Hello, just a quick post here as I will catch-up later. Our town was hit by a major flood thank god it was lower than they predicted but we prepared for the worst.  So my workout consisted yesterday of making and moving over 400 50lb sand bags.  Ouch lol.  I have a client that needed to go 4 high by about 100 feet just for the back of his restaurant.  Luckily the river crested about 1hr ago and everyone we tried to  save was ok.  Much of our town is underwater but they are the normal flooding areas, most businesses/neighborhoods are safe. I will post a couple pic from all the fun.  Safe training.

robburkett - 2011-02-28 4:57 PM I might be waxing a little philosophical here, but hey, when endurance training there's alot of time to think, right?

So for the Ironmen (gender-neutral term) in this group - Is it a "destination"?  I have a personal goal of an IM by the time I hit 45.  Hoping to clear that off my list next year.  But I foresee becoming a guy that does sprints and the occasional Oly after that.

I'm not asking if this is "right" or "wrong", but rather, what are everyone else's motivations behind going IM distance and why they repeat doing so.

And yeah, I realize that the reasons are various and sundry and they could very well fill a book.  Sorry if I derail the group but I thought it would be cool to get to the "why".

I thought I was going to be a "bucket list racer" one and done, but its such a tough race I just want to nail one.  The other thing is once you do a IM it's hard to do smaller races as the crowd support and atmosphere is SO awesome.  I love finishing and just hanging out at the finishing line watching people come through, its one of the coolest thing you can do.  Especially when you get close to midnight IMKY is like a dance club with light and music just blaring, people are yelling its a pretty experience.

My guess about 1/4 to 1/5 of most fields are 1st timers that will probably never do another IM.  I will say after one race you know what to expect which for me is not a good thing, your first race everything is a blur.

Either way just do one and see if you like it, you might get hooked.

I need a nap!  2200 yds in the pool today.  Actually starting to really feel the impact of proper technique on my core.  I had thought about going for a light run late tonight but I think I'll take a pass.

Scott - My father lost the battle to cancer in 2007 and I ran for the National Hospice Foundation in the Chicago Marathon that year.  Just as I did during the training that year, whenever I feel like training is getting too hard, I think about what he went through.  You have my utmost respect for the battles you've fought and won.

Dave - "Bucket list racer"  That's hilarious even if I am one.  We shall see.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

OK - Good Evening Team.

Hope everyone is having a great day - sorry to hear about the flooding coach - good luck and I hope everyone is safe.

After a very disapointing swim yesterday, guess where I am going tonight?

That's right - 8:30 lap swim.

Initially, I said there was no way I wanted an IM distance. Even watching LP last year, as I watched I remember saying there's no way I want to do 'that!' it's insane. Looking back, I think it was because I thought I couldn't. Now, I really want it and think that I CAN do it - Though I may be singing a different tune having been up and watched the torture again in July - I want it because it's making me push my limits, I want to start something and finish it. I have battled depression for many years ( a family 'gift') and for now, I'm doing well, working out, racing and having goals keeps me somewhat 'sane'. I have many regrets, I'm not about to add ' I wish I'd done that' to them.

Slept more like a rock....

KC - the character in your image is kicking too much and needs to practice bilateral breathing.

Endurance swim in the pool today.  I expect my time might actually approximate the time stpulated by the training plan.  I like how in the training plan that they'll stipulate 41 min for 2200 yds but there's 2 parts to the main set, 2 drills, warmup and a cooldown.  I might be doing something wrong but it takes me a second or two so that I can mentally switch gears.

What is the tattoo I have seen mentioned - does everyone do that after a IM?

Some triathletes get the Ironman logo tattooed on them when they finish an Ironman.  Here are some examples.

Had a great coached swim class this morning. Aside from almost drowning (kidding - just drank half the pool on a drill!) I got some great help with my form / stroke. I'm excited to swim again and practice. Computrainer tonight, should get the results of last weeks assessment for 'zones'.

Hey Keith.

Thanks for asking. I did not want to post too much because I don't want to bore this enitre group with my griping about my swimming anymore (except for a couple of you and you know who you are so thanks).

It went ok, better then Monday.
The best thing about the night is I ran into my chiropractor in the pool and he is a Triathlete. He is doing an IM in Texas in May and he did the IM in Panama City Beach this past November. We swam together for a bit. He was very positive and helpful. He talked to me about finding my pace, no matter how slow it may be so I am comfortable and not panicky and he talked to me about how important it is to relax and take my time.

So, long story short, I looked a lot better then this:

Have a great day everyone - I am going running!

It's amazing how much of a difference the sun can make.  Nice job on the swimming work.  Your hard work is gonna pay off big soon.

I ended up running on the indoor track this morning for a 6 mile tempo run b/c of the dark.  I cannot wait for the sun to be up at 5am!!!!
