I just realized the first tri (for me) is April 5th - If my math is right that means only 10 weeks!!

And then the 1/2 marathon on April 25th - just 3 weeks later -

Ummm, time to get my butt in gear!

Hey everyone!

I've had an exciting few days.  I went for my first visit to our LBS...got measured up and bought a tri bike!!  They have a bunch of 2008 Felt S32's on closeout and I was able to get sweet deal.  It'll be in in about a month...I can't wait!

Also...I spent time today in the pool, after my swim, practicing flip turns.  I think I've got it down!  It's been a goal of mine for quite a while and I finally put the time in and got it done.

Hope everyone is doing well.  Anything planned for the weekend?

out of curiousity, how much was the bike, I need to buy one..

At what intensity (HR Zones) should I do my "long" 5-mile runs at?

The answer to your question about zone and long runs is, "it depends."  Usually your training plan will dictate what zone you should be in.  There are long temp runs and long hills runs, but I venture to guess or assume that the intent in your plan for the long run is that it is to develop endurance.  My long endurance runs are described as zone 1 and zone 2.

Had a mini break through this morning.  I finally got up to two miles running without stopping in between miles for a break.  Haven't been able to do this since way before chemo.  (Oh, and I was 20 pounds lighter then too).  Small feat, but I am psyched!  Now, new goal is to get to three miles without stopping.

Congrats on the flip turns.  I have a friend who just said that he has recently learned too.

Speaking of goals - I just officially signed up for my half marathon at the end of April.

And nervously looking at my run volume to date.

And realizing I only have been running 3x a week.  Need to find a 4th day - might have to make use of the apartment treadmill while I'm taking care of the boys in the evening (wife works evenings).

Maybe I can fly Terps out here so she can run it for me . . .  You'll need to bulk up though.

Are you following a training plan of any sort for the half-marathon?  I used Hal Higdon's and it worked very well for me.

Well, I finally bit the bullet and have found a swim coach to help improve my swim.  I felt like I was consistently spinning my wheels in the pool and getting discouraged by the lack of improvement (notice the lack of swim volume of late - partially "I'm sick of the weather" related and partially "why is this so hard" related.

So, I start next Wed. and meet once a week.  I know someone who is utilizing the same coach for swimming and feels that he has seen a lot of improvement in his technique...the coach first focuses on technique and then on strength and endurance once technique has improved.

Wish me luck!

Let us know how the swim coaching goes!

I got a call from my LBS and my new bike is already in!  Yay!  I go on Saturday at noon for the fitting.  I can't wait to get 'em home and take him for a ride on the trainer (which I will have to purchase as well).

I'll post pictures.  I'm so excited!

Since we're both Michiganders I'm curious as to which bike shop did you purchase at and how you think the fit process went?  I'm hoping in a couple of years to have done well enough at work to have the money to buy a tri-specific bike.  It's never too soon to dream and start thinking where to buy!

Jeff you have plenty of time to increase your run volume for the 1/2.  Just do it in small increments so you stay strong and injury free.

I went to Bikesport Michigan in Dearborn.  They have the 2008 Felt S32's on closeout for about $940, clipless pedals included.

I'll let you know about the fitting...it is tomorrow at noon.

Everything you heard is true...I had a great experience with Bikesport.  My bike arrived about 2 weeks early.  The fitting went really well.  Tom spent a ton of time with me.  He is very detailed and made sure to explain everything so that I would understand.  I'd highly recommend checking the place out if you are in the market for a new bike (or even if you have a bike and want to get a good fit).

I've heard some others say that it's taken months to get their bikes in....and I met a man while there yesterday that said the same.  So, that part of it can be hit or miss.  I was lucky enough to get mine super fast.  I'm guessing it's because I bought last years model.  If you're buying a brand new bike from this year...it could take a little longer to ship.  But...once you get it, Bikesport takes care of you.

Great job!  That is awesome.  What's everyone shooting for in February?

I've got a 5K next Saturday....I'm running it with my sister and we're pushing her 15 month old son along with us.  It should be a blast.
