KC - Great progress on the video.  You can really tell how much more comfortable you look.  Good job.

Caleb - Nice bike.

Deb - Just keep plugging away at the swimming and your times are gonna come down.   Did you feel like you were dragging since you hadn't eaten anything?  That could definitely play a part in it.

Kieth - Great job on the 1000 yards continous.  That is a huge milestone.

Scott/Dave - Good tips on the nutrition.  I might have to try some of those especially on the run.  I don't usually have any issues since I have a stomach of steel and can handle anything but I found that during the run in my 70.3 I had no desire to eat any Gu's (probably because I had already eaten 12-haha)

Dave - Great photo.  Is that your bike group? haha

Rob - Great idea on the Road ID's.  Don't worry about work- I 'm going through the same thing right now. All you can do is try to get in your workouts when you can and don't get frustrated if you have to miss one.  Until you get you triathlon sponsorship from some company, work still has to pay the bills right?

I had a hell of a week last week but made the best of it.  On Thursday I had to make an unexpected trip to my project in Iowa.  I was in the car for about 10 hours and about 3 on site.  I got home about 9 pm and it just messed me up.  I did my tempo run on Fridday and I was trashed all day.  I don't think I recovered right.  I had a show on Friday and Saturday and got home at 3 am both nights.  All weekend I knew I HAD to do my 23 miler and I was dreading it.  It actually went really well.

I did some research on the "peeing" thing and determined I was drinkining too close to my start.  I drank 20oz. about 1-1/2 hours before and got it all out before the run.  I drank about  50 oz. of Gatorade/Water and ate 5 GU's on the run.  I didn't have to stop once to pee so thats is good   I didn't crash/bonk at all but did get pretty uncomfortable around 3:30 hours but pushed through it.  My route cut me a little short as I came up to my car at 22.5 miles and it just looked too good so I stopped.  One thing I won't do again is drive to my route as it was pretty painful driving immediatley after-haha

Dave - that pic is just plain wrong.

My legs feel pretty good.  I've signed up for double spin class on Monday nights now, so no morning or midday work-outs for me on Mondays - at least for the near-term.

Tim/Rob way to fight through life and try to get workouts in.  That is the hardest part of this sport.

Tim, It is great your are figuring out your drinking/nutrition now as it will make race days so much easier.  Just a quick question on the drinking,  did you say you had 50oz during the run?  If so you will have to drink about 200oz when its hot out during a HIM.   Did you weigh yourself before/after and account for the weight of the fluids replaced again?  Just wondering how your body reacted.  Nice job and keep up the hard work.  BTW that is not my bike group LOL

Rob, I know but its pretty darn funny...  It just show we really don't care what we look like in this sport  :-)  Man you really like those double spin classes,  do you have 2 different instructors?  My only advice is to try and focus on real world biking, If the group is geared for "fitness" they do alot of jumps and different things that Will never apply to riding a bike outside.  You could do the 1st session with a higher resistance and focus on power then on tired legs for the second one lower the resistance and focus on cadence and cardio (or vice versa)  Either way your doing great and hopefully we can all be outside soon!!!

Yes - I drank 50oz. I weighed myself afer and was 167 which means I lost about 3 lbs. I think.  I felt great after.  And I actually drank more than 200 oz. in Branson last year - haha.  It was 75 at the swim start, 90 for the bike, and Real Feel of 100 during the run.  I knew it was gonna be hot and really worked my nutrition out.  I did determine that I drank too much on the bike because I stopped at 3 aid stations to go to the bathroom.

Here was my nutrition plan for that race.  I followed it pretty close - I only had 2 or 3 Gu's during the run but couldn't get enough fluids in.  Remember I sweat like crazy.  Even yesterday my face was covered in salt after the run.  When i took a shower my eyes actually burned when my face hit the water and the salt ran into my eyesYell.

Sounds like a lot of us had a tough week last week. Hopefully this one goes a little better for everyone.  Got a long swim tonight.  Got to make these swim workouts count before the pool gets shut down for two weeks.  I guess that will give me more time to focus on my run which definitely needs some attention.

Hope everyone has a good week.

I have a non-cyclist friend who says I look like a clown in search of a circus.

I did hard bike and 8 mile run Saturday, long 3 hour spin on the trainer Sunday and feel like something twists in my left leg.  I iced, everything else last night and today.  Wearing a light brace.  No pain today, but nursing it.  Will stick to the weights and PT only...swim in the morning, then evaluate before a hard bike Tuesday evening.

Worried that at 59, my legs may not have what I need to train to push the IM...but I am good with only finishing so why am I training like a marathon runner, which I am not.  If I get out of the water at 1:30-1:45, the bike at 5:45 to 6, I can jog the marathon and get over in plenty of time.  So my coach and I may be talking soon...

Scott you are doing awsome.  I will never question anyones workouts but you are killing it.  My 36yr old body would not hold up so I am impressed at how good your doing.   The biggest thing is how to work the runs in, bike/swim have very little impact but that darn run kills my body.  If you keep pushing just remember to take time and enjoy the training, because race day will FLY by.  Even though its hours long its goes by so fast.

I have decided this year I am going to either not race IMWI or just finish it.  I just finished IMCMA last year and had a blast, was able to look around and enjoy the day.  And the funny thing is my time was only allittle slower than actually being trained and trying.

Wow if drank 48oz per hour and 3 gels I would be puking everywhere.   In a hot half I would be happy with 48oz for the whole run.   How do you get your fluids on the run? fuel belt or aid station?

By racing IMWI what were you trying to accomplish?  Personnaly I'd rather have fun than hurt like crazy on the course just to shave off a few minutes and climb up a few spots.

Just got my wetsuit a few days ago and signed up for my first tri!  I'm on my way!

For me its trying to improve, I will never be a top 10 AG person but I want to do an IM in the 10hr time frame.  Race day is not where it is the hardest when trying to go fast its the 12 months leading upto it.  Not to mention the sacrifices you have to do in order to put yourself in position for a good race.  To your point 99% of the population have no clue the difference between a 9hr IM or a 17hr IM, so its purely personal.

Have you tried the wetsuit on yet?  Signing up is the 1st step! Way to go.

Hey Team.

Got a run in outside today followed by a bike on the trainer. I was a decent day here but not good enough for biking outside. My legs were stiff and sore from all the hustling up and down the curling rink this past weekend but it felt good to be back at it again. More curling tonight. I am back in the water tomorrow night and looking foward to it. Three days without a swim and I miss it. I feel like I have lost 3 days in the pool that I can never get back and I don't like that.

Coach - WOW is all I can say about that picture ( I am tossing out my red spandex right now - LOL). BTW, what kind of toys are you planning on hiding in those barns? Boat? Classic Cars? As far as racing is concerned, if you want to take a year off, do it and don't worry about it.

Tim - nice to hear from you and it looks like you are doing great. Just out of curiousity, since I am hoping to just do sprints this summer, I have not done the research yet, but what should I be thinking about in terms of fluid intake for the shorter races?

Caleb, hope you enjoy your swim.

Scott - you are a machine, but make sure you find out what it is that is giving you the issue you mentioned.

Keith - what kind of suit did you buy? I actually bought myself 2 this past winter (sleeved and sleevless) and am already starting to practice putting them on and taking them off. I am really looking forward to my first swim in one to see how it feels.

Have a great night everyone.

KC

Kc, not taking year off. Just taking year off of "hard" training.   As for barns I have been know to buy a classic car or two (71 cudas are my vice had 4 over the years thanks to my dad getting me hooked)  But right now we have a large toy hauler we take to races along with the truck for it, a couple enclosed race trailers, a couple vehicles we only drive in either winter or summer.  We also have family with alot of toys so filling up the property will be pretty easy.

They did awesome with aid stations on the run.  I think there were 14 so getting fluids on the run was not an issue.  Like I said my plan kind of fell apart in the run just because so many aid stations and I just drank at every station so kind of lost track.  During my training I tried to train at the hottest part of the days intentionally and had a few bad experiences.  That fluid plan was created from experience and research and was probably excessive but I was really worried about getting it right.

Double spin class was AWESOME!  I peeled it back a little at the beginning of the second class but got the urge to push so  I did.  Came home and pounded a protein shake.  Now it's time to carb up with a couple of beers and call it a night.

I have LSD on the bike on the weekends, so, weather permitting, I'll get outside on those days.

I bought the Vortex3 sleeveless.  I put it on and off a couple of times already.  Found a group that does open water swims not to far from me weekday mornings.  So I'm going to try it out when they start to get a feel for the suit and swimming with it.  The only problem is that it's 30 minutes drive (not to bad since I live in the boonies) and starts at 6:15am.  That's early when you don't get to go to bed until 1am.

Dave- What's that safety thing you swim with called again?

So my Ironman 70.3 training started this week and it started with a MONSTER swim - 4750 yards -haha.  I thought it was a typo at first but no.  I did 4150 this morning and would have kept going if I had more time.  This was my longest swim workout to date and I actually felt pretty good.

Now I just need to get my butt in shape to sit on the bike for over 1-1/2 hours and I will be good.

It took me about 1h 40m.   I really worked on my form this off season becasue last year my shoulders would get really sore after swim 3000+.  I am hoping that the form work along with some weight training helped because I am not sore at all.  My co-worker just got a camera that can film underwater so I might try to borrow it to get some video like KC.

Hey Team.

Tim - if you do video would you share it with me. I would loev to see what the swimming stroke of someone who knows what they are doing looks like.

Today - long day with work. Still a bit sore from the weekend combined with yesterdays run and bike. I just need some sleep I think. Those curling bonspiels can wear you out if you are not careful.

All I had time for today was a 40 minute swim - pool was busy and I was pissed at the lack of etiquette - thus, results - no good.

Have a great night and a nice Wednesday everyone.

KC
