WOW! You have all done such a great job in this first week of our challenge. I am so proud of all of you!

Our first week results are as follows:

Weight Loss Warriors (Team A): With 11 out of 13 members reporting have a weight loss percentage of 27.2%

Team Lift (Team 1): With 14 out of 15 members reporting have a weight loss percentage of 20.8%

This was a pretty close week but the week one champion title belongs to the WEIGHT LOSS WARRIORS!!!

GREAT JOB!

Remember, our next weigh in is Sunday, June 15th. Reporting results will need to be finished by Monday, June 16th at noon Eastern.

WOW! You guys are doing GREAT! For those of you that lost really big numbers this week please focus on just keeping that weight off for the next few weeks rather than exceeding your goals. You have done a fantastic job. Not all the reporting has been done yet but we are sitting really pretty right now.

That is exactly what I am going to do!! I am staying on WW but if I can maintain a week I will be thrilled. Ok, I would be more thrilled with a 6.5. If you could see what I ate two weeks ago compared to last week you would be shocked and understand why I lost so much.

I had to. I tried and tried to lose on my own and just couldn't. I pushed my workouts up and up and up and finally realized I needed the structure of WW. SIGH..but it does work and it is healthy so I guess that is good. I am doing the CORE plan so if you aren't familiar you just eat off of a list of foods instead of counting points. I love it so far (one whole week ).

Yes, and if you keep searching you can find the even more detailed list. The hardest thing for me is that there is no bread at all. There are other carbs but no bread at all. :>O

Ummm....yeah...I would DIE! I'm a big-time carb lover (that is the majority of my weight problem!).

Okay, so I tried to discuss weight loss with my "I've never been fat in my whole life" husband tonight. I shared the information I've gleaned through this post as well as other conversations/shows/books/etc. that I've read on the weight loss subject. Anyway, I told him I was going to prove some things to him. I don't seem to lose weight when I eat 1300-1400 cals/day but I do when I eat 1500-1600 cals/day. I know it sounds crazy but it seems to work. Based on the links provided in this website, I should take in 2500+ cals/day just to maintain weight (with my current activity level) so to lose 2 lbs/week I need to have a daily deficit of 1000 calories which means I need to eat 1500 cals/day and exercise approximately 1 hour/day. As I mentioned before I wasn't sure how many calories I was burning/day so I did some research and found this site:

http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc

I found many other sites that estimated calories burned but feel this one is most accurate because it requires you to input your weight and it breaks down your activity level so instead of saying "running for 1 hour = X calories burned" it will tell you how many calories you burn if you run at a pace of 6, 7, 8, etc mph.

So, my new goal is to eat around 1500 cals/day and exercise enough to burn off 1000 calories. That equates to about 1 hour biking, 2 hours swimming, and a little over 1 hour running. Thankfully I swim and run on the same day so I don't have to do a full 2-hours of swimming!

Wait...does that make sense? Am I confusing myself??? Dang it...now I have to think through this again... Do I need to eat even MORE than 1500 calories??? OH MAN...I HATE MATH!

Edited to say: Okay, I think I have it right!

So if you eat 1500 calories a day you STILL have to exercise that much? Yes, I totally agree with your logic about not eating enough calories though.

BTW, I read a great article in Allure magazine about myths of weight loss at the doctor today. I didn't see it at the grocery store but I am going to try to find it so we can discuss some of it. :>D

It seems that way.

Here is how I figured it:
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) x Activity factor = daily caloric needs
1620.4 x 1.6 = 2592 calories (let's round to 2600 for easy math)

NOTE: 2600 is my daily caloric need just to maintain weight. Anything less than 2600 cals/day should help me lose weight.

To lose 2 lbs/week (1 lb = 3500 calories) I need to have a calorie deficit of 1000 calories/day

For my weight (rounded numbers for easy math)
60 minute bike riding at 14-16 mph = 1000 calories
60 minutes swimming at moderate pace = 500 calories
60 minutes running at 6 mph = 1000 calories

Got those from: http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc

So, exercising 1 hour on the bike daily should give me the 1000 cal deficit and I should lose 2 lbs that week.

SOMEONE ANSWER THIS QUESTION....

WHY THEN do I NOT lose weight when I'm eating 1300-1400 calories routinely and exercising 1-1 1/2 hours/day???? It seems when I eat MORE (i.e. 1600-1700 cals/day) I tend to lose.

I'm so confused by this whole thing. Why can't I be one of those fat people that start walking for exercise and start dropping the weight???!!! I work my BUTT off but my BUTT never comes off!!!***

It's so frustrating.

***I really don't want to be one of those people because I know I am much healthier because of what I do and I really do love what I'm doing it's just really frustrating to work so hard and see such little progress. I've been overweight my whole life and in the "obese" category for many years.

Tracy,

I can't give you the science behind it but from all of the magazines and books I have read if you eat too little calories you body goes into starvation mode and will hold onto everything it can but if you feed it the correct amount (in your case 1600-1700) your body becomes a furnace burning off the fat and using the calories for energy.  The same goes for hydration, the less you drink, the more your body holds onto every drop it can but the more you drink(not too excess) you body just holds onto what it needs and then you pee out the rest.

If I am totally off base, someone can completely flame me though because I don't know the exact science behind it.

Yeah, I know all that on a basic level but as a Biologist I always want to know the science (or math!) behind things! I have always heard "don't eat less than 1200 calories a day" because your body will go into starvation mode. Well, I'm NOT eating less than 1200 calories but it seems my body may be going into starvation mode anyway. I wish I knew a nutritionist! UGH!

I doubt that they have the answers you search. The true specialists in this area are the experts in metabolism and physiology.

I agree with bulldog on his starvation comment (among which the breakdown of muscles to get extra energy). I hope that the 1500 will work better for you and if it will work better then why not try building it up more gradually as long as the result stays good?

I know its not sunday ...but I weighed in this am and I'm down 2...YEAH.... It has been really hot here and the heat broke yesterday. I hope to get some good workouts in. I am working the next 4 days and this tends to be my downfall. So MUCH junkfood.

I was thinking of doing another oly thats local this weekend. I'm going to see how it plays out. The weather may be rainy, so I am going to wait to race day and see how it goes.

The lakes in my area have warmed so that you can swim without a wetsuit. I have had 2 OWS this week that have been fantastic. I'm not a big fan of the "sausage casing" but I enjoy swimming in the open water.

Hope everyone is having a healthy week!
