ironannekidd - 2010-04-08 2:09 PM So I just signed up for the Marine Corps Marathon

It will be my first

My knees already hurt

Ann, I've been looking at MCM as an option since NYC rejected me the Ba$tard$.  Decided I'd rather run with some nice marine pace booty vs a bunch of goofy New Yorkers.  (Can you tell I'm still bitter?)

nichip - 2010-04-08 12:59 PM Hi All,

I am Nichi.  New to triathlons in the last year.  My roommate from college encouraged me to do one along with another close friend from my highschool days.  Facebook is wonderful for connecting!  Anyway, they both said-yeah you can do it in 8 weeks.  I started the couch 2 5K in April 2009 and got the itch to do the triathlons at the end of June.  Did my first 5K on August 8th and my first tri on August 23rd.  It was awesome.  Absolutely loved it!

Family- married to my husband Troy for 21 years.  Mom to Tyler,14,Cassidy 11, Tory 6 and Cole 3.

Unfortunately, I have some kind of knee? injury that has kept me from running for 3 weeks.  I am getting crabby!  basically, I wish I could find out what is wrong.  Going to Doctor tomorrow.  He wants to give me a cortisone shot.  Anyone ever had one?  Is this a good idea? I am unable to run without limping and have only been able to run 1 mile since the 20th of March.

After running all winter and having a wonderful time doing the Crappy Winter Weather Challenge-earning over 15,000 points I might add) , it is extremely difficult to have the nice spring weather and not be able to run!  Okay, I will let you know what happens.  Any suggestions?

Yes, I do have a foam roller and no, I don't think it is IT band(massage therapist and chiropractor-both said no)

Today is a beautiful day-glad to be a goulie mentee!
Nichi

Welcome

Hard to say about the knee injury, but I feel your pain, literally. Do you have a good pair of well fitting running shoes? Sometimes it is as simple as the shoes.

Haven't heard about the cortizone shots though. I had them in my foot once upon a time. They helped with plantar fasciitis then. Good luck. Hope you can be running injury free soon.

Nichi, do let us know what the doctor says.  Are you seeing your primary care doc or someone that practices sports medicine?  I have long running knee issues, all of which are related to strength/flexibility issues.  Nothing inherently wrong with the knee, but the muscles and tendons in the thigh/glutes/hammies create havoc with my patella.

Good luck.  The only other advice is that when injury takes one activity away from you, it's a great time to focus on something else.  Maybe now is a great opportunity to become a swimming machine.

the good news is i did my first half marathon on march20th...even got a 2nd place medal and chocolate roses from my six year old. bad news is i was hobbling the week before and didnt realize or maybe it was denial. i had a 12.5 mile run on saturday before the race which i was planning to run as a training run. i believe the knee pain which was on the outside, inside and back of knee was caused by the limping or hobbling when i run. my long run was 5 miles in november i have followed a conservative plan for increasing my mileage everything was fine until the monday or tuesday before the 20th. ipronate and was wearing asics gel2140 they had about 275 miles on them. any iideas as to what is causing my problem? thanks, nichi

When you bought your shoes, did you get them from a good running store? I agree with Ann that your shoes could be causing you issues. Also, smart move with the conservative increases in mileage. That was my mistake last year!

Kim - any other thoughts about the outside/inside/back of knee pain Nichi is having?

This sounds A LOT like what I deal with.  In my case it is lateral knee pain (outside of knee).  Medial (inside of the knee) pain is often related to meniscus tears, which I've had years back. That said, Nichi, your situation could be completely different.  Definitely see your doctor.  The pain behind the knee may simply be strained hamstrings from your mileage and/or hobbling.

I have patello-femoral syndrome, which is caused by quads  being too tight and not strong enough to stabilize the knee. My hamstrings are also tight and need strength work.  All compounded by the fact that I'm tall and female.  Women tend to have more knee issues than men due to what is called a Q angle.   Because women have a wider pelvis than most men, our femurs tend to come into the knee joint at a greater angle than men's do.  For me the pain tends to appear on longer runs, when most likely form suffers.

Good luck and let us know what the doctor says.

When do the "challenges" start???  Or have they already, and I missed it???
I just swam a mile at lunch without stoping and without my HR getting above 130.  Seems like yesterday I couldn't do 50 yrds strait.  Already can't wait to swim again!  Wish I could get this motivated about running.

...how ironic to come back from phys therapy & see all the posts about knee pain!

I've had cortisone shots in various body parts - love em when they're needed; they hurt like hell, but get to the inflammation and really help. I've been religious about my PT since my surgeries, and that's been great - knees still hurt, but also why I'm taking the running ramp up so slow....

..as for y'all heading to DC for the MCM, come on over after the race & I'll mix you up some post-run margaritas.....and whatever flavor oreos float your boat.....!

Challenges generally start the beginning of the month. Anyone can suggest a challenge. There is a FAQ sticky in the Challenge thread, too.

Good job on the swimming. Breakthroughs are always nice.

Hey Ryan, way to go on the mile swim! As for the challenges they usually start on the 1st of every month but most teams I've been a part of have no problem taking late comers as long as all your stuff so far this month is in your logs. I say go for it and have a blast!

Went to school at Iowa State, but grew up in Minnesota and currently reside in San Diego. The "iowagander" handle comes from my wife. When it was allergy season there my nose was a perpetual faucet and when I sneezed she said I sounded like a goose/gander. That was right about the time I made my yahoo email account, so I went with iowagander and it stuck.

Being that it's Halloween we might be able to get the Oreos with the orange in them. I wish they'd make them in a double stuff.
