NH | Subject: RE: Jeff Y's Group - CLOSED mambos - 2011-11-13 3:36 PM I survived the HM today! Finished with a time of 2:01:53! Beat my expected goal by 8min but was really hoping to go under 2hrs! Held a steady pace for the 1st 7miles and started to say off a little bit, at mile 10 we had to run over a bridge and the run up took everything I had! Last 2 miles were brutal to say the least, right after the climb I started to cramp in my left calf, kept having to stop and stretch to keep going! Either way for my 1st time doing this distance I am extremely happy with the results! Now the fun part of sitting in a car for 12 hours to get home! Should be a nice cramp filled ride! Great job for this race. You knew it would be a mental struggle at the end and it was, and I agree with Dirk about your comment. I love seeing that quote "for my 1st time" because that clearly implies there will be a second time. Next time the 2 hour barrier will be broken, you know what it's all about now. And get a race report up there so we can really comment on the race specifics. Edited by wbayek 2011-11-14 8:14 AM |

You did great to beat your goal time like that. You did more than survive I'd say. Your description of running up the bridge tells me that you tried to maintian pace and not effort. The rule for hill running (my rule anyway) is to run them by effort and not pace. At the bottom of the hill take stock of how your run effort feels physically at that point. Pace the run so the effort stays the same. You will make up the lost time plus some as you accelerate over the top and down the other side. Hope your long drive home went well! I've been in the throes of cramping after races and it's not a nice place to be.

Dirk; Next race is already scheduled! April 22, 2012 I will be running the Glass City half Marathon in Toledo. Support Staff!
And even though I am a foot taller than Austin he still leaves me in the dust! I think it has something to do with his 6 year head start into this sport! |

Pro 3804 Seacoast, NH! | Subject: RE: Jeff Y's Group - CLOSED Got my FTP test #1 done today. I was hoping for 265 and landed on 275. Really didn't expect that, but I'm pretty happy considering the lack of cycling this fall. I'm pretty sure I should have pushed it more at around 10 minutes and still been able to ramp up at the end. I went for an easy 1 mile run after as well. Zero issues with my legs....of course I was running like 9:40. Here's my graph. |

Thanks Jeff! I am now a sub 3 hour marathon runner!! (2:51:53) That's a pretty neat little link. I'll have to share that with a couple of guys at work that run. Jonathon, I would love to have a power meter but I wouldn't be looking forward to the testing. The TT for the bike is to agonizing! I have never done one but I recognize how much I need to. Maybe someday, just not now. Edited by DirkP 2011-11-15 4:45 AM |

NH | Subject: RE: Jeff Y's Group - CLOSED That's a serious FTP Jonathan. I guess that's why you hit the speeds you hit. Now the workouts are really gonna be tough because you can't cheat the numbers! I test tonight; I'm actually looking forward to it. How does your actual power compare to the KK estimates based on your mph? I'm going to use speed as a marker for my power this winter. I know the actual numbers may be off, but the relative numbers should work for the workouts. I'd love to get a power meter but that doesn't seem in the cards for a while, if ever. I'm going to do a few rides with a friends bike with a PM this winter so it'll be interesting to see how close the estimates are. |

I am still trying to trouble shoot it. My FTP was 275 for this test, but it was 283 for my last test. I am down from 192 to 184 so I think my relative power is a bit better, but my goal is to hit 300 this year. So basically my functional threshold power or 20 min power is the average power I can sustain for 20 mins. Just happens to be 275 watts right now. Using a kurt kinetic trainer, they have this equation and graph that is used to convert power to mph. It's supposed to be damn accurate. The equation is P = (5.244820) * S + (0.01968) * S3, where S is your speed. So for example, my speed for the 20 minutes was 21.74 per my computer (in this case a joule 2.0). If you plug that into the equation you get 316 watts for P (power). Obviously my power was 275, not 316. So either my computer is off, or something is wacky. I don't know which. |

My device cannot translate or comprehend complex equations! Although it does sort of explain the details in the bike plan I'm starting next week! But I don't have the power readings so I am going to go by HR%! http://youtu.be/A1a5x44XZAY With that song playing I would be expecting you to charge across the finishing line at Kona with the tape raised victoriously above your head. Oh and that power line you were running under is some of the type stuff I work on. And, I recommend you drive your car under it on a moist day (when the line is kind of crackling) and park underneath, get out of the car, allow 5 minutes to pass and then slowly grasp the door handle (again, slowly) and get back in the car. Also, I recommend that if you do it on the right day that someone video you doing this also and post it to youtube. You just need to trust me on this. I would be very entertained if you posted a video of the above....and so would many other people. No advice on the running for though. I'll let Jeff handle that. Edited by DirkP 2011-11-16 4:43 AM |
