Here's a question for you guys... say you are training for an Oly in August. Say you want to complete 'x' amount of swim, bike or run a week. Does it matter if it is broken up in to 2x a week sessions or 3x a week sessions? Do you think it's more important to just get the 'x' amount of training in? Or does the increased frequency of 3x a week help? You know, I think just getting in the x amount of training is key. Last year I did 3 olys, and I probably ran 2-3x a week, biked 1-2x a week, and swam 1x a week. Clearly those were not the optimal frequencies, but I didn't really want to swim all that much, it was hard to get my bike out during the week before/after work, and it was easiest just to run all the time. Plus I have more friends who are runners, so that just means I hung out with friends more. Obviously, swimming and biking more often would probably have made me faster. But I don't really care that much if I'm slow, I just wanna have fun an hang out with my friends And I'm totally with you on the just wanting to have fun thing! Just last year, the end of the Oly was SO not fun... I got off the bike and just wanted to cry at the thought of having to run 10k. I did it but every step hurt. Lack of prep was the big issue. But it didn't help that it was cold and puring rain the whole race. I was wet and cold on the bike and I think my muscles were not as loose as I could have been going into the run. I'm hoping for good weather this year!! Yeah, that's why I would always opt to just ride my bike 1-2x a week, but doing at least 25 miles each time. Probably doing shorter workouts & more interval work would probably have made me faster, but as it was, I was comfortable doing the distance. . . Which was good enough for me to finish strong for the run, which is my favorite part! I think I only swam/biked enough so that I could have a fun run. This year, I'm working on getting faster on the bike, but the run is still my favorite, and that's what I'll probably focus on again this summer (especially doing 2 marathons this year, haha ). |
