my pictures to document my fun!!!!

Wilson, looks like you did really did a number on your bike and your skin.  Good thing for your helmet.  Looks like it did the job.  Helmets are cheap, heads are expensive!  Take some time to heal from this on.  Glad you can joke about it, looks pretty painful.

You don't have to crash your bike to post pics of your @$$ Wilson, really, you can do that anytime... WTF on crashing the bike??  You are damned lucky you didn't break a collarbone like Joe did earlier in the season.  Guess you'll be missing some pool time till that road rash heals, and I'm guessing you are quite a bit more sore TODAY than last nite.  Good thing you have a wifie at home, willing and able to come pick you up when you have a FAIL...  Time to do some more shopping, you should get some BLUE tires, matching tires to your bike is the latest thing, y'know.

Seriously, I'm glad it wasn't so much worse, you n' the bike a little bit worse for wear, but you'll both make a come back.  For sure get a new helmet, that too, should match your bike.  And if you're gonna crash again, dang it man, try and get in a little more distance first, a measly mile, WTH???  Take it easy for a couple of days, you're no spring chicken anymore, it'll take a little longer to bounce back than when you were 21!

I guess you can use this to your advantage, Cheryl should be REAL nice to you, ha ha!!  Play it up!!

Hey gang, let me bring you up to date on Kati... she has really had it bad the past month!!  She had the surgical boobie biopsy done on Aug. 15th and everything came back clear on that.  2 weeks later she was diagnosed with a severe kidney infection, probably caused by the catheter from the surgery.  At that point the vomiting began and she literally hasn't kept any food down since then, but has been able to keep fluids down.  She's lost over 20 pounds!  She had a kidney ultrasound done, good news was the kidneys were healing, bad news, large cyst (6+ cm) on her ovary.  Had more tests done, and finally yesterday she went in for a follow up with her original clinic doc who couldn't believe she was still feeling so awful.  Sent her to OB-GYN for a consult and they agreed the cyst should come out, so we are heading in for the surgery in about an hour.  Hopefully it will be done laparoscopically and they won't have to take the ovary, but there's a chance they might have to if it's wrapped around it or something.

In the middle of all this I got approved to be tested for the BRCA 1 and 2 genes (breast cancer gene) and did that last week.  I will find out in 2-3 weeks the results of that.  If I come back positive, they will test Kati and if SHE comes back positive, then there will some hard decisions to make.  Cancer sucks.

I've gotten to spend a lot of time with Kane... in fact he tells me all the time, "Grandma, you're my best friend!"  ha ha!!

I'm sure Kati would appreciate any inspires you send, she's pretty discouraged with all this crap.  How bad is it to eat and choose your food by what will be easiest to come back up?  She has not given up her tri training dreams, now just has to wait for yet another all clear before she can start over.  I'm hoping to talk her into a Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving, and MAYBE a duathlon on Oct 23rd if she can get back at it in time (2mile-9mile-2mile).

2011 has NOT been a good year for MMMers!!!  2012 has just GOTTA rock for us!!!  Love you all!

2011 has NOT been a good year for MMMers!!!  2012 has just GOTTA rock for us!!!  Love you all!

Good grief - what is going on around here?  I go off to do some soul searching, wallow in a just a tad of self pity and try to prepare our apartment for a new baby and all hell breaks loose!

First off - Grandma, you're every single MMM'ers best friend so feel sooper dooper special!

What a story though!  I'm not one that often believes in fate but who would have thought a kidney infection would lead to an ovarian cyst diagnosis?  I guess sometimes things do happen for a reason...

As some of you know, my wife did the whole ovarian cyst surgery thing in the fall.  Hers was 10cm and was barely on the cusp of being able to do it laparoscopically.  Even though the ovary completely surrounded the cyst, they were able to remove it and the beautiful thing about ovarian tissue is that you can cut it, shred it, etc and the ovary will actually reform.  The recovery is not great (oh, the gas pains she had!), particularly because you can't exactly do anything to actively recover, like you would a knee or a limb.  As such, I would aim for the Turkey Trot 5k over the Duathlon.  For the first few weeks, her butt will want to do nothing but sit still, for the most part (and maybe eat now that her infection is clearing up).

On the bright side, my wife's incision points were mostly small (the one they hauled it out of had to be opened further) and have healed up very nicely so Keeks will be easily rocking her bikini and thong by next summer.

I wish her, and you, all my best and will be sending good vibes your way as I think of you.

Oh - and one last thing.  If she asks, DO NOT let her go on a tandem bike ride with Wilson!!
