1100 free in the pool at lunch in 25:08. Even after a rest day I felt sluggish and got bored really quick. Oh well. Planning on 4.5 mile run tonight.

Swam 1650 yards in 38:30, more or less in this order: 500 freestyle in 7:45, 3x50 catch up drill, 4x50s kick, 1x50 head high freestyle, 1x50 breast stroke, 1x50 butterfly, 3x50 freestyle sprint (fastest 50 @ 36 seconds), 500 freestyle in 8:30.

50s aren't as fast as late last year, but the 500s are more comfortable than they've been in the last year, with no stops necessary.

The air quality is improving.  I live in Utah-- and during the winter we have inversions occasionally-- the bad air gets trapped in the valleys and we wait for a storm to clear the air.  It isn't bad for most people, but with asthma, I can feel the bad air.
With that said, air is better and it is getting up to the 40's-- warm weather for January, so I think I am going outside to ride my bike today  It will be my first outdoor ride with clipless pedals. CAN'T WAIT!!!

Oh you poor thing!  That's what I had right after Christmas and it was not fun.  Ginger ale, white bread and some pedialyte got me through it.  Best of luck and feel better!

Easy 6 mile bike ride today-- it was going to be 12 but my ears were frozen and I couldn't feel my legs anymore.  It took a while to thaw, but riding with my new pedals was great!

Lanni-- FEEL BETTER SOON!!!  I had a similar bug before Christmas.  Not being able to stomach sweets help with the caloric intake

Congrats on a new sponsor!!!!!

Planning on either 6 mile run during kids nap time or 2 hour spin and a 6 mile run after kids bed time. Not sure yet.

Did the longest run I have done since 2008 Philly Marathon. 6 miles in 46:44. Felt pretty good. I was very happy about this one.

Good run Scott!

Today I rode for an hour at the gym, hit 14 miles (according to the machine) in 50 minutes, which is a new record if accurate.

Then run/walked for 25 minutes.

Did 2 hour self guided spin. 20 aero, 20 climb, 20 aero, 15 climb. 15 aero, 15 climb, 15 aero. 2 bottles cytomax and 2 gu packets. Should have brought a bottle of infinit instead of one of the cytomax. Oh well. Lesson learned

Great ride!

For the newbies to sophisticated supplementation.  How do you know you should have switched an infinit for a cytomax?  What did you experience and how would the switch help?

Thanks!

5 minute walk, 10x5:1 run:walk, 5 minute walk.

After the five minute walk, the 5k split was 29:15.  10k was 1:00:36.

Weather was coolish, about 50 degrees.  5k split was more than 3 minutes slower than best time, but this is only 3rd run in about 8 weeks, and I'm about 10 pounds heavier!  Run was reasonably comfortable.  How long will it take to get back to 26 minute 5K?  Could slower pace also be related to longish bike/run yesterday?

On the plus side, this is the first time I've hit 10k on a primarily run pace!  I could've kept going...  but my goal was an hour and I know at this length of time I've experienced knee issues the next couple of days, so don't want to go too far too fast.

Equipment question:  I wanna buy a road bike and I think I've decided on the Felt Z85 http://www.feltbicycles.com/USA/2010-Product-Catalog/Road/Z-Series/... Primarily decision is based on purchasing at LBS (jackandadams.com) that specializes in triathlon, it's a package (you can read more about the package on the jackandadams homepage) with a bunch of basic tri equipment including clipless pedals, and the aluminum bike comes with Shimano 105 drivetrain (total package $1438 plus tax).  Is it worth spending another $440 plus tax for the next in line Z6 http://www.feltbicycles.com/USA/2010-Product-Catalog/Road/Z-Series/... which is carbon, one pound lighter, but the lesser Tiagra drivetrain?  Am I reading these specs right?

Until the end of today I could have purchased a carbon Tommaso with 105 drivetrain online (rscycle.com) for about the same price as the Z85, but I was less enthusiastic about the warranty essentially requiring work by the Tomasso dealer (shipping costs borne by me), and warranty replacement not committing faster turn-around than 60-90 days.

Thoughts?

A number of thoughts, in no particular order

a 1 lb difference is easily made up for in body weight vs. bike weight

How important is carbon vs. aluminum? (when I bought my bike guy advised spend the extra for all carbon so I didn't end up buying 2 bikes in 3 years. My bike is almost 4 years old and I'm still very happy with it)

Yes it is Tiagra drivetrain vs 105, but I don't think there is THAT much difference between the 2. You can upgrade parts a lot easier than bike.

I prefer purchase at LBS vs online, but if you have a good relationship with LBS they will help you

Have you considered buying last years model? I bought my bike in March, all the "new" models were out, I bought the prior year at a huge discount from LBS. (they really don't make money on bikes, it's parts and labor for the profit)

If you can swing the extra 440+tax I'd go for carbon, but that is me

Remind me again how long you've been doing tri's and what you're riding now.

Dylan my take is drivetrain is more important than the carbon in this case. Yes less fatigue with the carbon, but you will be needing to upgrade the drivetrain really quickly.  You may want to look at sunrisetri.com. THey got a bunch of Felts on sale.

In response to the infint, i just felt slightly sluggish at then end and I feel I need to practice with that stuff anyway to make sure it wont make me puke.

I have considered last year's model, but not too many left in my very common size and in my price range.

I've never done a tri (yet) and am currently riding my mountain bike and the stationary bikes at the gym.  Want to get a road bike as the outdoor riding season warms up.

I could get the Z5 for still $320 more, which would be carbon and 105, more than doubling the base package price.  Not sure I'm in for more than $2k yet...

Also, I'm not in love with Felt...  It's what the LBS sells in the package, and I've heard good things...

Did I mention I did upper body resistance training yesterday also?  Going to begin some sort of run/bike lower body training if appropriate too.  Recommendations?

Finally, went to the gym again today and spun for an hour with a short walk/run/walk afterward.  Practiced a more circular spin for the first time today, pulling up as well as pushing down.  Saw more than 10% increase in RPM's from the extra effort.  Excited about the extra hp!

STOP RIGHT THERE!!!!! DO NOT BUY THE BIKE!!!!! Have I made my point?

You should be totally in LOVE with your bike your bike when you buy it, especially if you are buying it new and spending that kind of money. You have plenty of time to shop and look around.

You need to go to a few different bike shops (it's not cheating) and ride some different bikes and see what kind of deals they are offering.

Would you buy a house you didn't love because your sister was selling it? I hope not. Spend the time, do some research and some shopping before purchasing!

I would definintely shop around as well.  In addition to considering your bike, I visited a few shops to get a sense of who they were and how they treated people along with their bikes and prices.  Even though it is a bit of a drive, I ended up getting my bike at Sunrise Tri because they seemed like the best mix of everyting for me.  Good luck with your search!

It's been a frustrating few days for me but I think I am getting a handle on my knee pain and the tightness in my legs that is causing it.  I've never been much of a foam roller guy but it has really been helping so I guess I just need to make it part of my routine for a near future.

Good morning- I have rejoined the world of the exercising.  Head and chest cold this weekend.  Today looks like a swim/bike brick while the kids are at school.
