Expert 1255![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | Subject: Running Socks QuestionMy running socks or shoes are giving me blisters on the insides of the arches. I have 3 pair of shoes which I alternate. I used to run in cotton socks and NEVER had a problem. Now I have these thin fancy "running" socks, merino wool, asics, etc. My feet get hot spots, I get blisters, etc. I don't use extra insoles and have not really had a problem. My shoes all have less than 300 miles on them. I have tried using vaseline. Thinking of trying the toe socks and maybe going back to my cotton socks. Any other recommendations?

Subject: RE: Running Socks Questioni love my Zoot shoes that i can wear without socks and now i wear bike shoes without socks. if i do start to get blister, i will wear corn pads or mole skin adhesive. if it is cold, i have shoe cover for bike shoes. after a year of not wearing socks, i would have a hard time going back to socks. it is great to not have to worry about socks when you are racing. |

Master 3022![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (third season) - CLOSEDQuestion for the group: I'm doing a winter cycling plan that has periodic testing to capture gains in power and to match training to current fitness levels. Tomorrow is a the second test (1st test was 4 weeks ago to set a baseline). My legs are still fatigued from the weekend's training and skating today didn't help. Also, feel like I'm fighting a bit of a cold. I'm thinking of pushing the test forward one week and modifying this weeks training to recover a bit for a couple days and then add back some intensity prior to testing next Tuesday. Alternatively, I could go ahead with the test and see where I am. I'm guessing the smart thing is to push the test forward a week and let my body recover? Just want some positive affirmation or someone to say HTFU. |

Mitch: I'm usually a HTFU proponent, but with a long bike Saturday and a 16 mile run on Sunday, I see little opportunity for gain by doing another test in your current state. If you do the test and get lackluster results, then what? You will blame it on being tired. If the test goes well, then you have a good result, but you run the risk of further illness. It may turn out that the cold is just a passing thing, at which point do the test later. Seems like a risk a reward analysis. Be smart and trust your body. Edited by JoePetto 2012-01-16 5:38 PM |

We were wondering what you and/or everyone on here uses? That might be our next bike investment. After a wetsuit my next major investment will be a power meter. Right now I have a Kurt Kinetic trainer that has a defined power curve and train by power indoors. Once my new watch arrives I will be able to use Sport Tracks and a plug-in to do in depth power analysis of rides. Might eventually get a new trainer with more functionality. But, would love a power meter for outdoor rides and races, especially if I ramp up into HIMs and IMs. |

We were wondering what you and/or everyone on here uses? That might be our next bike investment. As much time as you and Scott spend riding indoors, I'd say a Computrainer would be the most incredible piece of equipment for you. You'll get power metering, computer hookup, fun videos that actually interact with you and increase/decrease resistance according to the route, measurable progress and the biggest of all, it is easier to put a long ride on the Computrainer than on a fluid based trainer or magnetic type. For the amount of years that you'll use it, the fact that there's two of you in the same household using it and all, I say that's a no brainer. Big investment but worth it! Just my two cents... And you went progressively faster which is great. I feel a new personal best is coming your way!Started Ernesto's taper week today. Track session. 6x200m reps with 200m recovery. The temperature has dropped a lot over the last few days and there's frost everywhere. One side of the track was covered in thick frost, but fortunately the bit I needed for the fast sections was clear. Ernesto - will it be okay if I do the interval set on Thursday on the treadmill? It's going to be a bit tricky getting to the track, but there's a treadmill at work that I can use after I've finished. |

We just purchased 2 Cyclops Fluid Pro trainers in October. We (esp me) never thought about a power meter. BUT... Even Scott mentioned learning so much through this forum. Once we see how I do at the HIM we will see what lies ahead. On another note for training, I believe Scott sent a like to the route we will be riding once outdoors. I know you encourage groups but for us both training that is tough (but we are looking into it). Our route on base is 13miles with a steady climb for about 7 miles from about 6300ft to 7500+ft. Also, met with a swim coach and although my pool is closed I had an AH-HA moment as she explained the pull mechanics.... Looking forward to getting in the pool Monday! |

Good luck with the power meter research Jen, it is a maddening process. PowerTap is updating their entire line of of meters so you can find some decent deals out there. A wired Powertap runs around $800 ($600 for the hub on amazon) and the mid-level wireless hub (SL) and computer was running around $1200 - $1300. Jorge was running a group buy late in the fall, but it was not in my budget (went cheap with virtual power from trainerroad.com - $7/mos and a $20 ANT+ stick).
