Great swim!  I am heading out to New Paltz this morning for my much anticipated swim clinic with Terry Laughlin at the Total Immersion studio.  Love those endless pools!  I started swimming a year and a half ago and was a drowning waiting to happen.  Started with TI and am still slow, but happy.  Will fill you in when I return.

Did my first swim workout Thursday - I did maybe 500 yards.  I didn't think I could be so tired after just 1/2 a lap.  I go back again tomorrow and then see how I can fit it in the work week.

lforce - 2009-01-09 1:31 PM does anybody know if there is a way to flag this thread so you can jump right to it as opposed to finding it in that big list of mentor groups?  also can anybody with some experience post some average times in a sprint tri?  just curious how fast people typically go...

Towards the bottom of the screen there's a box that says "Actions" and "Toggle email notifications" click that any you'll get e-mail notifications with a link to this thread.  You could probably bookmark the thread too.

I survived a swim with my bicycle!

After a month with snow on the ground we were all anxious to get on the roads again.  And with surgury approaching fast I was doubly anxious.  So I completed my ride today in the POURING RAIN! I was hoping it would let up but it never did. I swear if felt more like swimming than riding. But I love merino wool.  Even though I was soaked after a few minutes of riding I was fairly warm the whole time.  Highly recomend it!

This trying to eat what is good for me is almost killin' me.  My old diet was refined sugars, Lards, and high energy drinks,(NOS, Rock Star, Amp,etc.)  It was almost better than working out, It got my blood pressure up, my pulse up, I didn't sweat and the next day my muscles didn't hurt.   And the taste of Yellow Zingers, Mmmmmmm.

Now, yogurt isn't so bad, applesauce and fruit are OK. But if I don't snack before I go to bed I wake up feeling like I'm being stabbed at 1AM.  I think the Captain Crunch and regular MT Dew may be the last to go in June, about the 27th.  I'm down about 12lbs since Nov.  I'm really missing all the hollow useless calories I used to eat...............

Week 1 - Epic Fail...

It started out good enough, got my workouts in and felt good...  Then a snow storm and 2 swim meets threw a hitch into my plans and I completely failed to adjust...  3 "rest" days in a row  :-(  Hopefully today I'll finish the week on a decent note and work on a better week 2.

Ok, y'all. I've been a little AWOL. And this is "my" group, huh? I'll write more later, and we're all gonna get our butts in gear. I guess I've been needing that myself. But, long story short, I ended up getting an MRI on the knee since it's still showing some swelling. It's good news. I feared a meniscus tear. It's not - just an irritation, plus some patellar tendonitis. Nothing severe. guess it's all about getting old! We just don't heal as quickly anymore. Damm these youngsters! I remember how one day you'd get totally banged up and the next day it was like nothign happened. Now I stub my toe and it takes a full year to recover. Oh well, what you gonna do?

longest run ever today, 7.5 miles, never thought i'd be able to go that far without stopping, was pretty exciting, and didn't feel as bad as i thought it would, 8:43 pace, maybe there's a half marathon in my future...

Spent yesterday at the Total Immersion Swim Studio in a Freestyle workshop with Terry Laughlin.  It was a fantastic experience.  Most of the time was spent deconstructing the elements of the stroke and working on drills to imprint correct form, streamline body, reduce drag etc.  Most importantly, it totally motivates you to want to swim more often....something I need.  Check out the website:  www.totalimmersion.net

Also just heard that Mavic is recalling all R-Sys front wheels for safety concerns.  If you bought a pair like I did last year, take the wheel back to your lbs.  You'll get a set of ksyriums to use (and keep) until they can replace your R-Sys later in the spring.  You can also check out the mavic website for more info.

I should have run today....having a hard time wanting to go outside.

HAHA! yeah It was my longest ride in month and second longest since the crash in August. But I wasn't alone!  I saw a few other crazy people training as well.  It's frustrating to see how much fitness I've lost though.

I'm down a couple of pounds this week.  Which is a good thing and surprising.  I ate well for 5 days, fell of the wagon and snacked on crap all day Friday and went to a fancy 3 course dinner with chocolate mousse for dessert.  Then rode yesterday and hit the pub up for a"healthy" dinner of nachos and edamame and pitchers of fizzy carb loaded "recovery drinks."

It's nice to see the numbers drop.  Even if it is probably just water weight from yesterday's ride. I will be at least 20lbs lighter for Alcatraz come June. Back on the wagon today!!

Well Sunday I simulated the first two legs of the race I am thinking about doing on Feb 1st. It was a 2 mile run and 6 mile bike ride. Although I finished fairly strong in about 43 minutes, it was not nearly as easy as I had thought it was going to be. I am really glad I didn't jump right into the pool and have to swim 400 yds. I am thinking I may not be as ready as I want to be come the 1st.

It was an eye opener, especially the transition. It took me about 3 minutes to change shoes and get on the bike, partly because I had to get my bike out of the SUV. It was still a good practice run. I know I need lots more work.

Good brick workout. Come race day, your adrenaline will carry you through that swim.

BTW, Have you thought about looking for some duathlons (run/bike/run)?

I have thought about it. I have never kept to a training plan long enough to carry me through a whole summer though. So for now it is one race at a time, and this mini sprint seemed very do-able (if that is a word). I don't know what the standard races are but I think something in the 2/18/2 range is possible.

I don't think most of us are ever as ready as we want to be but you are doing the right thing practising transition.  Try out your clothes too, for my first tri, I swum in a crop top and biked in a singlet - trouble was when I was wet, I couldn't get the singlet on, it got stuck halfway.  I was squirming around until another  competitor took pity on me and pulled it down.  Practise putting on helmet, gloves, sunnies.  Pile them up with the helmet first, straps out so you can put it straight on, put gloves, sunnies in the helmet in the order you put them on.  You can do this at home and it just gives you that bit more confidence on the day.  Think about how to lay out your gear in transition, it all helps to calm you down.  You'll be fine, honest.

x2 on practicing transitions.  It's fun when you pass people in T1.

Mid week check in.  How's everyone doing?

I'm getting in decent workouts this week. Weather is turning frigid for the next few days though. Plus, I actually went for a run yesterday on that bum knee. It was ok! A good mile and a half!

I've skipped two runs this week - its a rest/fallback week so I don't feel so bad, but I've got to force myself to go out tomorrow morning in the cold (and possibly snow).

Doing pretty good this week. Decided I got a little ambitious with my training plan and toned it down a bit. I may also juggle which races I focus on so I don't get burned out to soon.

Started out ok, but missed Monday (due to complete lack of motivation) had a strong Tuesday and then nothing today due to work.  Could try to jam something in tonight, but think I'm better off getting back on the morning schedule tomorrow. Have some catching up to do.

I'm having trouble with my routine too.  The gym I was using closed and I'm finding it hard settling in the new place.  I turned up on Monday and couldn't get my little boy in the creche so just had to go home.  The lane availability in the pool is all over the place; I'm used to turning and swimming whenever I want.   It's really only a little niggle in the grand scheme of things but irritating.
