it works from my blog - don't understand why they don't work from here

any html experts in the crowd?

Aw Bethie Love thanks so much ... well, let me cut and paste from your blog into mine and see if it works that way.

That does work, and the links work. So Manatees, if you go to Beth's log (click Log button under one of her posts), copy the Manatee table, go to your own log, click Edit near the top, and paste. Voila!

Yipee!  I am so happy it works!

Dineen - Props on making the commitment with the swim buddy! Also, will your bike fit in your living room? A lot of rollers and trainers only add a little bit of length, actually.

You guys were SO RIGHT about swim lessons! I met a girl from my university's swim team at the school pool this morning and had my first lesson -- the difference she made in an hour was AMAZING! We're meeting up again tomorrow morning, then the school pool is closed until after the new year. But she gave me some exercises to do sans pool, and I am really excited to get going!

Also, the swimsuit, goggles, and cap I bought at 8 PM last night all worked out, lol. (Thanks BT Best of the Best gear polls!)

Is it bad that I just spent an hour playing with my training log?

Resources for swim workouts:

i thought it might be helpful to mention a couple of resources that i know of for swim workouts

BT of course is a great resource - here are some links to beginner plans from BT
http://beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=755
http://beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=777
http://beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=801

i also really like swimplan.com - you register and then enter some basic information, reason for swimming, skill level, strokes, etc - you then have access to free swim programs - the site creates programs for you based on the information you provided

- i print them off and put them in a gallon size baggie to keep them dry at the pool - generally i do end up tweaking them some, but that's just me

oh, and the site is free

another resource is   Workouts in a Binder:  Swim workotus for Triathletes - Gale Bernhardt

it's a great book of workouts and it's waterproof so you can set it up right on the edge of the pool - i would say these workouts are geared toward a somewhat experienced swimmer for the most part - jmho

hope this is helpful

I love swimplan.  I printed off 5 or 6 plans and laminated them so I could take them to the pool with me.

I feel much better now   Two nights of good workouts.  I work till 11am today then that's me off till the 4th with the exception of one day next week that I am doing as a favour

Ah! Seems like the holidays have snuck right up on us here in Oregon and we're headed to Arizona for the holidays! Hopefully will be getting in a few runs in the desert with my sis in law while I'm there!
Had a early Christmas and scored a bike trainer and heart rate monitor which will DEFINITELY help with training! Still trying to figure out what it all does, etc. but am really happy with it! Any one else use a HRM to help out? I first heard/learned about how helpful they are from the book Triathlon's for Women by Sally Edwards. (Fantastic book!! btw!)
I love my bike trainer and am still convincing the hubby that my noisy workouts in the morning waking him up  will all pay off! haha
Hopefully I can be on here a little more while I'm on my mini vacation--sorry for being out of the loop--no internet at home makes for a difficult time getting on the internet!

Thanks for the tips about the swim workouts. I swim about once a week and find that I get pretty board with my workouts. The university pool i used to go to had laminated workouts that were fantastic. I'm thinking I'm going to be doing that too!

I love Triathlons for Women (have an autographed copy!) ... it's phenomenal reading for any beginning (or even continuing) triathlete, male female or other.

I've done HR training. I think it can be very useful. It's most useful when you have some benchmarks for establishing heart rate training zones. DO NOT use any age-related or even resting-heart-rate related formulas. They're nearly useless. (And swimming is done in terms of time trialing, not HR--most HRMs don't work well in the water and when they do the data aren't great anyways).

The best benchmarks are LT tests. However, they really can only be done when you're already quite fit. But there are other ways to get useful benchmark heart rates to start off with.

Note what your exertion is at different heart rates. If you're at a super-easy pace where you feel like you could run(walk/jog/etc.) forever, that's likely your Zone 1.

Note what range your heart rate is in when you're at a comfortable pace where you could hold a natural conversation. That's Zone 2.

Get a general idea of where the line is between when you're at that conversational" pace and when you would have to start taking breaths in between sentences. That is likely the limit between your Zone 2 and Zone 3.

If you're fairly new, or new-ish and building base (more on what that is later), pretty much all your training should be in Zone 2, with times at Zone 1.

With training, you will find that your heart rates get lower at each type of exertion ...

Now THAT is dedication!

I have super cool new running shoes (SHOCKED that I could find any that fit here in Indonesia, have a hard time finding any in the States) and I should use them today (Christmas here).

Yes, Merry Christmas and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all the lovely Manatees and our beloved stalkers.

Good morning everybody!

I'm off work this week (though I still have some things I need to do) and am sitting in my sunroom. The sun is still pretty low on the horizon and I just watched a flock of geese land in my neighbor's pond. It's quiet (except for the geese). I don't get to enjoy times like this in the morning very often (like most of you, I'm sure).

So my goals for the next 3 months are pretty simple; 1) Eat better and lose 5 lbs. each month, 2) Swim at least 3 times a week and improve my stroke and speed. I've already signed up for some swimming lessons so that's got me started with swimming. The eating better part is going to be harder. Think of all the things you shouldn't eat...yeah, that's my current diet.

Have a good week!

Hope everyone is making it through the holidays on track.  I missed too many days, but got back out there this morning, and was so glad that I did.  Had a nice run in my old neighborhood (it was cold!).  I have never, in my life, gone for a run or any sort of exercise out of my parents' front door.  Glad to have made this change in my life.

Hi Manatees!

I had a great holiday with my kids - they are on their way back to college as i write this - bittersweet as always when they leave

here's to a great week and a Happy New Year - 2009 has been an incredible year full of change for me, not an easy year, but an incredible year all the same

I'm looking forward to see what 2010 has to bring to

did my first official 'race' of the winter series - man oh man is that a hilly park!

had a great time

What a lovely description of your morning ...

Something you should definitely not eat: fresh termites with the wings pulled off. It's a delicacy here. Then again, the prospect of eating those might make weight loss easier

All the best with your goals! Do you have specific ways to address your eating (like, as mentioned before, substitutions)? Food plan, anything like that? Eating healthy = wonderful and challenging. Make it as easy as possible for yourself!
