Well I'm all caught up on post, knocked out a 10 mile ride, and now it's time, Go Pat's! I'm about to make a big pot of Shrimp Étouffée w/ rice, and yummy garlic bread. I will then have a few Dos Equis with limes and salt . Have a safe and good Super Bowl night. Trash talk during the game is allowed

Super what night? Ah, you meant a soup bowl, I understand. You are hungry after all those miles of course. Must be some american tradition. Just because I live in Europe doesn't mean I don't get it ;-)

Just kidding, GO SEAGULLS!

Hello,

I would like to join this group. What do I need to do besides write you here? Is there a monthly cost for mentoring?

Of course there is no charge and welcome to the Turtles. Just tell everyone about yourself and goals. Understand though I'm not a trainer or coach, I'm a helper and motivator so to speak. Again Welcome

Hi

I'm a total novice, but pretty excited to feel finally ready to embark on this journey...I've decided that my first race will be a Sprint Tri, and I'm giving myself plenty of time to train. 20 weeks, actually. My only goal with regards to the race is to complete it. Regarding my training, I hope to stay consistent, and simply stick with it. I'll be training in a gym mostly. When the weather improves, I'm going to buy a bike. I have an ancient road bike which would probably do the trick, but I know I could find one that's lighter weight. I'm excited to see how this all goes, and I'm thrilled to have found this group. For all you veterans, I have a question: How much strength training should I do? Is there a strategy for what days to add this in? Im doing a 20 week balanced program which gives me 2 days off each week. Some days are shorter, some longer. Any suggestions on this would be most helpful! Thanks.

I am signed up to do the BSU Sprint Tri on April 18th (Ball State University in Indiana) anyone else out there by any chance doing this?

Todd it says that the bike is "European Style" I'm not quite sure what that means? Do you know?

Not positive but a lot of what I found indicates a cold weather try and cross country. The only other thing I can think is a lot of European bike routes have a bunch of turns in and around the towns. Just giveum a call and ask but I think it's pretty much a normal bike course they're making sound fancy.

Something amazing happened yesterday! I was running on the treadmill. I hate running. I didn't even want to go to the gym but I have slacked off and had dinner plans for 3 nights straight so I went. I had no plan for it. I put on my music and started. About 15 minutes in I thought about how much I hate running and how hard a triathlon is going to be for me. I decided to run to 20 minutes. Then stretch, thinking 'there is plenty of time for me to improve my running'. At 20 minutes I hadn't even gone 2 miles. So I decided to keep going until 2 miles, thinking about logging in my run on this site. At 2 miles an awesome song came on my playlist. So I decided to run until the song was over but halfway through I accidentally restarted the song. So I kept running. THEN at the end, another great song came on! So I kept running, surprised at my attitude! At the end of that song a slow song came on so I skipped ahead in my shuffle until another great song came on and I ended up running 3 miles! Whoop Whoop!

I need to improve my 'workout' playlist! (the song I first got inspired to was Diana Ross- I'm coming out. Then the next was Bare Naked Ladies- One week. And yes, I know how random my music selection is). Thinking I need to add Uptown Funk

So I ask you, my virtual friends, what songs motivate you to keep going?

That is awesome! It is rare that I'll ever willingly extend my run beyond my original plan but when I do it usually feels fantastic. Of the three...I think I like running the least? (At least in the beginning when I'm still trying to get my legs up to snuff.) There is no possible way any of that would be possible (especially indoors) without a playlist that really speaks to me.

So here are my faves from my running playlist (in order of motivating/perfect beat for my turtle pace)
1. My Body - Young the Giant
2. Mr. Saxobeat - Alexandra Stan
3. Heart is a Beating Drum - The Kills
4. Promises - Nero
5. Run This Town - JayZ/Rhianna
6. Titanium - David Guetta/Sia
7. Happy - Pharrell
8. Boom Clap - Charli XCX
Slow/Cool down faves: Come Over - Estelle and I Need - Maverick Sabre

Listening to the same 10-15 songs three times a week makes them stale pretty quickly...so I'm always on the lookout for more music.

O.k. so here a tip in reference to running shoes. We already talked about the diffierent shoes that you need to consider based off your running style once you know what it is or have someone tell you. So now you know you're an overpronator who needs a stability shoe (or whatever it may be) and you try on a 9 1/2 because that is what you always buy and it fits. When this happens look at the sales person and ask them to go get you a size 10. Foot swell and extra room in the toe box area is not something you've ever had to worry about when buying shoes for every day use, but it is when you are using them in this sport and running distance. Naturally try on that 10, but while you won't notice much of a difference immediately, you will in the long term.

Inspires are a way for me and every one in this group to encourage, motivate, and congratulate each other. In order to Inspire someone you: Click on their User Name, then Click on Go to Training Log, Click on Inspire Me (across from date), type in your message, and then Click Post Comment. Now, and this is very important, when you get an Inspire and you click on it in order to read it, don't just type in a response and click post comment. If you want to respond to the person's Inspire you have to hit Reply, then type in your message and submit. If you don't do it this way it will just post in your training log right below the inspire you got and the other person never receives it.

*******O.K., now you know how to inspire and respond so now I want you to use that and help me at the same time. I will be sending everyone an Inspire for you to see it and respond. I would like a response to the effect that you are still a Turtle (can be as simple as Still In). I am trying to get a head count to see if we should close the group or stay open for a few more. I know from no activity and no response to messages and such that some have already disappeared and haven't even logged into BT since their first post asking to join. (Like I said before it happens every time)********

Friends: In order to add people to your friends: Click on their User Name, then Click on Add to Friends. By doing this for everyone in the group you will be able to click on Friends under the Community Tab (Under Forum) and will be able to have everyone in one page to view their logs and Inspire them. I will also make up a list once we close of everyone's User Name and Real Name.

A friend who is also attending the same triathlon as me sent me this after we discussed suits etc. Just so you know, this is NOT happening! (Except in my living room if my wife insists).

Question : In running I've often read that you should not do hard high intensity training on many consecutive days, mostly because of the strain on the body - especially when running on tarmac. Does the same apply for swimming and cycling? I was wondering since both of them does not impact the body as hard as running does with shocks etc.

Yes, but not to the same extent of course. The basic thought is that you train with intervals / speed to improve endurance (muscle fatigue) and train distance to improve speed. The thing with the swim and bike and run for that fact is that you are not going to be going all out sprinting in the swim, and then on the bike, and then on the run, so you don't train that way either. Speed / Interval training has it's place for certain, but you still need to have your training days of pace over a distance and time. This not only allows your body a break and recovery, but the truth is that you have to know how to pace on race day, so you have to train that way as well. As you do both you will be able to tell when / how / where you can increase speed / pace and when / where you can't. I'm not saying it's right but I do very little if any speed / interval work, I'm not saying I don't push at times because I do, but speed / interval work just tends to hurt me more than it's worth. A lot of this also falls into what I've said about having a long, medium, and short training day in each discipline. Long story short, doing 10 hill repeats on the bike is going to make you a stronger cyclist, but it's not the same as riding 50 miles non stop. I hope this answers the question if not let me know.

Has anyone tried any of the couch to 5k apps that you can play on your iphone and it tells you when to run/walk? I just wondered if they are worth it or if they are annoying.

I could not run at all and even walking at fast pace was hard for me. I used the Jeff Galloway 5k app (lolo 5k) He uses a run walk method and It really helped me a lot. I know he also has a 10k, half and full marathon apps also.

Love the PIC!! I have been looking at the front vs. back zip suits also. From what I have been told, it is easier to get in and out of a front zip suit but other than that it is your own personal preference.

Room for One More Turtle??

Hi everyone,

My name is Michelle and I decided to emark on this triathlon journey as a method of mind over matter. Turning the big 50 in September and I want to do so in the best physical and mental shape of my life. I have never been a couch potatoe, but have never been a real athlete either. I have walked consistently the past several years and just in 2013 tried to progress to jogging some. I am slow, typically average 12:00 minute mile. Would like to improve my time some, but I am okay with being slow. Have only ridden a bike for fun and never for any true distance. Took the bike to get tuned up last month - hadn't been on it in ten years prior to that. Swim only for recreation as well in the past. I just last week joined the local Y so I would have access to a pool.

Previous races: completed one 5k in 2013 and on in December of 2014.

2015 plans: February 14 - 5K
March - 8K
May 2 - my first 10k
May 16 - a mini sprint with a 200 yard pool swim, 10 mile bike and 2 mile run

There is a mini sprint in April with similiar distances but am a little weary of setting that soon of a goal.

Weight loss is not really a goal but could definitely benefit from toning up. Have lost about 25 pounds over the last 1 1/2 yrs by improving my diet and decreasing the processed foods.

I have no desire to finish on the podium, not even part of my goal. This is all for me and all about being in a healthier place and crossing the finish line. I would like to do a couple of sprints this summer and if things go well maybe even shoot for an olympic length by the end of the season, but way too early to make that decision. For now I just want to finish and feel good about it.

I would love the opportunity to be able to encourage other beginners like myself and to be a part of all of us reaching our goals this summer. I think having the encouragement from others on the same journey can be so inspiring. Sounds like everyone is off to a great start in this group.

I really like C25K and it's what I used to get me going when I started all of this. I just think it's really good how slow it starts off which really helps with confidence and developing a routine. I also like that's fairly quick (8 - 10 weeks, can't remember) and ask for 3 days a week. Take a close look at it and lolo that Suzie recommended, decide one those or another and get after it. I would suggest something like one of these or something like it to start. Also C25K is a run / walk program that works to less and less walking.

Welcome to the Turtles Michelle. You appear to have a really clear path and goals in mind which is awesome. I would not necessarily rule out the April Super Sprint but would not kill yourself trying to make it happen. If it's two weeks before and you know you can safely complete it then sign up and get after it, but if not keep training and 1 month later the other is at your door step knocking. If you are like a lot of people and enjoy doing races and they help keep you motivated you could also schedule a 5 or 10 K in April. Again welcome and you will be healthier when that new year comes around!!!

I used the "5k Runner" app and found it very helpful. (And was free) It's an 8 week program and involved three days each week I started the program 9 weeks out from a local 5k so that really helped me stay on track. I would definitely recommend. Have also heard very positive feedback on Jeff Galloways run/walk training programs. I work with someone who completed a marathon with his run/walk method and was very pleased with her outcome.

Excited to be a part of the group. I did consider planning a 5k in April , as I feel the goals keep me motivated; however, planning a special hike in the Great Smokey Mountains in April. Will hike up to the third highest peak in the park and spend the night at a rustic cabin with dinner and breakfast provided. (Including wine with dinner). The hike will range from 6-8 miles depending on which trail we choose with a couple thousand feet elevation gain. So this is my physical activity goal for April. Setting a monthly goal really helps me.

I have also found it keeps me on track to write down weekly goals. Meeting our goals is all about taking those baby steps to cross the finish line!

I started running using Couch to 5K. I originally used the one on cool runnings. the music is available on podcasts (mp3) and itunes. I use android so I had the mp3 which told you when to walk or run.

I LOVE podrunner intervals. The do have a 5k program that matches the Couch to 5k. It signals you when to walk or run as well.
