Michelle - I have a Mac laptop and a PC.  I have to go to my PC to add pictures, don't know how to on the Mac.

David - I say stay on the Oly Plan and work in the Sprint.  You are comfortable in the water so I don't see any obstacles for you.

Greg - Sometimes the dreadmill is the only option, we can't all run where david does   What part of your calf was injured?  Anything down in the Achilles area takes forever to heel.  You are smart for taking it slow.

Mel- You are busy!  I say spin classes are a great option.  They are great for increasing your cadence and you still get your cardio time.  Working in some MT bike will increase your power too.  Get what you can in and take it easy on that shoulder.

Hope everyone has a Happy New Year!!  I am working the Vegas Strip so let the crazy begin!

cbarnes1 - 2010-12-29 6:38 AM Jeff - good luck on finding the right plan.  There are so many out there but worth the search if one fits.

I want a home gym and/or office

Trying something new this year. To make a long story. I will go with a new plan. I raced with some people from the Chico Tri Club and noticed they were really organized (so to speak..for an amateur club) and serious racers. Later, at a festival I was speaking to a group of them over some beer and a blackberry pie (Blackberry Fiesival, it happens every year the same time as the Tin Man in Mt Shasta) and they turned me on to their club. Chico is too far away for me to train with them but their athletic director Sean Molina (have you heard of him? Raced Scott and Tinsley a long time ago in what started Kona World Ironman) puts up a 12 week training plan on their site and I thought I would try it. Right now I have created my own maintenence plan and will do that for 8 weeks. I think it will be a good fit though. I am now sort of getting the hang of making my plans. Essential for continuing endurance sports.

cbarnes1 - 2010-12-29 8:32 PM Jeff - Ya that's the one.  It is a llittle wider than a normal saddle and have heard of people having to get used to that.  It is designed for your sit bones.  I was having so many problems with my stock Felt saddle that it was instantly better for me.  I road the ironman in tri shorts and had zero pain.  I am a believer.

That'll do it for me. I should have ordered one for xmas. Now I'll have to fork out the cash myself. I am sure it will be worth it. I have been looking at saddles like those for awhile.

I picked up a second one Tuesday, 2.0 Time Trial Special.  Haven't tried it out yet, waiting for the next cold snap.

Adamo's are the best saddles out there. I picked one up this summer off of the BT used equipment pages.  I have the Century model, slightly wider and more padding.

The biggest complaint I've heard is it rubs one leg more than the other.  You have to not only get the height and tilt correct, but you also have to get the rotation correct as well.  The Adamo site has a pretty good explanation of how their saddles differ from standard ones.

Happy New Year everyone!  I am just getting moving and have an easy run on tap later, long run tomorrow.  I hope to get back in the water this week too.

Sheila and Daneen - not sure where you swim but the Heritage Park pool at Race Track and Burkholder is awesome!  It is so clean and I have never had to share a lane.  The gym pool I used to swim at is just plain gross.  It is still chilly for OWS still but those are very important later.

So what is your big workout for this week?  This is the workout where you start practicing race nutrition and routine.  Try different meals, clothing and equipment because race day is not the time for anything new!!!

I spent today cleaning up the workshop at the high school where I teach Materials & Processes I (metal & wood shop).  When I got home, I decided not to shower and just go for my scheduled run.  When I returned, 8.75 miles later, the first words from my dear wife were, "you look like hell."  Gee thanks, love you too.  But, in her defense, she did stay up until 12:30 waiting for me to come back.

2 hour run on Sunday, will be using Heed in my 2 - 10 oz. bottles and a Hammer Gel or two in the belt pocket.  That is my regular set up.  Tonight I tried water and a PowerBar gel, wasn't really happy with that combination.

Awesome picture Chet!
Great to see you are able to hook up and do some training together.

I finally moved (well mostly) into my home office today, another load or two and I'm done and can get back to my normal routine - as best I can with the kids home from school.

Rode with one of my clients today - very, very windy but I am getting stronger.

Great pics Chet, I looked up Henderson on Google, very interesting landscape, how hot does it get in Summer?
Had day off today, got a beginners surfboard on the weekend and all 3 kids have learned to surf!!!
Amazing how they pick things up so quickly compared to adults...

I'm in a base period in my training so lots of easy workouts to look forward to Smile, did a patrol at the beach yesterday and a relaxed ocean swim (just under 1200m), felt fine, no fatigue after so feel the swimming is still ok despite Christmas.
Need to get my routines established, have just started new job ( very close to beach and later start so potentially more training opportunities!)

Have a great week,
Dave

Chris-  I use Infinit on the bike with water and Gu and Gatorade on the run.  It is funny how your body responds to different nutrition.  During the ironman I started drinking Coke because it just sounded good at the time and it was fantastic.  Couldn't drink it during a normal workout though.

Michele - those windy days are tough on the bike.  I would rather run in the wind than ride.

David - They have a race in July at that lake in the picture that has been in the 120's.  They say it is a dry heat though

So when you start to hurt late in a race, what keeps you going?

I hear the term HTFU a lot but am not a believer.  Negative thoughts during a race will slow you down and make you quit.

Everyone is different but here a couple tricks to try to keep negative thoughts out of your head: 1)  thank the volunteers!  Sounds simple but these people are out handing you water 10 miles in the middle of nowhere.  They should motivate you to keep going.  2)  Take on nutrition when the thoughts start.  The first time you say to yourself "what am I doing out here?" take a gel.  It will give you a little pick up.  3)  have a mantra.  "Suffer now and forever live as an Ironman".  That went along way for me.  What ever motivates you; family, quotes, goals, etc.  Find it when your suffering.  4)  tuck in behind someone.  You can't do it on the bike but you can on the swim and run.  It will help you pace and get you back on track. When you recover and pass the person, make sure to thank them

"Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional!"
