Humidity definitely affects my running. I do have Eexercise Iduced Asthma that can affect my running in this weather.  I filled a perscription for Albuterol last week, but have yet to use it. It really screws with my HR.

The key for me is finding a very shady route (like trails) and running very early in the morning. I am very lucky to be in consulting because it gives me way more flexibility to adjust my schedule based on the weather.

I don't find I have the same issues when biking, do others?

It does primarily affect my running as well...  - EIA for me too, but i usually take a puff or two prophilactically before exercise

The EIA only affects me biking on big hill climbs! I had a lot of trouble last year and thought I was just really out of shape, but felt a little vindicated when I was diagnosed. I have allergies and live in the Hudson Valley which is quite stagnant regarding airflow. A couple of summers ago it was so wet that mushrooms and moss were growing inside peoples homes!

You mean it is the heat & humidity, not that I am s.....l....o......w? Great news! I will let you know about this in late November when it finally cools down in So. TX. About the supplement thing, I should be ok with just water since my distances are not that long right? I get tired during workouts but I always manage to find some energy to finish with a little extra push. And why can't my body just pop open a fat cell if it needs energy? Very annoying.

I have been getting leg cramps swimming lately. I have never had this problem. Wed I rode 24 mi on the bike and last night went to the pool and at 500 get the cramp, rested, then wanted to swim 1000 but the cramp kicked in at 450 so I stopped. Any feedback?

Thanks everyone,
Lynn

Uh, yeah, lots of feedback.....24 miles riding in hot weather and you are only drinking water!?!?!?!? Bad Lynn, Bad! If you sweat, you need to replenish the minerals lost in that sweat. Gatorade, Accelerade, Heed, powerade, any of those would be great for you to drink during your ride in place of water. I bet you won't cramp on your double workout days!

OR you can take endurolytes in a capsule form and then drink water. I would have a banana or pop a gel before the swim wokout, after a bike like that. Anything over 120 minutes you need calories.

Your body will pop open fat cells, only in your aerobic zone. And you have to go for 45 minutes to 60 minutes to get your metabolism going. Are you doing most of your work in that zone?

let me know how this goes for you!

SO that's why I'm not losing any weight  - not going long enough (usually) and not slow enough (usually) - ok more ammo for the off-season - thanks!

Last nights run in the heat n humidity was much better in terms of hydration. Maiden voyage for amphipod 4 bottle system. After tightening it up suffieciently it was very comfortable and the botles stayed put. Nice product.  - only went through 16oz  (2 bottles) of accelerade during the run - and aside from belching from the liquid sloshing in my belly - it was pretty good - the heat and lack of hydration was not the limiter this time. but the ITB was - stretched at 10 minutes and 34 min - helped some but need to do the roller - Would a rolling pin work?  or a pience of handrail -  I like cheapo solutions if i can get away with it.

Dave, a rolling pin would work for rolling it out, but its gonna hurt. Can you get some high density foam to cover it and use some duct tape for good measure? LOL!

The technique is: roll from the knee up to the hip. G up 2 inches, down 1 inch. when you get to the hip, rotate your leg 15 degrees and do it again. this will take 3 passes over the leg and then do the IT band in the same method. Also roll out your soleus. go to http://www.tpmassageball.com/for the instructions. It cured my ITB!

As far as the belching, Accelerade makes me burp too. Try to drink smaller amounts more often. I really like Powerbar endurance drink. No belching. The iced tea flavor is good because its not sweet. And their recovery shake is the best! I like that as breakfast before a race.

As you can see I'm not terribly brand loyal for my nutrition. Could be a problem, no?

Going slow will get you the slow burn of fat cells. I really like long bike rides for this type of burn. BUT doing inervals helps too. I know, confused, right?

This months Runners World magazine has a lot of great tips for your running workouts.

Yes, I do it a lot. What I advise is to buy the Camelback cleaning kit. those brushes work really well! Rinse out the bladder with HOT water and dry with paper towels on the inside. Don't use soap, just a lot of hot water.

I have the 40 oz, 70 oz and 100 oz and the insulated one, too.

You guys are posting like crazy today!!!!!!!  Is it half day Fridays in the office ?

I bike using water for rides up to 50m (that is the farthese I have ever gone), but always take a couple of Endurolytes to keep the electrolytes up.  Like Jeanne suggested, I eat a Kashi Bar before hitting the pool for a little energy.  I cramped up the other day too, but I think it is because I did zero stretching going from one activity to the next. BAD!

To Daveo, the TP Massage equipment is so worth it! A rolling pin will not work nearly as well and I think the STICK stinks too.  You can forgo those chewy brownies that you talk about in your log for one month and voila you can affort the TP stuff.  This is my poor attempt at humor.

Enjoy training this weekend everybody.

Suzy

oh I don't pay for the brownies... they are catered in

Ok ok...I'll check out the products - spend some of that disposable income

It makes sense that I have probelms with the left leg - I was born with severely club left foot that was corrected at 6 mos. While it hasn't bothered me much in my lifetime - there is significantly less flexibility dorsi (sp) (toes to shin) so the soleus would be tight - which from what I've read can exacerbate ITB issues.

 brownies indeed! humph!

I bet if you roll out your soleus (which you could do with a rolling pin) your ITB will improve. That is the big thing with TP massage. Everything starts with your feet/soleus. It really has worked wonders for me.

Catered brownies? I would be soooo huge! They are my weakness. I was craving cookies yesterday but had no eggs, so I made shortbread and melted some Ghiradelli Chocolate all over it. I was going to make Millionaires Shortbread, but skipped the carmel step.

Wow.. Last night as I chilled watching TCM ( I'm a sucker for old movies) i got out the old rolling pin, set it under left calf - and just using the weight of my leg with a relaxed foot/ankle started creeping it back and forth - Holy cow found a honking huge hot spot - just worked it for about 30 minutes - small movements maybe 1-2" looking forward to doing it again tonight! - can you overdo massage??

I don't think so. BUT with your calf/soleus area you can do damage if there is a tear or strain in your achillies. If that is OK, then go for it. Also, when you hit a knot like that, rotate your ankle a couple of times each direction to work out the knot.

I would recommend that you massage 1-2x a day (for like 5 minutes) before and after your workouts. You can still do a big session at night.

I'm glad this worked for you. If you want to delve further into your leg issues, I highly recommend Ecoscue method. There is a clinic in downtown Chicago. They would be perfect for you and your history.

Yeah, and they will be until you fix whatever imbalance or compensation is going on in your body.

The TP kit is for your entire body to loosen everything up. you might want to roll out everything in your legs and see if that helps.

I wonder if doing a little yoga would help you....I really think the egoscue would be the best thing for you.

have you run at all since you started rolling?

Not sure it can be "fixed." When they corrected the club foot they took out a section of achilles, so there are concrete limitations. That said...

Egoscue is expensive and not easy to get to.

I love yoga - and it definately will be part of the off season plan.

I run today I'll let you know how is goes.

You can "self-diagnose" on the website for egoscue....for free! But sitck with rolling out the legs and loosening up the muscles. I think that is the most effective solution for now.

Have a great run!

Suzy, how is the thumb? How is your skin healing from the fall. Have you gotten back on the bike yet?

Skin is scarred, but fine.  The thumb is still sore, especially the day after biking, but not broken.  My PT took a look at it when I was in for my foot and gave me a taping lesson which helps, but mid-way through loosens up due to sweat.  I think it will just take some time.

Anyone racing this weekend?  There is a local 5k/10K in Madison and I am considering doing the 10k before a bike ride. After my miserable Tempo run today, I need a pick me up.

Glad to hear you are healing Suzy! I'm doing Pleasant Praire on Sunday -  my 2nd sprint - and prolly last Tri of the season, Unless I can find one local. Then there is the Big Shoulders 2.5 and 5k swim in September.  I think that might be enough for my first season....

Have you put any vitamin E on your skin? That will help. Or some Shea butter. I love that stuff when I get skin chafing razberries....

OMG Jeanne - OUCH and good luck. You are going to do this then follow with an Olympic? I'm right there behind ya! Well maybe in a couple of years.

Glad you are healing Suzy.

Dave did I see a 5 mile swim on your agenda? Awesome

A friend may let me have his bike so hopefully I will enter a sprint event soon. There will be a retirement party for the Roadmaster, you are all invited.

Good luck everyone,
Lynn
