I do not own a wetsuit and I'm still not sure wheather or not I need to get one. Anybody hearing anything on the water temp there? I've read the last 2 years the water was at 80 or above.

From the FL Ironman 70.3 website FAQ http://www.floridahalfironman.com/info.php

Are wetsuits allowed?

* Yes, in accordance with USAT wetsuit / water temperature rules. In fact, wetsuits are strongly advised for races early in the year as the water is typically very cold.

However, please note that water temperatures at late-season races such as Ford Ironman 70.3 Florida can get up to 84-85 degrees. Wetsuits will only be permitted if water temperatures are below USAT guidelines at any of our events. Go to www.usatriathlon.org for complete rules. For example, the water temperature has been over 80 degrees the past two years at Ford Ironman 70.3 Florida and wet suits have not been allowed at that event.

Did I read this wrong? The Athlete Guide says that temperatures in Orlando in May are usually in the 60s. That may be true when transition opens up at 4:45 am, but not at any other time during the race.

3 weeks.  How's it going?  Doing okay over here, still a bit amazed that my program didn't have me swim the distance at least one time non-stop, although I did so on my own a few times.  Can't wait - anyone want to share their goals for this race or do you want to wait until the final week.  I'm going to wait because I find mine has changed in the last two weeks.  Just checking in.

Tough few days for me, somehow cough a cold and I missed a few workouts.

I think If I can sleep it off today, then I can get back to swimming tomorrow.

3 weeks out, crazy where the time went.

I was originally training for this to be an A race (Louisville being my other A race of the year) and hoping to be at or around 5:45. After 2.5 months of mono all races but Louisville have become C races - I can't risk loosing out on training days for Louisville. So, now it will be trainnig pace for FLA. Under 6 would be nice, but again Louisville comes first.

Had a 4 hr brick yesterday (3hr ride, 1 hr run) and have a 2 hr run today (going to be tough!). This is my first HIM and 2 tri ever so I'm trying to be realistic. Anything under 6 would be amazing, but if I finish in under 6:30 I will be happy.

My swim times suggest a 40-45 swim, bike 2:50-3:10, and run 2:00-2:10. But in the end....who knows. My only real goal is to smile a lot, have fun, and finish.

I completed the Bassman Int'l Tri as my warm up race yesterday morning at 2:38. Should have a race report up soon. I felt really good and wanted to keep going! Going to do a 60mile ride/6 mile run brick next weekend then taper. At this point, it is more for confidence then training. Starting to get nervous/excited!!

I guess my goal is just to finish... (somewhere between 6 - 6:30 would make me very happy). I am still scared out of my head about the swim portion - thinking I'll be o.k. if I can make it out of the water.. do they have lots of people in kayaks for help in the water? maybe if I can get one of them to dangle a beer in front of me, I'll be able to keep swimming for the whole thing... (wish I didn't float like a rock.)

I just got home from St. Anthony's-and I can tell you all it is already HOT in South Fla. I would highly advise getting out in some heat while training these last few weeks. I thought I could deal with the heat, but it made for a tough run!! I just want to survive the race at this point.

I was at Ft. Wilderness Sunday to look around. I took the water temp. It was 81 but felt warmer. Waded out to my calves and it felt fine.
Then i re-familiarized myself with the run course. It seemed a lot more off-road while suffering through the last year.
Rode the northern part of the bike course for the third time. The uphills are all bunched in about an 8 mile stretch from avalon/hertzog to just before stonybrook. Everything else is pretty flat.
Good luck to all, save me some food this year!

Clydesdale here!

Had my first tri of the season on Saturday and was at a fighting weight of 221. With three weeks to go I'm hoping to shed some more weight to make the run alot easier.

Can anyone give me some thoughts on the swim conditions (average). I assume it's salt water?? How about waves, is it normally choppy or smooth. I know weather conditions dictate the water, but what should I expect on the swim on an average morning. I am ready for this swim to be over asap!!!

Unfortunatly here in Va we have hit a cooler spell - no hot weather training for me. I am pulling out the long sleves for the run today! That heat is gonna hurt!

The swim takes place in the "white sand beach of Clementine Beach in Fort Wilderness" better known as Bay Lake.  It's about as calm as they get.  No salt water.  If it's anything like the Walt Disney Oly last year the only taste in your mouth will be diesel fuel from the pontoon boats.  At that Oly they had too many Pontoons way too close to the swimmers.  But that was not an Ironman race so it could be different.  Here is the link to the FL 70.3 site.   http://www.floridahalfironman.com/

Have a good training day, because they're running out.

Does anyone know where, in close proximity to the race site, w could do an open water swim before the race? I thought I heard somewhere that Bay Lake will not be open to do a swim the day before the race but I have a friend traveling with me that would really like to find a lake to get one moew OWS in before the race. Suggestions?

Been lurking on this thread but have not joined…my husband and I are doing the Florida 70.3. Now that I have posted that information here, my race is official! Smile

I don’t have any questions that haven’t already been asked. And I definitely do not have any advice seeing as this is my first HIM. I already have the pre-race jitters. My goal is simply to finish. Would like to finish in 6:30 but finishing is good. Mainly concerned about nutrition and my ITB acting up on the run. Heat…I hope I will be okay with that. I am originally from GA. Currently live in TX. We had a cold front this weekend but otherwise we have been able to train in some heat. Not 90 degrees but….

Hope to meet some of you at the race/expo. Have you discussed a meeting place by chance? Or are you wearing BT paraphernalia?

First HIM distance will be in Orlando in a few weeks. I am working on my nutrition plan and I wanted to know if they pass out water and gatorade in bottles or in cups. If I can grab a plastic bottle and refill by aerobar profile design water bottle, then that will allow me to carry less fluids from the start. Any advice on bike aid station details would be great. Thx

Mario

I know that feeling. I just finished my last long run and it's awesome. This is my first HIM and I'm ready to go! I also got lucky (I live in St. Louis) and have the ability to do an open water swim tomorrow. It will be my only chance to do this before the race. Hope training is going well for all!!

Last mega week for me, off Monday, and then taper for two weeks.

Things on my list
Get the bike checked out.
Get some new air cartridges and new tubs and stretch them out.
Get fresh patch kit.
Get aero bottle, I really don't know why I've waited so long.
Run shoes are OK, and I know the trail is going to kill them so I don't need any new here.
OWS this weekend and I hope next just to work out some of my mental OWS stuff (plus check out the new wetsuit).
Sunday is a mock tri, I hope to OWS 1 mile, ride 40+ and run 4-6, like I said Monday is a off day.

OK, that's my stuff, I know you guys are doing about the same.
So spill you guts.
