Veteran 439 Denver area | Subject: RE: Ironman Texas I won't turn down free homebrew and neithe will my spectator husband. He and I recently had this discussion: Will: hey, Southern Star brewery is right by the bike course. I'm going to hang out there while you're out on the bike, mkay? Me: that's fine, as long as you find me on the bike course twice Will: ok, no problem. 1 PM beer tour it is! Me: clarification... 2x on the bike course does NOT mean start and finish. That's in addition to the start and finish. Will: hmmmmm So having good beer at the finish (because he's going to be there a loooong time waiting for slow little me) will be a great thing. |

Southern Star is *awesome*. Free "tour" - not so much of a tour as it is a nice (unairconditioned) place to hang out and FREE drink beer. The also have the Outlaw Cookers there, providing tasty burgers and brats for cheap. Its not that far away from the bike course either, so it would be pretty easy to zip over for a few hours. |

Pro 4174 Keller, Texas | Subject: RE: Ironman Texas Is anyone training with Ironman Perform? I have been using it lately and while I like the taste I think it may be causing some GI issues for me. I am not 100% convinced that it is the perform but there seems to be a connection between my "symptoms" and when I drink it. Sorry if this is TMI bit I feel bloated and gassy. Could it be simply the increase in training volume? It would be a major PIA not to be able to drink what they serve on the course, but not a catastrophe as I could supplement with more salt tabs and nutrition but it sure does make it easier to buy what the are selling. Anyone else with issues with the Perform? |

Veteran 439 Denver area | Subject: RE: Ironman Texas I'm sticking with Infinit, although I've tweaked my mix a bit. A bit risky with LoneStar 2 weeks away, but oh well. It is a bit of a pain to have to carry all your nutrition around, but its not super awful. Just takes planning. For IMTX, I'm planning on having my aero and speedfill bottles (3 hrs) at regular strength Infinit, then concentrating 4 hrs into one bottle and mixing in fresh water at each aid station. Sure, it makes my bike heavy but at least I know I have stuff that works for me. |

Typically, I'm understanding and will go with the flow. I'm sorry, but this is not one of those times. I'm thankful for the fact that we at least have hotel rooms and am not posting this to get flamed or even stir up a debate. I'm frustrated and will leave it at that and wanted anyone else that reserved rooms at this hotel to be aware of the situation. Back to training talk, right Marcy? What ever came of this? |

Expert 1083 The Woodlands, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Texas Last night the Ironman course was windy (surprise!) and full of dead skunks. At least 3 of them on the <20 miles of it I rode (Fish Creek/2854). Going straight on 2854 winds came at me in all directions, at the same effort level I'd be going anywhere from 12mph to 28mph. Fun stuff! On the nutrition question I'm carrying all my own stuff. Have 2 bottles each with 3 hours worth of my nutrition mix on the back. Aerobottle up front and speedplay bottle on the frame both full of water. Will refill the water at aide stations along the way. The bike's heavy but my tummy should be happy. |

I was thinking of trying this or just having a bottle behind me with a second 3 hr serving wating for water in the middle of the race. I have done 4.5hour concentrate with no problem so far and I will try a 5 hour concentrate tomorrow. I just want to ride during the race and not worry about other things |

At least that only becomes a concern on the run course. By that point, there are usually plenty of other calorie options at most of the aid stations (gels, cookies, pretzels, etc). As for my nutrition, KISS. Single bottle cage horizontal between the aerobars, picking up a bottle of Perform at each aid station. The last 20 miles of the bike, I'll switch to the four 100-calorie Krusteaz no-fat brownies (primary ingredients: sugar, flour, fructose, cocoa) I'll have in my back pocket and start getting water at the aid stations. I'm planning on the switch to the brownies because usually 4+ hours of any sports drink is about all I can handle. This will give me something solid to chew on and let me wash the Perform film out of my mouth for a while. Besides, I love me some brownies. Now, time to stop talking for a bit and do some hill repeats on the bike! Edited by dgunthert 2011-03-25 11:46 AM |

Will6899 actually suggested using those little Colgate one-use ones - I think they are called whisps? I think I am going to throw one of those in my T2 bag and possibly one in my pocket for the run. Pro 4174 Keller, Texas | Subject: RE: Ironman Texas I have been thinking about the situations I have been using Perform, and may have figured out what the issue is. I need to start looking at the Perform as nutrition and not as solo hydration. When I have been having the GI issues, the Perform was my only liquid (using it on shorter rides and runs). On my long rides where I mostly use water and supplement with the Perform I seem to be OK. So maybe the issues are self-inflicted. BTW - I do like the taste of the drink so hope this is indeed the issue and I can continue to use it. |

Extreme Veteran 567 Kingwood, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Texas Trying to keep nutrition as simple as possible:
This leaves me with a few hundred extra calories if it is smoking hot or I start to feel like crap and keeps the bike from feeling to loaded down. IMO, this is what makes Infinit the best choice for long distance courses. The run course plan is to have another flask of Liquid Shots at T2 and another at run special needs. Hydration will be taken off the course - more Perform and water. After typing all that it looks difficult? Seemed much easier in my head *** all subject to change a gazillion times before May 21st ***

Regular 240 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Texas For those that have hit the coarse, how is the road debris? Regular Contis 4000 or Gatorskins? Also, since the wind has been wicked for the past 4 weeks, did you all ride with any deep rim wheels or disc. I am riding tomorrow and just want some advice since this will be my first time riding out there. I am planning to race in 82mm deep wheels, so I would like to test ride the coarse with them, but I dont want to force to much control over the bike due to the winds. I think the wind is less aggressive in May, at least here in Cypress. |

Veteran 147 TEXAS | Subject: RE: Ironman Texas This is just my 2cents on Nutrition for the Bike Special needs bag. I am not an expert by any means. I have done IM AZ twice in April 08 and November 10. Also have run a few Ultras including Rim to Rim /Grand Canyon. So I feel I have a little experience at what works for me on longer events Plan on putting a variety of food and tastes in the Special Needs . You will be amazed at what will look good to you in Montgomery County on May 21. As many have listed their caloric needs and well planned out strategies, think about the reality of drinking anything for 9-10 hours. I promise you will be a little tired of it once you and the nutrition liquid gets warm. In the past I have put some Granola bars, Snickers (which promptly liquefied in the Arizona heat), Peanut Butter Crackers (salt, fat, and crunch) and single serving Fruit Cocktail (sugar, liquid and chewy) in Special Needs. An array of taste and textures is not all bad. Again just my 2 cents and suggestion. Good Training everyone |

I think the wind is less aggressive in May, at least here in Cypress. At Ironstar last year I went with an 808 wheelset, it was windy for this race and I was fine. FWIW, I weight about 150lbs so you should be good with the deep rims. Just anytime you make a left be aware you might get hit with a crosswind! I got a set of 45mm carbon wheels that I am going to use for IM but that is only b/c I no longer have the 808's. Also, the road conditions are are great in Montgomery County and decent (chip seal) in Grimes roll with the 4000s, those gatorskins are too heavy. |
