My school is taking donations from the students for the wildfire victims... in case you haven't heard, TX has been having HORRIBLE wildfires... an area about 45 minutes to an hour from here has lost over 1000 homes!  I just heard a student on the announcements say that they are taking donations of, "diapers, toilets, and Gatorade"... Made me laugh out loud!!  (He meant to say toiletries, must not be a sight word in 5th grade!)

Long day for me today... skipped a morning workout and slept in till 6:00 a.m.!!  School all day, then a 2 hour class from 4:30-6:30, then race over to the start of a group ride with Tammy T.  She mentioned they are changing their route to include a MONSTER hill, known as Nolanville hill.  FUN!  I feel like such a dork, I'm wearing my bike clothes UNDER my school clothes to save time later... tri shorts, sports bra and a tank....

You're wearing your bike clothes under your school clothes?  Ummm, I don't know whether or not to call you a Large Douc#e or to call Dad and tell him to watch you because I know that A$$ is looking tight and right under those school clothes... Love you!

Just reminder, when your "stalling" me (as someone calls it) that you click the little box under my name in the upper left that says "daily history." You can see where I've walked my dog. And you thought I was actually training for an IM, you're all silly!

At least if you sweat you will be assured a quick dry. AND the extra padding in the seat. BONUS!

Those of us on the east coast are working on that 1000 mile aqueduct to get all our extra rain to you to help out.  I heard a report say that last week during our 'rain event' (as the meteorologists are calling it) 45 trillion gallons of water fell.

Hey Gang! Back from my canoe trip through northern lower michigan (AKA God's country).  We took several days go go 36 miles.  Lots of wildlife (none of it ours), beautiful weather and absoutely horrible food.  One of these days I'll learn how to pack for this type of trip.  Ted is now talking about doing a 100 mile trip next year, we'll see!  I'll be catching up on everyone's logs and adding some to mine.  Glad to be back home.

Hello my Peeeps!!  I know I haven't been on the forum much - my apologies. LIFE...need I say more?!

Okay, so I have this nutty idea that I'd like to throw at ya'll and I'd like your honest opinions...Deal?

Obesity in this country continues to get worse and the adults are not the only folks affected - the kids are getting heavier by the year! Sad to say the least.

There's this sport, maybe you have heard of it...called bicycling!! In cities like Boulder, San Antonio (TX) and 3 others in the nation, they have this program called B-Cycle where upon obtaining membership to the program, one can RENT a bike. Their bikes have gps and loads of other gadgets...

My idea is similar and goes something like this: A program where folks can either have a membership or not, rent a bike by the hour, day or week. Can even be taken out for a ride by someone who is familiar w/the rules of the road for a 'guided ride' (costs a little more!). We'll have a few kids bike (20") and then adult bikes (not roadies). They don't have to worry about maintenance or anything like that - just HAVE FUN on 2 wheels.

The whole idea is to get more people on the roads and help instill a healthier lifestyle in our community! A side benefit is more bikes on the road = more visibility to the powers that BE and more bike lanes etc!!

Crazy??

I want to introduce the idea this fall....around Halloween, by having a Fall into Fun Fitness Expo!!

Yes, let's BUILD THE AQUADUCT!!! While ya'll have had 45 trillion gallons of water fall.....we've had something like 90 days of triple digit heat!! Some of the lakes are 21 FEET below normal!!!

APOLOGIES FOR THE FORMATTING - BT is not playing nice with my copy and pasted words from Word.

Hi Tammy,

Since no one else has, I guess I’ll take a swing at commenting on what you wrote.  First off, I love the idea.  I’m sure in certain communities or areas, having access to a bike is a rare and precious thing.  Either that or it was like my family, where the kid had the bike but the parents didn’t see the need to own one now that they were grownups.

Okay, all that being said, a few questions pop into mind.

  1. Where are you going to do this?  I assume people need somewhere other than your garage to pick up and return the bikes and the more convenient it is, the more likely that they are to use the service.  So, do you need to get a storefront, have it near a park, put it on public land, etc?  Maybe you can piggy back with a local bike shop or public parks building…
  2. Logistically, who is going to be responsible for maintaining the bikes, signing them out, manning the bike rental booth/place, etc?  I know I don’t have a huge amount of time to commit to such an endeavor and I definitely couldn’t do the maintenance!
  3. I’ve got to assume that if you are going to have memberships that you are going to have to have to bill people regularly.  Who is going to do that and how are they going to track it?
  4. I’m thinking the easiest way to renew memberships is via credit card.  Who is going to go through the process of registering with the credit card companies?
    1. Side thought – if we’re looking to help underserved communities, how many of them have credit cards?
  5. Last but certainly not least, how are you going to pay for all this, particularly the bikes?  Since you have so many children, you might be able to sell one or two, depending on current market conditions, for seed capital but that’s illegal in this country so you might be better off approaching various stores to donate.  In a sign of the times, many will want to be able to deduct whatever they donate.  That means you’ll probably have to either start up your own 501(c)(3) or piggy back on someone else’s charitable status.  Perhaps the local community foundation can help you with this and/or the funding issue.

Take this as just some rough thoughts that I came up with but don’t see it as a wet blanket on your great idea.  I just tend to think about all of the potential problems and issues that can come up when starting new projects.  It is encoded in my Eeyore-like nature.

Oh – If you are willing to put in the time over the next six weeks, I think a fitness expo would be much easier than the bike idea, at least initially.  You’d have to get moving ASAP to line up people to come (the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society always seem to be at these things…along with rehab places (no, not the kind that Hilde hangs out at, the physical rehab kind), doctor’s offices, orthodontists (there is always a crazy one around who caters to kids), bike shops, big box sporting goods stores, local grocery and other stores, local juice/beverage/water companies, local triathlon/bike/running clubs, local organizations that put on races, local sporting teams (little league, basketball, etc), local party places to donate the time of a bouncy house or other games…that sort of thing.  Just make sure you advertise it in many different ways so people come and the vendors want to come back the following year.

Again, I tend to be a very big thinker so take all that I typed with a Wilson sized grain of salt (and perhaps a Keeks sized margarita to go along with it).  Odds are that such a fair will be small the first year but I’m sure you can grow it!

I hope this helps and wasn’t too much…

Tammy, yes, the bike idea is crazy... that's why it's great! It will take a bit of a tidal shift before people are clamoring for it, but it's definitely something we need. As a frequent traveler, I would LOVE to be able to pick up a bike for a few hours in a new city.

And here's a T-shirt for everyone's Christmas list:

Took my bike in for 100 mile tune-up and they found a crack on my frame....said it's in a common spot and typically due to a defect in production.

He's pretty sure it'll be covered under warranty so I told him I'm pretty sure if it's not he can pay it off for me too...

Nonetheless, he says its about a 2-3 week process so looks like the pavement will be my new bestie for the next few weeks.  SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK :-/

But I just keep trekking.  It'll all work out in the end.  LMAO I SWEAR I had a dream last night that you and Tuck were riding bikes up Nolanville hill and I was driving slower in my car than you two were biking, and you guys were laughing at me....WEIRD!
