We probably won't get there until around 3:30 or 4. Our plan was to go to the Expo for packet pickup, and then check out the pasta dinner at the RenCen. I heard that that dinner is nice, but PACKED. My friend told me there is a bar nearby that also serves a spaghetti dinner and is much more manageable. I'm up for whatever though. |

Expert 833 Adrian, MI | Subject: RE: Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon : Official Thread Detroit Dan - 2009-10-14 8:30 AM I don't even know what the expo is? I was going to pickup my stuff and go. Time will be short. I assume you know expo is at Cobo. In order to get your packet you literally have to walk through a maze of vendors selling gear, promoting other races, products, etc. |

Extreme Veteran 594 Grosse Pointe Woods | Subject: RE: Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon : Official Thread My wife & I are planning to do the expo around 11ish Saturday Morning. As expos go, Detroit has been darn good in the past. Dan, don't rush, this is all part of taking in the event. Detroit was my 1st 1/2 a few years back and I remember thinking to myself, man, I have never been around so many fit people in my life (and in one of the nation's fattest cities to boot). I want to walk out to the start finish line to check out the porta-potty situation (was has stunk in the past), find a rendezvous site for my wife & just get a feel for the new starting area (and gauge what kind of walk it is from Cobo). I am bummed we don't finish down Woodward this year! |

Master 3022 | Subject: RE: Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon : Official Thread SkierDan - 2009-10-09 1:45 PM I will be running with the 8:00 pace group...shooting for a 3:30 or better. Let me know if you are in that group of people I will keep an eye out for you. I usually don't sign up for them, just tag along so that at the half if I am feeling good I can do my own thing. I am running the half and am thinking of running with the 8:00 pace group. Plan would be to run with them and if feeling strong enough after the tunnel and the cobo hill to try to break away. |

Extreme Veteran 454 Canton, MI | Subject: RE: Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon : Official Thread I am bringing this back up: yorkee - 2009-08-31 10:10 AM This is where the starting line. Last year, it is almost impossible to find anyone in the dark before the race. I propose we gather here under the advertisement sign 1/2 hr before the race? That said, it might be so crowd and the situation is unexpected. Now someone propose a better meeting spot if possible... |

With the time starts some groups are leaving at 7:15 or so. |

Expert 771 Farmington, MI | Subject: RE: Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon : Official Thread I'll be there in the early afternoon with my mom and kiddo, so we'll either linger or go fast (with wailing baby). I've done the expo before so I think I can manuver through the booths if I have to. And for wardrobe, I think my last two long runs have helped me settle on: tights, long sleeve tech shirt and zippered vest over top. I might also wear a baseball hat and throwaway gloves (the mini-stretchy ones). I'm not sure if I'll make the gathering or not but look for me anyway (lime green vest w/white sleeves and blue bball cap if I wear it). My bib says "Sushi", I think! |

Extreme Veteran 446 Mason | Subject: RE: Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon : Official Thread You start based on what pace you put on your registration. If you're starting at a slower pace than you want to run, I believe you'll have to catch your pace group. I signed up months ago and put 4:30 for my full time which is 10:30 miles. I'd like to think I can do it in 10:00 or just under but I think I will need to catch that pace group on my own. |

Then you will have a better time than all of them because they started sooner? |

Then you will have a better time than all of them because they started sooner? Nope, your time is your time. Attached to your BIB will be a disposable timing chip that will go on your shoe. This chip will start YOUR clock running as soon as you cross a mat at the start line and will stop YOUR clock when you cross a mat at the finish (and will also give you your 5K, 10K & under water mile split as well). You may finish way before or after someone right next to you at the finish depending on when they tripped the mat and which wave they started in. Don't worry about anyone but yourself. As I tell my kids each race, "be a racer of one". In essence, do the best you can with what you have and don't worry about what is going on around you. EDITED to ADD: Rereading your question, there is a chance you could be correct. Lets say the 8 MM pace group goes off in wave one and you start in wave 2, 10 or 15 minutes later and you catch the 8 MM pace group from the 1st wave (likely by running around 5 MM), then yes you are correct. The pace groups in your corral should come close to matching your seeding time submitted if done right. Edited by AeroBaldness 2009-10-15 11:07 AM |

If you finish with them after starting behind them you will have a time faster than they have. |

Extreme Veteran 594 Grosse Pointe Woods | Subject: RE: Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon : Official Thread This after party thingy looks like it has potential: http://www.freepmarathon.com/Assets/DetroitFreePress+Digital+Assets/pdf/documents/conquered.pdf It should be sunny & 50ish. Having not done a BT hook up yet, might this be a good chance to meet up with BT'ers? I've gotta wait for my wife and a few friends to finish the full so I'll be be hanging around. It'd sure be nice if a couple of free beers were part of the package like the Indy Mini & RnR Chicago! |

I'll actually be working at the expo from 11-3 on Saturday at the American Cancer Society booth. And on race day, we'll be cheering everyone on at mile 11.25-ish at the corner of Rosa Parks and Leverette (spirit station #11). I'll bring my camera to see if I can catch anyone.
