Meulen - 2010-06-22 8:33 PM Trina. That is a rreeeeal nice bike!!! Jay. +1 to what Tim says about having a basic understanding about the bike. I've also found trial and error to be the best method. There is also a wealth of knowledge on you tube about bike repair. Tim. HTFU!! We've seen your race results and you rock!! How many times do you fall on the mtb and get back up? This should be easy, and you got to buy a bunch of new toys!!!

I know, I know... I've been whinning lately.  I just can't get a grasp on how I'm feeling.  I don't feel like I've been overtraining, but at the same time I'm showing signs of it: constant hunger, fatigue, and apathy.  But when I do finally get around to working out, my paces, effort, and HR are within normal limits for me.  However, I did have a rough few days at work which could be contributing to the issue.

I think I'm going to make the drive tonight and do a practice triathlon.  The company sets up a course similar to a sprint distance with transition areas and timing.  I think it would be a fun way to mix up my training a little.

I leave for Tahoe in the morning.  I'm planning on preriding the bike and run course with my wife when we get up there.  Nothing strenuous, just somethig to loosen the legs, do some area familarization, and try to acclimate to the altitude.  Last year, I could definately feel the effects of the altitude; going from sea level to 6,500 ft is a butt kicker.

Tim - Did you crash your bike? Are you ok?

Yes, on the road, but I'm fine.

Brian and Tim - You're both buying $12K+ bikes?! Niiiiicce Laughing

Absolutely not.  12k bike = 1/2 my net worth when my wife serves me with divorce papers!

I've decided I'm going to do an Oly in September.

Very cool!  Keep at the training, be PATIENT, and you will do fine.

I went ahead and upgraded my road bike. Bought a Look 105 566 (it was only $2.5K). I love it - I feel like I am putting half the effort into my biking and this is doing everything for my attitude. I was starting to dread getting on the bike and that is not a good way to feel when you're training for triathlon. I have not put my clipless pedals on it yet....thought I'd get a good feel for the bike before I crash it.

Nice!  Nothing like a new toy to add a little motivation.

If you are consider a new wetsuit, read on.  This is fresh off the presses.

USA Triathlon Adopts New Wetsuit Regulation

I read about that over on ST Monday also.  I think most tri specific suits are no more than 5mm other than the DeSoto Water Rover or whatever it's called that was already identified.

Yep.  I believe most companies use 5mm on the chest and 3mm on the back.  I really couldn't imagine wearing a suit with more than 5mm of material.

There are a couple shops I've been to, but nothing tri specific.  I dont know if they offer any classes, but I like to get my hands wet and learn by trial and error also.  Then take it to a bike shop after I screw it up :D

I had to leave some for building a race bike (MTB)over the winter. So I'm just riding the wheels that come with the P4 for a while first. I will probably get a power meter first too. Unfortunately, my funds are not exactly unlimited. LOL But I'd say the P4 is going pretty big, plus I did add some goodies, like an Xlab wing and pedals.

I took the night off last night to spend some time with my goddaughter. Man!! I feel bad for her! Her parents split up about 6 months ago. Mommy's got a new boyfriend, whom I'm afraid may not be the best influence in her life. She also has 2 handicapped brothers and one brother who's always in trouble. My wife and I never had kids and these kids parents were are best friends for the past 15 years so I love these kids like our own. I need to make it a point to step back from my training and spend more time with them!

I'm also pretty sure I may be dealing with ITBS. When I run my left knee tightens up and hurtrs around the outside. Especially, as I lift my foot off the ground. Overuse/Overtrain/hurt/sick, I suppose I'll cover it all. My neck has also been very soar lately. I suspect it may be due to bike fit and previous problems stemming from motorcycle and car accidents I had when I used to race. All this has been very frustrating to me lately. I don't mean to whine, but I just had to vent a little

On to the good news!!

First, I've decided to sign up for the Evergreen tri on July 17. It will be my first Olympic! The venue is perfect and allows my wife and I a weekend away and hang out with friends that live in the area where the tri is.

Second, I got word from the bike shop my bike will be ready for final fit and delivery either this weekend or early next week!

Lastly, all this has prompted me to a plan of action. Being 3 weeks out from the tri I'm going to go into maintainance mode for the next couple weeks and then taper. I'll focus more on swimming for now. That should give me time to take care of my injuries and get my new bike and old bike fit to prevent new ones, maybe see a chiro and sports doc if I need to, and spend some time with my goddaughter. I don't think I'll be making any significant gains in the next 3 weeks anyhow, and I'm doing this Olympic as a test guage for an HIM. I'm not really going to be there to compete. When it's all done, I'll get to spend some time with my friends on their family farm, do some trap shooting and maybe some hunting.

Brian, sorry to hear about your friends and the injuries.

If it truely is ITBS, be CAREFUL!  As you know, I suffered from the same thing the beginning of the year.  It sucks!  It will set you back and recovery is long.  I'm roughly six months post onset and still not back to where I was in my training.  I still have lingering effects every once in a while too.

My recommendation, cut back the volume, especially the run and avoid speedwork for the time being.  While cycling, make sure you turn smooth circles, keeping the gears light, and no mashing.  Working on swimming is a good alternative, but I wouldn't do any kick drills or flip turns at the wall.

As for PT, foam roller (black), stretching, yoga, and lateral stability exercises.

Congrats on the new bike!

got it...thanks. I may also get a deep tissue massage and see if that helps relieve some of the pressure. This is getting really frustrating though. It seems everytime I build my miles near the 10 mile mark on long runs something happens!!

Where do recommend getting that foam roller at? I haven't seen many in stores. I did see something similar here: http://www.all3sports.com/product_info.php?pName=trigger-point-tech...

I get 15% off for my Lifetime Fitness membership and this product looked interesting.
