Hey everyone. Long time no type.

I was talking about this site with my TNT people today and apparently there is another person on my team who comes on here and we agree this site is fantastic! :-)

Anyway, I am going to be a bum and post the link to my TNT website. People say my story is inspirational so maybe you'd be inspired.  If you would like to donate - even $1.00, that would be great! (or pass the link on to your friends.)

I am terrible at fundraising.  But it is for a good cause.  Anyone have any fundraising advice?

Oh by the way, here is my link - if anything, check it out, I spent a lot of time on this website and it is a good story I guess: http://www.wix.com/danett27/Running-the-Race

Oh! I have a question. I want to link my training log to my site. Is there a way to do that?

with care,

I did San Diego Rock n Roll marathon with TNT years ago. Great organizaton, great cause, and a great group of people.

I too was horrible at fundraising, hated to ask anyone for money. Here's how I raised my money (about $4,000) -

Convinced my work to do a jeans/dress down day for $3 per employee. All money raised went to my fundraising. Not everyone in the building participated, but a lot did and I raised close to $700.

Put a letter with prepaid envelope on mailboxes in my neighborhood, and a few surrounding neighborhoods. The letter explained what I was doing, who I was doing it for, had a picture of our patient hero (a little boy as cute as can be!), and why we needed their help. I never thought anyone would send in anything, but I raised over $2,000 that way. People really are very generous and giving if it's for a good cause.

More came from my family and friends. I was short more than I planned but put the rest in myself.

Good luck, you'll be surprised at how quickly it adds up.

Hi Karen:

Thanks for your help.  I have got to work on the physical letters. What did you think of my website?  I have only raised about 600 since I put it up on Thursday and am getting very worried.

I wish we could have  dress down day at work but I live in the impossible New York City where dress down day is still dress up!

I guess I can try to pass on to neighbors but am a little concerned. I live in a big impolite city and it may not go over well but I gues I can start with the immediate neighbors.  How much did you end up spending in copies?  I guess a trip to Kinkos is in order for me!

I think your website is pretty awesome and inspiring. Looks like a lot of work.

I think you'll be surprised by how giving people are, even if you have never met them. I can't remember how much we spent on the letters, but we did do the self-addressed stamped envelope which I think made a difference in people returning them. I actually did it with my friend/neighbor so we had the letter worded so that it was from the both of us. We split the cost of everything, stamps included.

My friend also did some auctions of baked goods she made at her office. They couldn't do dress down either, but she made cakes, brownies, cookies, etc. and auctioned them off. Of course she had to pay for the ingredients and her time, but she made quite a bit that way.

Hi!

Thanks for the good advice.  I think that the idea of the auction is a good one.  Fundraising is hard for me. I hate asking for things! So maybe this is a good experience for me. :-)

My first marathon is in the books.  The Carlsbad Marathon was great!  Beautiful course along the beach, I was covered in salt spray by the finish, well maybe it was sweat.  I finished in 3:40... I think.  I forgot to look at the official clock, and the results are not posted yet.

My knees are swollen and legs are sore,  I don't think I trained enough or had a long enough base period.

Ha, well I do feel a little better now that I am not the only one.

Sweet bike, my LBS is a Giant dealer and I looked at them some but have never ridin one, do you like it? do you love it?

Awesome marathon pic, I don't think I would be able to finish that at this point in my endurance training, but maybe one day.  I do love Carlsbad though!

I LOVE my bike! I have ridden only a few other bikes, but the Giant is the best by far.  There is something to be said about getting a bike from a company with so much money to spend on R&D.  I'm thinking I might use it for the Ironman this year, with aerobars and some Zipp wheels.

I'm having some issues with the computer on my bike maybe someone could shed some light on.

Mounted computer has working batteries and seems to be functioning fine.  However when I got the bike the wheel magnet had been removed.

While at my LBS spending too much money on other things I mentioned I needed the wheel magnet and they tossed one on my pile of other things. It is flat spoke magnet with a taco style design held together by a small screw.

Well I mounted it, probably incorrectly, but I am still not getting any feed back on the computer display (rpm, mileage etc all still zero).  So I changed the battery on the sensor... still not getting any output.

Did I mount the magnet wrong?  Any other suggestions?  I didn't think it would be this difficult.

 Thanks

On the wireless mounts I had had, the pickup would have an arow showing where to position the magnet, usually the bottom quarter of the pickup, it usually needs t be within a wisker of the magnet/pickup touching as the wheel/magnet passes the piskup.

Or just look up the computer's instructions online.

Good luck!

just got back from a freaking colllllllld ride out there.  Took my bike to the train station for the empty giant parking lot and did some sprints up and down the lanes.

I was really excited to try out some of my new bike gear.

Needless to say I got my butt back to my apartment as fast as i could and hooked the bike back up to the trainer.

still too cold out there.

Well I went for a ride, I fiddled with the magnet and sensor some and got it to pick it up finally. You were right it has to be all but touching the sensor in the proper position to pick it up.  So I began my ride and quickly noticed a problem.  I can not get the magnet to stay put on the spokes.  So after about 45 seconds on my ride I lost signal with the magnet.  So either i am dumb and attaching it wrong, or i need a new one that will better fit these flat spokes.

I rode today too, with some new people. Very nice group, good ride too. It was cold too - I went and picked up some arm and leg warmers at the bike shop after. Watch, now we'll probably get a heat wave!

For no other reason than I hate having to search the 2nd page for our group....

Maybe we should change our Group's name to "We are too busy training to sit around on the web all day"

No kidding - the 2nd page is bad! Where is everyone? Training? Let's hear about it then!

It's so cold here - I just finished running 7 miles after work in 3 very thick long sleeve shirts, plus a full length sports top. That's basically 4 layers on my body, 3 on my arms, gloves, hat (yes I looked like a complete dork!) and UA tights. I never shed a layer, which is unusual for me because I sweat like crazy.

I've got a 50 mile bike ride scheduled for Sunday that I'm excited about, and a 10 or 12 mile run planned for Saturday.

What's everyone else doing this weekend?

I wish that were the case. I'm been too busy working to sit around on the web all day. Let's get this puppy going. I fly home tomorrow--been in Portland--so should have some time to surf the web and get so discussion going.

Here is a start--We are buying my wife a new bike soon. One of the things I wish I knew more about with bikes is the difference between a 650 cm wheel and a 700 cm wheel besides that one is smaller. What are the performance differences? My wife is tiny (5'2.5" on her tall days she tells me) and we will probably have to go with a 650 cm wheel to get the proper fit. Any comments on 650's?
