5 mile run on the treadmill this evening, slow pace but I got it out of the way and surprisingly now I can focus better and don't feel bored like I did earlier today.  Tomorrow, back to the pool again.

Hi all,
Happy new year to you. Did another 3 hour ride today, and a 90min run on Thursday. I'm going pretty well with my training I think. Focusing on swimming this month, as it is a MAJOR limiter for me. Keep up the good work.

Think long spine, head down like you're swimming downhill, and glide, pull, glide.  I was a terrible swimmer until last year and really didn't like the swim workouts ( I have had both of my rotator cuffs worked out and the first few workouts made me feel like there was no way I would be able to do the swim).  A friend of mine gave me the Total Immersion book and videos, and after I read/watched them, I found the drills that both fixed my posture and stroke technique.  I now get to the point where the swim has become my favorite workouts because I can do it without overstressing my shoulders.  My times are getting faster, but I will probably never be a speedy swimmer.  I can however maintain a good pace for the long-distance swims and I come out of the water in decent shape for the bike, so all is good.

Good luck with the swim training.....

I can commiserate with you here.  What makes it worse for me is my lack of enthusiasm for the discipline too.  I think what I dislike about swimming is the lack of being able to take in your environment.  With running and biking, I can enjoy my surroundings as I go.  But, with swimming, your head is down the majority of the time and your lucky to see your hands pass your face with each stroke.

I do agree with Lance.  Swimming is all technique.  Less is definately more; it is all about efficiency, not power.  Lately, as part of my workouts, I'll do a super easy distance set where I just try to feel the water, be long with a big glide, and create a path of least resistance.

One other thing that makes the swim workouts bearable is a product called the H2O audio interval.  It is a completely waterproof case that holds an ipod shuffle and straps to the back of your goggle strap.  At least now when I am staring at the black line on the bottom of a pool, I have tunes helping combat the monotony.

i found intervals to help break up the monotony of swimming laps. . that way, you don't have time to think about the back and forth, as you are more worried about which interval you are on, your pace, and how hard it is to go fast!

Glad to see everyone is already doing some pretty impressive workouts!  Great job finding the MOJO through the holidays!!  I have definitly been indulging a bit much in the holiday festivities. . prime rib, potatoes. . beer, beer, beer!  probably why I am sick now, too many late nights in the last 1.5 weeks.
I don't know that i will be doing the 1/2 in two weeks. with the sore knee (which feels much better now) and the cold. . i don't think it'd be much fun.

Anyone else racing in January?

Actually, when I was talking about interval, I was talking about a waterproof ipod shuffle holder and headphone system so you have music while swimming.  I also find doing drill work to help to break up the boredom.  I did the fist drill today for the first time, which really helps me focus on using hip rotation to propel myself, as well catching water with my whole forearm and gliding.

I really like mine too.  But, it broke after a couple of months.  First, one side went out, so I listened through one ear.  Then the other side crapped out on me.  I need to contact them and see if I can get a replacement.

I'm planning on doing a 13.1 trail race on January 30th.  I'm heading into it as strictly a training run to help me with significant elevation changes over greater distances.  Coarse is mainly fireroad with some single track and roughly 2,800 ft elevation gain.  Goal is to average out around 8 minute miles.

Let me know if you need contact info, I buy product from them for The Sports Authority.  I know that they have a 100% warranty program, so you should just be able to send it back to them and they will replace it.

I knew you were referring to the MP3 player.  I have never used one of those - but i could see them being helpful.  i have a hard enough time keeping track of my laps though, if i was jamming out, it would be even more tough!

Damn, I've been procrastinating on this, but I finally got around to doing my 30' cycling threshold test.  I started with a 5 minute warm up on the trainer to get my legs warm and my hr into Zone 2, then started my ride with the test.  I'm not looking forward to repeating this test.

Lance. I had shoulder surgery last feb. on torn labrum.....My hats off to you though for doing tri with rotator cuff surgeries. I hear they are worse than what I had done, and you did both!!!! Awesome

Mike I know what you mean about losing count in the pool. If I gota lap counter I think my times would go down!!

Cool-a waterproof ipod shuffle case. I'll have to check into that.

I totally disconnected this weekend from cyberspace and really didn't do much of anything.

Made it to cycling class this AM. And I think I've pretty much set out my races for the year/season. Trying a little bit of everything.

Bolder Boulder 10K

Loveland Sprint Tri

And a century ride in Sept (still can't decide which to do)

I'll probably throw in a 5K in the spring and an indoor tri if the gym does one.

nice job on the workouts lately!

I am going to skip out on the half marathon that I was planning for 1/16.  I am still pretty sick (nasty cough), and with the knee bugging me for a few weeks there, doing a hard 1/2 marathon isn't the best idea.  I will probably take this week pretty easy, and try to get back into running next week.  hopefully i will have the energy to workout tomorrow!

Good call on skipping the 1/2 marathon, I had the same thing happen (getting sick with H1N1) about 3-4 weeks before the Denver 1/2 and there was no way I would have finished it without severely paying the price.

I managed to get in an hour on the spin cycle at work at lunch....now I get to coach indoor soccer this evening and run another 45 minutes on the treadmill.....so I've got that going for me.

Wow, I'm so impressed with everyone going strong through the holidays.  I definitely did my fair share of slacking off, but on the positive side, I think I finally kicked the cold I'd been fighting off sporadically through the last month!  Now I have just under 2 weeks until I start HIM training... very daunting!!

I have a question for all of you now.  I always struggle with sore and tight muscles since I tend to skimp on stretching.  I've been getting continually better about it, but still don't quite do as much as I probably should.  What stretching routines do you all follow?

Christina - are you following a plan for the HIM?

I typically stretch after running the most - and i'll do the following:

touch toes w/one leg in front of the other (both legs)
stretch quads
stretch calfs (foot against wall)
stetch hamstrings

if it was a long run, then i'll do a set of stretches on the floor too.

after biking and swimming, i'll stretch sometimes, it more just depends how long the workout was.

I find stretching to be pretty dang helpful, and it just feels good!

I also stretch my lower back and hips crossing a bent leg over the top of the other.  I also have one that is meant to stretch the IT band, but it is hard to explain, so you'll need to look it up.  I can tell you that keeping the IT band limber will save you a lot of what would be apparent knee problems (know from experience).  In case you need to know, IT stands for ilio-tibial band.  I have had issues with it, and I guarantee you it feels just like you have torn something in your knee.

Hey all,
Well, I can't say I kept it strong during the holidays - I skimped out a pretty good amount.  I think it was probably for the best, though.  Trying to start myself up again now that things have settled back into the usual routine.  Had a very positive workout today.  I didn't exert myself very much in the workout, but I think it was just right.  Hopefully I can ease myself back into bigger volume after a little while.

As for stretching... I would go to a few yoga classes if I were you.  Yoga classes will teach you all sorts of ways to stretch out, and give you routines that will connect all the stretching in a logical, flowing fashion to really make the most use of your stretching.  It's tough to fit in yoga as a permanent element to a weekly routine, but going just a few times so that you learn the motions may help you learn something about stretching.  I know I did!

65 minutes on the trainer.
STRETCHING...I like to use my girlfirend p90x stretching video. They have a few in there that I've never seen before plus I can't do the rest of the videos..haha!!!
I generally only do a 5 minute cooldown and maybe light strech. But later in the day I'll get a good long session tha thits dam near everything. That IT band stretch is great and of course i am really working on the groin, hammies, and calves. Triceps and rear shoulders. back to.

I am using a training program, the 20-week one on this website.  Can't wait for it to start!

Thanks for the stretching tips so far.  Funny you should mention the IT band thing feeling like something is torn in your knee. I actually went to the doctor for that exact reason in September and was really relieved to find out it was just the IT band. Even though it was painful, definitely better than finding out something was ripped up in my knee. After that I got a foam roller, and that, along with stretching, really helps.

Been training for work on a normal schedule 8-5 this week, and trying to get my workouts. I became a pilot so I wouldn't have to work for a living, so when i am in a long training event I forget how hard it its. Some time coming off with the weekend so looking forward to the long run and ride on Saturday Sunday.
