Samantha I hope you are feeling better and that this is not anything serious and that you will be able to participate in the race that you have looking forward to this weekend.

Tracy I'm sorry to hear about what happened you your trip but I am glad things turned out well in the end. I think you have a great attitude and were able to take it stride. I think if it were me I probably would have been pretty upset about the whole thing.

JoAnne it sounds like your old trainer punished you during that workout. It sounds like you got a really good strength training session in yesterday.

Brenda glad to see that you are getting to spend time with your daughter. It's great to hear that you've been able to spend time running together. BTW I think you mentioned that you were going go see your daughter compete again a while back. How did she do?

Just want to share my wonderful training day yesterday. The public outdoor pools are open and one of the pools has lap swim times for an hour before the pool opens for the day. I had the entire gorgeous pool to myself! I love swimming outside with the sun shining down on me and the water temp was perfect.

The pool is only a 5 minute drive from the state park that I like to run at so after the swim I headed to the trail. The temps were mild (76 degrees) with very low humidity. It was wonderful. I feel very spoiled to be able to do this on a random Wednesday afternoon.

After all that fun I got to take the kids fishing!

Echoing Tony, it's great you had a great day!  It made me smile.

As for me, well, I think I may be forced to have an off week next week, for the first time due to how I'm physically feeling.... My hip adductors (old injury) have been acting up on me since Tuesday is when I really felt it.  I personally believe I started feeling this because of my wetsuit swim on Monday... I think there was something about the tightness of my suit on my leg that made it wacko.  (I felt the wetsuit was weird on my back then too, as well as during my triathlon a couple weeks ago.)  I really don't think it was because of my run mileage increase. (although I guess that could have been a slight contributor...)  Anyway, I started to feel it walking around on Tuesday, and on Wednesday when I went running, when I did pickups and really sped up, it was not good.  Today, I went to see my ART specialist guy... I'm hoping tomorrow and Saturday will get it feeling back to normal... although I am not very hopeful.   I'm planning on seeing the ART specialist again on Saturday.  Sunday is my 8 mile race which I was really looking forward to. I'm just hoping that it'll feel back to normal by then...

The injury doesn't seem like it would have been caused by a wetsuit.  I've been trying to rattle through my mind what the wetsuit may have done to get you hips in such a position to cause any issues and I can't come up with one.  I would say that you are more likely to have done something on the bike or run than swimming in a wetsuit.  Given your history I would lean toward the running as the culprit.  Remember running injuries seem to pop up over time, not at a moment you can usually pinpoint.  What is your shoe mileage?  Have you switched brands?  Basically, have you changed anything in the past month that had not changed for some time?

Yeah I wouldn't say the wetsuit caused the problem, but I felt that perhaps it exacerbated a problem that was looming (from the running, and maybe biking too), since the muscles in that area are wacko from not being completely "righted" from before.  I was thinking the overly tightness "grabbing" at the muscles with the wetsuit on for a prolonged period may not have helped.

What I'm feeling right now is reminiscent of how my glutes felt right before the whole area exploded a couple years ago.  I am really reconsidering running on Sunday.  sigh.

I'd look at the running/biking as a cause as well.  Biking in an aggressive position can be tough on the hips, and running is very hard on the adductor.  If you've had previous issues there from running, I would definitely figure out causes and see if there are exercises you can do regularly to strengthen and keep the area happy.  I've had issues in the hip area from hockey, and for me a variety of kettlebell exercises have really gotten the problems under control.  Hopefully the ART has helped, and by Sunday you're well enough to give it a spin anyway.

As for me, I need to spend a little more time as a mentee.  I am racing, I hope, Sunday, and need some input.

I worked from home yesterday because my youngest spent the previous night throwing up every hour and my wife - who has the harder job as the stay at home parent - had surgery the day before and wasn't really up for dealing with him.  So I spent the day holding the bucket and keeping him comfortable while trying to keep up with work.  Well, sure enough, I woke up today with the same bug.  My wife and middle guy also had it today, so it's been a pretty nasty day at our place.

Today I've been totally unable to keep any food or drink inside, in fact I had no idea there was so much "stuff" insiode me waiting to come out (sorry for the image), and can barely stand up without feeling like I've just finished a century ride.  Since J, the little guy who had it Weds night/Thursday, is fine today, I'm assuming I'll be fine tomorrow.  Hard to imagine right now, but I'll trust it.

I've obviously lost something (everything?) today in terms of glycogen/energy, so I'm wondering what, if anything special, I should do tomorrow to prep for a Sunday race, especially in terms of eating.

Warren I would like to help, but I'm clueless on nutrition! I had a 35 mile ride tonight and my recovery meal was 2 slices of pizza and a beer! At least I skipped the double quarter pounder! Although that does sound good! But that's also the reason I still drag a tire around!

Oh man!  So sorry!  That's the worst!  I have a little story for you.  (It seems as if I always have a story!)

Last year, I woke up the day before a half marathon puking.  Bad bug.  Horrible.  No race for me.  I felt much better after a couple days.  The following weekend, I was going to do a super hilly metric century ride.  I tried to get myself fueled up and kinda felt ready to do the ride.  I wasn't 100%.  On the last wicked hill, I got a charlie horse in my quad.  I never ever get those things.  It was so bad, I had to stop and beat on my leg for about 5 minutes.  When I got going again, I still had about 10 miles to go.  My quad threatened mutiny the whole 10 miles.  The next day, I was really super tired.  The day after that, I was sicker than I have ever been and diagnosed with pneumonia.

In retrospect, I was not ready to do the metric century 1 week after having the flu.  I didn't eat enough to bring my body back up to normal.  IMO it takes at least 2 weeks to come back from the flu.  Now I'm super cautious after having a bad flu with puking.  It took me about 9 months to get my running back up to where it was pre-pnuemonia.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.  I hope you all feel better quickly.

Ouch - that sucks. Not enough experience to give you much advice, but I can say you should be drinking more fluids than you think you need to.

I really hope you feel better buddy - that sounds pretty unpleasant!

Warren what distance is the race you are doing? How awful for you and your family and I pray everyone is feeling better. I read a few online articles and they all suggest the same things - start with liquids, gatorade, water, broth etc. If you can keep that down then move to easily digested, bland solids - eggs, bananas, applesauce, rice, toast, crackers. Avoid dairy, meat (like steak) and anything fibrous. This isn't going to give you the nutritional boost I think you are looking for to race but you need to work with what your stomach will allow.

BEST WISHES!!

I have a long ride planned today then I will spend the rest of the weekend packing and cleaning the house. We leave for our Disney vacation on Monday!!!!!!!!!!! I actually kind of wish I had not commited to this ride today because I feel like I have so much to do and we are not starting the ride until 10:00. I am riding the HIM course with a friend who puts on some local races to check the roads and place signs. I think it is going to take a while! The HIM will be next weekend but I'll still be out of town.

I'm planning on taking my bike and trainer on vacation if we can fit it in the van. The house we have rented has a house pool and a neighborhood pool so I should have no trouble finding a place to swim. Finding a place to run is the easiest. Normally I would scrap training during vacation but I want to race a sprint on July 1st so I better keep up the training this time!

Thanks for your words and prayers all.

Tracy, that's quite a story.  This wasn't a flu or anything too bad; in fact I'm probably 75% this morning.  Still crazy tired (and a little sore in the mid section) but I was able to eat a banana and some soup this morning without too much trouble.  Still not quite right, but the direction is great and compared to yesterday I feel amazing.

Dina, it's "only" a sprint, and it was really an afterthought race, so I'm totally not stressed about it at all.  But once the horn sounds I'll want to push as hard as I can, and I'd like take this run fitness out for a spin.

I think I'll just try to keep loading up on fluids with carb potions as I can tolerate for most of the day, and maybe some plain pasta or something like that this afternoon.  Not sure if I'll run or not at all today, though I'd like to get at least a short bike in to make sure the tires are on ok and the shifting adjustments I made this week are working.

Warren, hope you're feeling better and all goes well for you at the race tomorrow!!

Yes, I do need to do exercises which will strengthen/improve the problem areas!!  Thank you for the gentle reminder.  This is a weakness for me.  I saw your post before heading to the ART session, so I asked about some exercises to do.  Now, I NEED to make sure to spend time on exercises!!  Just a few minutes everyday of these exercises and stretching could mean a ton of time and heartache saved in the future because hopefully it'll keep the injury at bay, right?!

Hopefully this all was just a slight scare I needed to make sure that I keep up on injury prevention exercises.

On another note, this is right about the time I will be running tomorrow, should nothing go wrong.  It is already 80 degrees---HOT!  I think I will be taking a water bottle along with me.

Warren glad to hear you are feeling better this morning. Sorry to hear about the bug that hit you and your family. I hope you guys are all feeling better. Hopefully you'll be feeling well enough to get to race tomorrow. Take care of yourself.

Dina hope you and your family have a great time on your vacation.

Samantha glad to hear you made some progress with your ART sessions and I would agree it is important for you to stick to those exercises that are going to help you prevent that type of injury. I hope you are feeling up to and being to participate in your run tomorrow and I hope it goes well for you if you do.

I finished.  What a mental struggle it was!!!!!!  (little to do with injury.)  It was soo tiring.  Heat didn't help, and neither did the hills- rolling throughout the course. I was also reminded why I like sprints!!  2-3 miles in (it was 8.2 miles total), I was thinking this is so long!! (And, how I can't believe I did a half marathon in 1:45 two years ago...) I walked a lot, especially towards the end.  Walk a little, jog a little.  Honestly the only thing that kept me going was knowing that I had a shot for female 3rd place/a prize (there were 12 females total) which was the position I was in for most of the race. I think I would have walked a lot more otherwise. There was a girl that came up on me towards the end, last mile or so, and I let her pass me initially (I was walking on and off) and I was thinking I'm not sure if I have it in me to pick it up, even a little.  In the end, I did.  This resulted in a $20 gift certificate to a local Japanese restaurant.  But man, I felt like I was going so slow, and I was just so tired throughout the whole run!  Oh yeah, and I had side stitches virtually from the moment I started the race!!  Worse that I've had it in a race, in memory.  As always, who knows the cause, but I think part of it had to do with not sticking with my original plan of how much to drink in the morning, I think I might have had too much water...

We'll see in the coming days how this affects my injury that's there, ever so slightly...  Oh, and I warmed up like crazy.  If I wasn't walking, stretching, or doing some sort of dynamic flexibility exercise, I did not feel right!  This was like an hour (maybe more) leading up to the race.  It felt weird and twisty in my problem area at times during this warmup phase when I ran, so I was a bit worried.  I think it helped that I didn't go too fast during the race.

Sounds like a great race despite all the concessions.  Congrats.

I had a great time at my sprint, I came in 4th in my AG.  I passed the guy who came in 3rd about 2 miles into the run going up a massive hill, and I honestly don't remember him passing me back and his time was almost 2 minutes faster than mine.  It seemed weird that he could have passed me and then gotten that much ahead of me in the last mile and a half, especially given what he looked like when I went by him - even as slowly as I was running at the time.  Oh well, I was happy overall with my effort.  Tough but fun course, lots of short steep hills and a very technical bike course.  I'll try to get a race report up in the AM.

Olympian Jarrod Shoemaker participated as a relay entry - he did the swim and the run and local professional hockey player (Barry Ference of the Bruins) did the bike.  Jarrod was very personable and had some great stories and is WAY too young to be so good at this sport!  Team Hoyt was also there.  What an inspiration they are.

Samantha - Way to continue moving in the right direction even through your weariness. Sometimes a race turns into a pure test of wills. Congratulations on winning in your mental effort!

Warren - I'm so glad you got to race after being so sick. 4th in AG is no small feat although it usually stinks to miss out on a podium spot. Congratulations, though! Team Hoyt brings tears to my eyes anytime I read or see a video of them. How awesome that you got to be in a race where they were. You rubbed shoulders with some impressive people today.

I posted my RR from the aqua mile and it's here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...
I was very happy with my results. I've pretty much been a bum today. We just ate out and I splurged on a piece of Tuxedo Cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory. Yummy, Delicious! Sometimes you just gotta live on the edge!

Thanks for asking about my daughter, Tony. I bragged on Facebook about her but guess I left you guys out. Coming into state her relay team was ranked 17th out of 27 teams that made it and they were the youngest with 3 freshmen and 1 sophomore. They ran a personal best and ended 11th in the state! My daughter ran the anchor leg and she finally broke the 1 minute mark on her split. It was a really exciting day. You amaze me at your kindness in remembering, Tony. I nominate both you and Dina on getting the group award for thoughtfulness.

I think I get to see and meet Matt (and maybe his lovely wife and kids?) for the first time next Sunday at the Maumee Bay tris in Ohio. I saw your name on the participant list. I'm looking forward to another Oly distance to see if I can finally run a 10K strong after a swim and bike. I've been doing more brick workouts this month so we'll see but I'm not feeling overly optimistic since it's been so long that it's come together for me. Are you getting ready, Matt? I don't know if you'll be camping there, but we have site #13 and will be coming in on Friday. The state park sounds beautiful so I'm looking forward to exploring it. Did you do the race last year? Do you know if it's normally wetsuit legal or not?

Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!

I had a FANTASTIC training weekend!!!!  I've been experimenting with some of the Hammer products.  I've always been a fan of Sustained Nutrition for my rides over 40 miles.  I went ahead and ordered some other stuff from them to see how it would work for me.  I don't know if it was just in my head, but I really did great during my 40 mile ride on Saturday and my 13 mile run today.  I seriously feel like I could go out and do another long workout tomorrow!  (I'm not going to.)  I'm going to keep experimenting with their other products and see if I can replicate this awesome training weekend.

If anyone wants to order directly from Hammer Nutrition, could you kindly include my customer number on your order?  My customer number is 202836.  Here are the specifics:

Everyone who raced this weekend, great job!

Not much happening with me. Just training as usual.

Just a bit of news. It looks like Ironman California is down to two cities. Santa Cruz and LAKE TAHOE for the 2013-2017 seasons. No sure if it's going to be a 70.3 or 140.6.  If it's up here, it will be one of the hardest IM's there is. It will have it all, altitude, big climbs, heat, cold, etc.

Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there.

A quick post from me this morning before heading to work.

I am now through all of the high school graduation activities and I hope to be able to get back to my normal routine.  I ave had a really busy 3 weeks and I am VERY ready to get back to something that will allow a more steady and routine approach to life.  The past week brought an extra workday on Friday and preparation for Laiken's graduation party on Saturday.  Then Saturday was long because we had 2 parties, one for the teachers and adults and the second one for the kids.  It became a pretty late night and I wasn't in bed until 1:30, which never happens for me.

I was still able to get some training in yesterday and had a little bit of extra running.  I planned 7 miles and ran 8.5 then later when it was hotter I rode 30 miles.

Later today or tonight I'll post up some things from your post this weekend.  Now it's work time.

Samantha congrats on the 3rd place finish and winning the gift certificate. I'm glad you were able to finish up without and ill effects. It sounds like you really had to tough it out to finish it up the race so you earned it.

Warren congrats on the 4th place finish. I was glad to hear that you were able to race yesterday. That is a great finish considering that you were sick two days before the race and just getting over it. It sounds like the event was great and I agree with everyone else it must have been awesome to see team Hoyt out there. They are so inspirational that must have been pretty cool to have had the chance to be out there with them.

Brenda congrats on finishing your aqua mile race and thanks for the update on your daughter. That is awesome she did great along with the rest of the team. You must be so proud of her. It sounds like she is only going to get better at it.

Quick training update I have been so tired this past week that I've had to push myself to get through my workouts but I had a good weekend in terms of training. I got a two hour ride on the bike indoors on the trainer Sat evening for 36 miles and then Sun I was going to just do an hour run but I wound up getting in a 9 mile run. This week I will miss a few days so I will take it as a recovery week. I will get a couple of swim sessions in on Mon and Wed and will get a bike/run brick in on Tue. I will not be able to train on Thu and Fri so they will be much needed rest days. I will also take a pass on the strength training this week as well.
