So, how are those pesky TWISTers up to 81 pages today?!

Here's a question for you guys... say you are training for an Oly in August. Say you want to complete 'x' amount of swim, bike or run a week. Does it matter if it is broken up in to 2x a week sessions or 3x a week sessions? Do you think it's more important to just get the 'x' amount of training in? Or does the increased frequency of 3x a week help?

I'm asking because I think I've maintained a little better this winter than I have previously. At least as far as the bike goes. Maybe (sadly) my running too. For the most part I've been biking and running 3x a week. Or at least that's been my plan. I guess I've been doing more distance too...

And I'm trying to piece together my plan for my Oly in August. I want to be much better prepared than I was last year. I think maybe the 3x a week is better... but the hours a week scares me a little.

Are you following one of the training plans they have on this website?  There are a bunch and they have ones that are focused on a specific discipline that you may want to target.  So you could start one of the intermediate 20-week Olympic plans with a swim focus and that would probably work perfectly for you.

Because you are coming up on the 20-weeks-out point from that August Olympic.  And those training programs lay out exactly what your frequency and volume is each week.

Back to your specific question... One of the things that many of the tri training books preach is to accomplish your goals with the LEAST amount of training as possible.  Since we all have lives outside of our triathlons (family and work, primarily), we need to get the biggest bang for the training buck...

... so I think going to the gym twice in one week to do two 30-minute swim workouts would be more efficient than going to they gym 3 times in one week to do three 20-minute swim workouts.  Both get you 60 minutes of working out, but the 3-times-per week adds in all the travel time to the gym, showering, etc... so I would personally go with the 2 longer workouts.

Plus you're training for endurance, so I would think the longer workouts would serve you better.  Just my two cents worth jammed into 5 or 6 posts.

You know, I think just getting in the x amount of training is key.

Last year I did 3 olys, and I probably ran 2-3x a week, biked 1-2x a week, and swam 1x a week.  Clearly those were not the optimal frequencies, but I didn't really want to swim all that much, it was hard to get my bike out during the week before/after work, and it was easiest just to run all the time.  Plus I have more friends who are runners, so that just means I hung out with friends more.

Obviously, swimming and biking more often would probably have made me faster.  But I don't really care that much if I'm slow, I just wanna have fun an hang out with my friends Tongue out

I agree with this too.  I'd think doing 2 runs of 5-7 miles each a week is better than doing 3 runs of 3-4 miles.  When I swam 1x a week, it was always a mile open water.  But mostly because I came from a swimming background so doing sets in the pool weren't as valuable to me as learning to sight, being comfortable in the waves & seaweed, and learning to swim in a pack (and draft!!)

I agree with this too.  That's why I only biked 1-2 times a week.  It takes me forever to get my bike read, make sure my bottles are filled, make sure my tires are inflated, my chain if oiled etc.  When I ride, it's minimum 25 miles because I'm too lazy to get all that stuff ready for shorter rides.

  • I do like the idea of less prep time or travel time. The actual training time is hard enough to get for me. Extra time to driving to the Y, etc is hard to come by for me! Some one needs to be in charge of the kids...
