I've been training using the Mark Allen Online website. It calls for weight training twice a week. It seems due to time constraints and fatigue, my strength training is always the first to get dropped. Also, the workout is always the same exercises, just different reps and sets, so boredom is a problem. I think my answer would really depend on your goals with strength training. ^^^^this Here's my short answer to your question: I think it's really important for women over about 35 to do specific types of weight training for the purpose of retaining bone density and muscle mass. That said, when I'm in this much of a SBR load, I just don't have time for it. When I can, at other times in the training (or not training) cycle, I do weight-bearing resistance training that's been shown to help build bone density and preserve muscle mass. If time, fatigue, and boredom are a problem ... don't do it. |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED jimmyb - 2012-02-27 5:46 AM Good Morning All. I am preparing to embark on a 4.5 hour trainer ride. Have the next 2 days off work and am very psyched to get in one last long ride, and run before the end of the month. Next month I am going to focus lots of more on my swim. I entered the Kona Lottery last week. It's such a long shot, but oh well. Yoooow! How did it go? Ok, so, I believe I am confused about Kona. Do you have to qualify for it and then once you do, enter the lottery? |

I'l probably reach 250-60-ish by the end of the month. Everything is holding up well. The biggest thing I have had to change is my diet. At almost 10 miles a day I have to eat an extra 1000 calories-ish. Needless to say, there is a jar of PB at my desk with a knife in it... Only if you like peanut butter! Also, I run at all different paces ALL the time. I get a few people in my department out there every now and again and if you EVER want to run, hit me up. Don't even worry about paces or distances. Sometimes it is just nice to have someone to run with. PLUS I know lots of routes in SODO. |

Do you have to qualify for it and then once you do, enter the lottery? It went well, I also managed to get in a short swim! There are now 3 ways to get into Kona 1) Qualify in age group (maybe when I'm 90 and have aero wheels on my walker and a Depends Tri Suit that I can wear the entire race) 2) Lottery - I think there are 100 names drawn annually. The lottery is open to anyone, but you must complete one branded IM the in the same year before Kona 3) Now can complete 12 branded IM's to gain entry. Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong. |

Nope, that's pretty much it. A few notes: 1) That usually means winning your AG in an IM or very select 70.3s, or if it's a huge AG, very near the top. 2) TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO ENTER THE LOTTERY FOR KONA 2012. Lottery just got a lot more complicated this year. Yes, there are 100 selected General Entries; 1 lottery entry is $40. You can purchase one additional entry for $50. HOWEVER, for each year past since 2004 you entered the lottery, you are given an additional entry. To give you an idea of the odds, in years past, 7000-8000 people purchased entries; anywhere between 1000-2000 also purchased the additional entry. Rumors are that this year, thousands more have both entered and purchased the additional entry because of Lance fever. 3) Yes, 12 branded full IM races. There's estimated to be only several score AGers who have done this (of course there will be more each year). You're not guaranteed immediate entry, there's a kind of line and system, but within a couple 2-3 years they expect all the 12ers as of now will be accommodated and they'll see from here on out about future qualifiers. Everyone wanting to do Kona must have completed a 70.3 or full Ironman branded race by the end of August. No exceptions. |

Today is the only day of halfway decent weather this week (we need the rain, but BOO anyway!), so its the day to do my 30 minute ride to Auburn! Lots of hills, a busy road, and pretty scenery...I am kinda looking forward to it... |

I was wondering why some of the time the announcer is like, "...and this is [so and so's] first marathon." I am guessing that is because they qualified at a 70.3. Well, I have a few things to focus on before IM... |

OK so it's my Garmin 910xt delivery day today!! Did a 30 min trainer ride right after Fedex dropped it off and used it on a walk around the block with the pup just to see how it did. Fantastic so far.
But I need schooling on HRM training, zones how to set them up etc. The try sports in my area is doing a 29% off of one item sale tomorrow for the leap year so I plan on picking up the cadence sensor and thursday they have a seminar on HRM training but any advice or tips would be helpful. |

Tripopo-there are many formulas for figuring out HR, or you could do your own "testing" during the sport, or have your testing done professionally where they put a mask on you and measure oxygen consumption. I have oxygen testing done for running and my HR zones are totally different than any conventional formula. Biking zones will be different than running zones, as will swimming. I just use my running zones but then that is the majority of my training. There was an article on it somewhere on BT, maybe someone can find it. At my level (free) on BT, I don't have access to all the articles. |

The temps are in the 60s and sunny!! I was going to go for my first outdoor bike ride of the season only to find out my back tire was flat! I pumped up my tires a couple of days ago and when I inspected my bike this morning, my tire was flat. I was too scared to pump up the tire and go out for fear I would get a flat 10 miles out. Unfortunately, I do not know how to change a back tire. What?!!! I really need to know how to take care of my bike myself. I'm a little spoiled, my husband is a total "bike guy" and always takes care of my biking needs. LOL, I feel like such a damsel in distress....lame I know. Anyway, I did workout. That counts for something, right? Always! Yep, most tyre-changing clinics and such teach how to change the back tyre for that specific reason. The nice thing is it's easy peasy for me to get the back tyre off and on my bike as well for any number of reasons, including packing and reassembly for travel. I have this AWESOME leaflet from Danskin Tri which I wish they would publish--everyone would buy it--fits so nicely in a saddlebag. It's step by step illustrated on how to change a back tyre ... |
