big thing with Hammer Perpetuem is keeping it cold. I wrapped a second bottle in ice packs and wet towels in my Special needs bag for the bike. Being able to grab that and take a nice big cold swig was perfect!

But you must also remember that you won't be able to live off the course which created a bit of stress in case something was lost/went wrong.

After calculating the Christmas expenditures, I pulled the trigger on IMLou 2012 this morning. It'll be my first and I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Just signed up a few days ago...very excited.  This will be my 2nd 140.6 distance.  My first was ChesapeakeMan 2008 and I totally loved it.

A few questions for you IMLou veterans....

1) Swim start:   are there shuttles to take you down to the swim start area?  If not do folks just walk it from their hotels?   If you're staying near the finishing line area that seems like a long walk.

2) Any recommendations for accomadations?

3) is the finish line area on 4th street between W Market and W Jefferson?

1) There are no shuttles.  Once you drop off your special needs bags / check on your bike, etc, you have to make the 3/4 mile walk to the swim start.  Its not that bad as you can chat with other athletes.  You can drop off your special needs bags on Saturday and get in line that much sooner, but it is up to you.  This was the first year where you were not allowed to have someone get in line super early to hold your place in line while you slept in or took care of your bike.  Your family can be with you before the race but they have to be outside of the line.  They will have someone going down the line every so often making sure that who ever is in line has their Ironman wristband on.  If you have a friend or family member in line with you, then supposedly you will be forced to go to the end of the line.  Not sure if anyone had to do that this year or not.

2) We stayed at the Galt House this year and have reservations there for next year.  It is just a few minutes walk to the swim exit and also the finish line.  Excellent place to stay in my opinion. The only downside is getting an elevator the next morning as everyone tries to take their bike down to their cars.

3) I'm not sure about those two streets.  I know we cross over Muhammed Ali Blvd and go into the chute.  If you go to the Ironman Louiville website and look at the map for the run portion of the race, if you click on the pdf you'll be able to zoom in on the map.

Regarding the questions above.  I have done IM Louisville twice and stayed at the Hampton Inn Downtown Louisville.  It probably cost more but I liked it because of the Continental breakfast for the family, it is a little closer to transitions, the start and practice swim.  I also like to be a little farther from the main IM hotel so I am away from the hectic issues.  Also do not believe anything you hear about the swim.  It is a good swim, I am sure others might disagree but I have done many swim events and this is not as bad as the rumors say!!  I have done Wisconsin and Arizona and IM Louisville is my favorite swim. Reason being no mass, beat each other up start.  Just jump off the dock weave your way past people and swim at your own pace.  There was a small mud/sand bar just before the turn around a couple of years ago but I did not see any walking through the water in 2011.   I think in my two IML swims I have been  hit maybe three times.  Also don't stress about the start, get to transition when it opens at 5:00 (?) check your stuff and head up to the swim start, you will have plenty of time to drop your gear off get marked and get in line.  If you are at the end of the line you will be swimming by 7:30, just relax in line.  I have had some personal questions of what it might be like to wait for the start in the rain, but that is it.  So perhaps take an umbrella.  My double top secret, secret is that there is a little known porta john down by the rowing clubs building that has never had a line until later in the morning. Don't let any stinky polluted water stories get to you.  It looks much worse then it is.  It compares to any river in any state that passes through industry and as lots of run-off into it.  Granted not as clean as Wisconsin’s swim but it appears to be equal to Tempe Town Lake in appearance to me.  Bike is less hilly then Wisconsin but a couple of similar type hills as you drop into the valley a couple of times. Be cautious on the "leg" portion downhill very fast and lots of bike traffic in both directions.   Run is a little strange you pass through a couple of interesting parts of town.   But, very old areas with lots of history as well. You also get the sewer smell of any big city run.  Great finish area.  I am signed up for Wisconsin this year but I still have a possible IML IMW double on my mind if my body does not fall apart.  GOOD LUCK, I will be back for sure in 2103!! Oh yes, I also felt very safe walking around downtown

1.  As has been stated before, there are no shuttles, but the walk is really not bad at all.

2.  The Galt House (host hotel) is about 1/2 way between transition and finish line.  It is a nice hotel, just a little busy for my taste with the expo, athlete check in, etc.  I stayed at the Hyatt which is very close to the finish line (I could see the finish line from my room window).  The downtown Marriott is in the same area as the Hyatt.  Some people like to save money by staying across the river in Indiana (Jeffersonville?).

3.  Not totally sure, but the area sounds correct for the finish line.  Just check the maps on the website to be sure.

Good Luck!

Alan

I signed up a couple of weeks ago. It is my first IM. I had a hip replacement in 2009 and did my first Tri in May this year and then did two HIMs! I figured I might as well go the distance. Quite a few people from my area have done this race and love it. Very much looking forward to it.

I like the fact that Louisville entry is still open.  I wonder when it will close?  I am looking forward to 2013 and not feeling pressured to have to sign up a year in advance,,,,.

You all have a great time there in 2012 and hope to see some of you there in 2013.

We are planning 7 trainings in Louisville leading up to Ironman Louisville on August 26, 2012 beginning in May.  Some of these will involve OW swims in the Ohio River....all will involve biking the IMKY bike course and several of the dates (weekends) will incorporate a Sunday morning run (8am) of most of the IMKY run course.  To find out dates and more info join our IM Louisville group at http://iamtri.com/group/ironman-louisville-2012  We usually have 75-125 for our group trainings so triathletes of all levels welcomed!

If you have questions please email me at [email protected]

I HIGHLY recommend these training days to ANYONE that can attend.  They are very, very well run and make an amazing difference come race day.  I am planning to attend several again this year, this time en route to IMLP (thats just a little too far of a drive for me....lol).  These guys do a great job!

Anyone out there have a garmin file of the IMLOU bike course they'd be willing to share?   I want to load it to a tacx trainer and pre-ride the course that way.

If you have it just PM me and I can respond with an email address.  Thanks!
