wgraves7582 - 2009-11-17 9:09 AM Morning Kim - hope Florida was nice for you.  We are heading down the day after Christmas for 10 days - hope it is hot!!!!

Weather was warm.  Even though the days were packed, it felt great just walking from meeting to meeting.  Have to admit Orlando isn't my favorite though.  I prefer the beach and ocean.  Where are you going for the holidays?

My wife has some family down by Port Charlotte so there will be beach times involved.  Agree with Orlando - we are heading there on our way back home for a day or 2 at the world then she has more family at The Villages up north.

Just hoping for warm weather!

How is the leg doing?

Knee seems to be holding up.  I ran 4 1/2 on Friday and did ok.  My quads felt like I'd run 10 the next day though.  I'm not going to attempt the half this weekend.  They have an 8k I can drop down to, so am thinking that is the better plan.  How's the ITB holding up?

I am starving and I had breakfast.  I am eying my lunch and it's not even 10am.  What is about swimming that makes me so much hungrier than any other workout?

Good morning Ghoulies! I see we're back to our old form. Almost 2 full pages this morning before I even get to work, and I'm here early today! Now to catch up before I get distracted by any of that stuff I get paid for...

wgraves7582 - 2009-11-17 4:13 AM Morning Ghoulies - back in the office for today and tomorrow then off to Reno, NV for the week (and weekend at Yosemite if the weather holds off)

Snuck another run in this morning - another 1 min run / 1 min walk.  Legs seems to be hanging in there.

Tom - when you returned did you feel no pain at all or did you know how to stretch and roll it out after running?  Just wondering from someone with experience what your return to running went like.

Hey Bill. There was some minor pain at first, but mainly during the runs themselves. Once I was done with the workout I was a bit tender, especially at first, but it was never anything I couldn't stretch out.

I didn't have any kind of set rehab I followed, but when I was taking time off of running I did a lot of core work which I hear helps a bit. Same thing with stretching - I did all kinds of leg stretches before and after every run as well as on days off. I also got myself an ITB strap made by Protec, but I think it's basically the same as a Pattstrap which helped a LOT. When I first started doing short runs I just forced myself to be patient and take it easy.

Now I've been running on it pretty solidly for 2 months and I'm doing fine. Every now and then on a run I'll feel it get a little bit tight as I'm just heading out and getting warmed up, but it goes away quickly.

So far it sounds like you're doing everything right. I think for me patience and ST were the keys, and I also really like the ITB strap I got. Stay smart about it and you'll be in TransIowa shape in no time!

kcarroll - 2009-11-17 5:57 AM Morning Ann, Bill, Neal!  Back from Orlando.  Had almost no free time, so didn't get alot done workout wise but I walked a gazillion miles between hotels and the convention floor.  Oh, and did keep up on the PT.

Welcome back Kim! I hope the trip wasn't all work... Any good restaurants/meals to share with the Foodie Ghoulies?

I used a touring bike last year but I am contemplating upgrading (and getting rid of a couple of bikes sitting around not being used to their fullest) to Specialized TriCross Comp because it handles racks but can be used as a roadie/cross/tri bike as well.

That's a pretty sweet bike. Have fun shopping! Also, if any of those bikes you may get rid of happen to be around a size 58, let me know...

wgraves7582 - 2009-11-17 8:08 AM Don't eat like me during training but if you zoom in you can see some pepsi, gatorade, chicken fingers, and an empty pizza slice box.

The saying is don't eat anything you would not during training - I knew I would be eating junk like that so I trained eating that stuff so it did not bother my stomach at all - the guy I was riding with mainly just laughed and was waiting for me to puke somewhere out there but it never happened!

Sounds smart to me. Not to mention a good excuse for eating fried chicken and pizza. I'm all of a sudden very hungry...

I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with bar end shifters on drop bars. That's not a set-up you see everyday! (unless you have access to Bill's garage apparently) Then again I'm the definition of a cycling novice, so I apologize if I misinterpreted that.

Great pic though. I was just looking at the Trans Iowa page on blogspot. Definitely sounds like an interesting race. Should be a blast!

That is how the old touring bikes were set up because of durability.  You find them now with SDI shifters as well but a typical touring bike will have bar end shifters.  Practically indestructable!

Neal - most on this thread would shake their head but there was not going to be infinit or other health stuff and I don't know how the stomach would handle that over 24+ straight hours.

Sometimes you just need good old fashion junk food to carry you through!

Amen to that...

man oh man, im totally out of synch w the VILLAGE.

i 'missed' everyone.

KIM. i can TOTALLY RELATE about swimming and feeling fammished.  [welcome back by the way]

i just got back from the Y w a 1 mile continuous swim + 950yds.  i felt REALLY sloggish the first half of the miler, but then when i started the second part, i felt really efficient in the water.

i almost went ahead and swam the entire 2 miles, BUT... i 'resisted the urge'

im a gradual progression kinda of gal, so i stopped when the watch told me it was time to.

for me it isnt about swimming the distance, i KNOW (even more know than ever) i can swim TWO MILES, the GOAL are the three Es:  EFFICIENCY, ECONOMY AND ENDURANCE.

but yes, im ready to eat myself silly.  im.  so.  stinkin.  hungry.

i may have to make myself an xtra sammich - portabella shrooms, red onions, red peppers and provolone cheese on grilled ciabatta.  oh yum-my!
