se7930 - 2010-09-13 1:56 PM 33 days and counting until my first HIM. I am still following the beginner HIM plan from BT with just a few twists and tweaks here and there on the bike and run volume. Over the last 2-3 weeks, I have really started to see a culmination to all the work at the beginning of the plan and I can tell the fitness and endurance levels are increasing. This past weekend showed some really good signs... Long ride of almost 3 hours yielded my first average over 18MPH for a long ride. And, I felt really fresh afterwards, my legs weren't jello, and I definitely could have run right off the bike. The next day (Sunday) I went out for my long run and did 14 miles, which was my longest distance run to date. I finished the run strong and could have continued, but not wanting to push it, I decided to err on the side of caution and stop at 14 miles !!! Swimming is coming along well;I borrowed a friends kayak and am doing OWS once a week with the wife supporting me from the kayak and I am consistently doing swims beyond HIM distance without issue.

I have a recovery week this week, then 2 weeks of training before I start to taper and, at this point, am more concerned about injury between now and race day than not being ready physically or mentally. I wish the race was THIS weekend and not 30 days away!!! I may go bonkers before I get to the starting line .. the anticipation is really starting to build!

Your training and improvement are very inspiring! Thank you for sharing.

ratherbeswimming - 2010-09-13 2:29 PM Question about starting late... I'll only have 18 wks to do the 20 wk program.

The plan for my May 15 race should start Dec 26. Well, this is the day I'll be summiting Kilimanjaro! I come back on the 1st, and then I'm running the Ragnar Relay through the FL Keys. (Rough life, right?) So, my run volume will be there, but minimal biking and probably no swimming.

My Oly tri is November 14th, and after that, I'll be focusing on running for Ragnar, but probably still slipping a bike and swim in weekly.

Should I pick up at week 18 instead of week 20?  Should I go easy on the run for the first week back to training?

Absolutely go easy on the running! I would go ahead and take the whole week off from running and do extra swimming and a little extra biking instead. As long as you are comfortable with the swim and bike volume in Week 18, it's totally fine to start there. And yes, I am jealous.

I'm posting to keep honest too.
I spent a week on the side lines due to a cold I picked up during my first week of swim teaching school kids. I even lost my voice for the first time ever! And it didn't even go throught the sexy husky stage...just a squeeking honking sound. Niiice.
I'm back at it again but I missed a couple of long sessions. The run is not an issue as this is my "thing" and I can make the swim with minimal training but the bike is my very real weakness!
I was always under the dissillusion that cos I could run  forever and a day that I would just jump on the bike and it would all come together. It could almost be disheartening to be so crap on the bike after being used to being competent in the other two sports...but I wont let it. I'll just have to keep plugging away.
So I'm also going to skew the training program to be more bike heavy.
I hope every one is enjoying their journey...that's my goal now. And to smile my way through the race.

Ok, I just did my first Oly last weekend after 3 sprints throughout the year.

I've set a goal of doing a 1/2 IM in 2011! I think I'm going to do one in June. I still need to check the course and make sure it'll be a good 'first' one for me.

I've also set a goal of running a marathon next March. I still have a couple of 1/2 marathons still to do this year and the running has been going well. I'm not very fast but I'm feeling stronger when I run which I like

So for this 'off' season from tri's, this is my plan so far.....I'm following a training program to get me to the marathon and I swim 3 (if I get myself out of bed, sometimes it's 2) days a week with a masters group. I was planning to bike a couple short rides during the week and maybe a longer ride on the weekends. Does that sound about right? I need to get stronger on the bike but I'm not sure how much to do during the off season and I don't want to overdo it and not have the energy to put into the run training. I've been riding a hybrid bike and plan to get a road bike soon so I'll have to get used to that as well.

Any  thoughts?
Thanks,
Johanne

No advice here. But it's nice to have someone who's not a spring chicken...assuming that's your age you're talking about. Welcome.

I'm so glad you're enjoying the healthy lifestyle. I'll be turning 49 soon...heading for  50 and really enjoy being able to do the things that I do. Tho sometimes my body thinks I'm nuts, I think. At least my husband does.

I'm a few months into 50 and yes, it's closer to 30 then it used to be! A 62 year old women cruised by me at my race this weekend. I had to do a double take. She looked great! Lots of inspiration at races

We haven't finalized anything yet but I think Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns. We'l take 2 weeks so I don't think we'll have time for much more than that. Maybe we should look for a race!

Hi Johanne. I think your plan sounds about right. Two times in Masters in enough over the winter, especially if your bike is more of a limiter than your swim. If you look farther up on this thread, someone recommends Jorge's winter cycling plan. That might be a great option for you over the winter. Otherwise, a 3X a week plan will work just fine - 2 shorter, higher intensity, tempo, or technique rides and one long slow ride on the weekend.

Just wanted to give an update. I completed the Rev3 Cedar Point HIM this weekend. I thought the Beginner plan had me prepared for my first HIM. I'm taking 3 days off and then getting back at it. I really like this distance for both training and racing. Lots of improving to do but I'm excited about it.

I'm also close to the big 50, turning 45 next month. Wish I would have done this 10 years ago!!

Stick with the plan and get your workouts in and you will be ready.

I am about a month and a half out from my first HIM.  Been using the BT plan.  Getting reinvigorated this week after 2-3 weeks of lower-than-should-have volume.  Work has been crazy with the roll-out of a big project and my mind as well as my body is fatigued.  Several days of rain, including flooding the run trail and my gym didn't help.  Plus flat tires the last three times I rode (finaly found the guilty hole in the rim tape).  I was definitely feeling a dip in my enthusiasm for training.
I did my first Oly last week.  It took several days to recover.  I was happy with my times for my first, but instead of giving me more confidence, I ended it thinking, "how am I going to do that much a second time?"
But I met a friend who is also training for the same HIM for a bike and run tonight and am feeling like I am ready to throw myself back into it.
Of course, not being up at 3am unable to sleep doesn't help the fatigue...
Alas, just needing to post to get my head back in the game.
Thanks,
ELlen

Ellen, we all go through this, I promise! And we ALL think at one time or another "how am I going to do a HIM when that Oly was SO tough!". It's all 100% normal.
It SHOULD take a couple of days to recover from an Oly. People underestimate how tough it is on your body to race all out for that distance. Think about it this way: the Oly is really the longest distance you race as fast as you can. After that, you have to slow down and pace yourself to survive. In that sense, an Oly is tough, just like a 10K.
CONGRATS on finishing your first Oly. I am happy to hear you are feeling motivated again. Just remember, we all have low times and high times. What makes you a successful triathlete is accepting the lows and the highs and moving through them - NOT giving up because you aren't Superman.

Ellen,
I did my first HIM last weekend and my first Olympic about 4 weeks before.  I felt the same way, but I was absolutely fine last weekend - I had all the conditioning and strength I needed to finish strong.  You just have to trust your training and your training plan.  It's really hard during the taper to cut back when you think you haven't trained enough, but you have to cut back or you won't have the energy come race day.  But you put in the necessary work.  It's going to be great!

I switched from the Beginner 1/2 plan to the Olympic-to-HIM Bridge plan. I'm a little befuddled as to what to do about the Strength minutes/workouts ... since I barely squeeze in biking and running (and almost never swim) what I might do is add some cycling (hills, trails, strength-y-type cycling) for it (not as extensive or long as strength training) ... maybe a walk with my dog on running days.
