You're not useless at all. I've been in NYC for 10.5 years and I'm still finding my way! It's amazing how difficult change can be. And after being with someone for 11 years I'm single for the first time so in many ways, I feel like I'm starting all over again. So I could use any and all advice any of you can share. I'm just glad I'm old enough and have figured out (somewhat) who I am by now. That might make it a little easier. Although I imagine I'll be on here complaining about the slim options in no time

It took me a long time to figure out how to "make friends" as an adult.  After graduating from college, I found myself still living in Lafayette while all my close friends moved elsewhere.  The Dude and I were already living together so I always had a built in buddy to hang out with.  And he had friends that were local so we had a pretty fun group to party with.  Then he left for Iraq.  I realized that I was severely lacking in the near-to-me friends department.  It's been a slow climb into new friendships.  I had to make the effort to ask folks to dinner, or over to the house for a drink.  Five years later, The Dude's preparing for a deployment to Afghanistan.  This time when he's gone, I'll actually have someone to call at nine at night when I get a wild hair and want to go get ice cream or a drink or whatever.  Or I can just come hang out on BT...

Isn't it funny how making friends can be harder than dating? My life with the dude had a lot to do with that. We were together for 11 years, married for 6. I left my family and friends (in Michigan) and moved to NYC with nothing but him. Over the years I forgot who I was and here I am now trying to figure it out. It's been really hard but also really freeing in so many ways. It's amazing how many people I've met here, both virtually and in real life. Triathletes are incredible people so I feel like I couldn't have take up this sport at a better time in my life. I know I'm going to need a tremendous amount of support over the next year. It's all new territory for me.

I think Lafayette is not so far from where I grew up. I know I've been there. I fly to South Bend every time I go home!

So, you're telling us that you really were the shy, introverted type and blossomed out in the last year?

Hardly! I was incredibly independent and outgoing, then lost that for awhile, but have been gaining it back over the past couple years. But surprisingly I took a Meyers Briggs personality type test for work once and was borderline introvert (but still extrovert). Who knew

Morning Dark Arts!

wow 8:45 am ET and we're already talking about booze

LOL!

Beth, I just want you to know that, last night your mention of a vodka tonic forced me to go home and mix up a drink right away.  It prompted the following conversation between The Dude and I:

Dude: You're drinking?  I thought you were sick.
Me: It's not my fault.  Someone on the BT forum mentioned vodka tonic and it sounded really good.
Dude: Lush

Good Times.

I only had one drink...not two.  One drink makes me sleepy.  Two drinks makes me say: Hello.  I'm Emily and alcohol makes me easy.

I'm at the MCM expo and ate and drank my way through the freebies. They have a lot of beer. Not good beer, but who cares when it's free! I got about 12 tiny Larabars too. I just love race expos.

I obviously need to start signing up for bigger races if only for a race expo with free beer.
