Tim, I hope you enjoyed the race today (and kicked tail of course).

The Vineman course preview went well, although it took way longer than anticipated!
Swim: The current is greater than I heard...it took much more effort on the out-bound leg than it did on the return trip. We FLEW back after the turn-around. Water temperature was warm - could easily be done without a wetsuit but I like the bouyancy. Depth: this was interesting. I had heard that it's shallow. It was plenty deep to swim normally until about the last 300 meters before the turn-around. My hands were hitting the bottom and it was hard to stay in my routine. I flipped over on my back and did some backstroke which actually seemed easier.

Bike: The course is gorgeous. Wineries and vineyards everywhere. Miles 5-20 had really rough patches of road and had pretty good rollers. Chalk Hill is supposed to be a b$tch at mile 46 but it really wasn't that bad. It was maybe 10 minutes in my smallest gear, then it was pretty much over. There's a nice downhill stretch after that.

Can't wait to hear how Tim's race went! I'll get a few pictures from my day up soon.

Well, I'm sorry to say, my race was less than stellar yesterday.  I don't have all of the splits yet or offical standings, but here a little synopsis.

I just blew up on the swim.  The only thing I can think of is the altitude.  I just couldn't get my breath during the swim.  I started with my normal bilateral breathing form, but that only lasted for about 500 yards.  I had to resort to breathing every other stroke to be able to catch my breath.  I became a head case pretty soon after this and actually had to stop for a second, gather my thoughts, and force myself through the remainder of the swim.  Since I was slower, I came around the buoy for lap two just as they were starting the short course racers.  So, I got to fight through the mass all over again.  Unfortunately, I think my swim split was near, or just under, 2 minutes per 100.

The bike course played longer than I thought.  Course was 22.55 miles with a mixture of singletrack and fireroad.  Trails were in great conditions.  Fireroads were the typical heavy rock conditions found in the Tahoe basin.  Total elevation for the course was 2,177 feet.  After the swim, I figured my only chance was to go all out on the bike.  No issues passing on the singletrack; everyone was pretty curteous about letting people pass.   I had a good ride and passed alot of people, so I was shocked to see my time was 1:49 on my GPS.  I thought I would of been faster, but this still averages out to 12.36 MPH.

Oh boy, the run.  As I said before, the run course at this race is an absolute killer.  You come out of transition and head straight uphill for a little over two miles.  Well, with my philosophy of leaving nothing on the bike course, my gluts and lower back were already a little tight when coming in on the bike.  As I started the run, it took sheer determination to keep my legs moving.  All I could focus on was mile 2.25 were I knew the course would flatten out.  I made it to the first tree across the trail (about 0.75 mile)  which requires a hurdle.  From this point, I had to alternate between a 10 count walk and then run as long as I could.  To my surprise, I was actually passed some people using this technique and the steep uphill walk helped stretch out my gluts.  My mileage splits from my GPS were 11:24, 12:17, 8:30, 6:53, 6:52, 5:43 (0.85 mile = 6:44 pace).  I don't have the elevation for those first two miles right now, but I would guess it is near 1,000 ft.

Total time was around 3:15.  My wife said I finished 24/150ish overall and 8/??? in AG, which only gets me 39/75 points for nationals.   To give you a little perspective, I believe the overall winner, pro racer, was at 2:48.

Oh well, what can you do?  We all have these days where things just don't come together.  Today was my day.  Back to the drawing board and revise the game plan for when I have to come back to Tahoe for the Incline Village race in August.  I need to work out this altitude issue with the swim!

working on it. It's been a real busy weekend. I'm taking my wife to the cubs/sox game in a few. It's been raining all morning so I haven't had the opportunity to get outside with a camera yet. All I got are some phone pics that BT won't let me load up.

Tim - Sorry to hear you didn't do as well as you hoped. It sounds like a BRUTAL course, and I know how hard swimming can be up there. The altitude does make it tough to maintain a normal race pace and the cold water doesn't help I'm sure! Hopefully you have a few chances to train at elevation between now and the Incline Village race.

Here's a few pictures from today's ride with my wife.  She did pretty well, but there were times when I think she wanted to kill me.  We rode from our condo through various trails to eventually hook up with the Tahoe Rim Trail.  From there, we rode to Watson Lake and back.  It was absolutely beautiful out today.

My wife not so happy with me as we climbed the TRT toward Watson Lake.  Most people descend on this stretch, but I wanted to add a little spice to the ride.  Please don't tell her this!

I just can't believe there is still snow and its almost July.  We even had to walk a couple spots coming out of Watson Lake due to the snow being to thick across the trail.

Watson Lake.

Total time was around 3:15.  My wife said I finished 24/150ish overall and 8/??? in AG, which only gets me 39/75 points for nationals.   To give you a little perspective, I believe the overall winner, pro racer, was at 2:48.

Although you don't think you did as well as you would have liked, I applaud you for even attempting a race at altitude. I can't even walk down the street at altitude.

Good job! Kiss

nice pics Dave!! They started the swim by the dam? There wasn't a rolling current there was there?. That could be dangerous!! I Had 2 friends lose there lives trying to save someone stuck in a rolling current by a damn a few years ago.

Tim,

Sounds like you muscled through a really tough mental challenge.  While the physical result is not what you wanted, would think that there's a victory in that you stayed with it.  Have to think that many would have given up with the challenges you ran in to during the race.

And while the times weren't great by your standard, they're pretty darn impressive to us mere mortals!

Curt

OK guys, need some training advice.  I took yesterday off after a hard week / listened to my tired weary body and relaxed.  So that's good / managing to include rest in the routine.

Four weeks from yesterday I've got the sprint event that I've been targeting.  For the bike and run, I'm all set and 110% confident that I can handle them.  I'm even thinking about setting back-to-back PRs and am honestly optimistic that this is realistic.

Now we come to the swim.  I've been going to the pool regularly.  There is absolutely no doubt that my form has improved and that I am 1000 times more comfortable in the water.  Last week I faced the challenge that even though my form felt fine and I felt great, I just could not catch my breath when I tried to go longer than 100m.  I'd like some advice/guidance on how to set up the training for the next four weeks.  One challenge, from 7 July - 12 July, I'll be at a lake in Idaho.  This could be a "bonus" as it'll give me a chance to try out an OWS or two.

Thanks in advance for the help and support!

Curt

Curt,

this is what my swim coach had me do when I was i a similar situations:

1. swim 3x+ a week no matter what!
2. go to your class like normal. The other days do endurance sets. Basically, do 150 kick/150 pull/150free to warm up. Then do 4 sets of 200 with 30-45 seconds rest between and then a cool down. Every week take less time to rest or add another 100 to your sets of 200. Try to get to where you are swimming 4 sets of 400 with 30-45 seconds rest.
3. get out there a couple times to swim OW. Maybe you and I can meet up and go to the lakefront for a swim.

dhopman - 2010-06-27 12:32 PM Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiick ride Brian. God that's sexy. Can't wait to see some more of it.

Pics are up of my course preview: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/photo-thumbnails.asp?albumid=14677&useralbum=180686

Tim - Sorry to hear you didn't do as well as you hoped. It sounds like a BRUTAL course, and I know how hard swimming can be up there. The altitude does make it tough to maintain a normal race pace and the cold water doesn't help I'm sure! Hopefully you have a few chances to train at elevation between now and the Incline Village race.
nice pics Dave!! They started the swim by the dam? There wasn't a rolling current there was there?. That could be dangerous!! I Had 2 friends lose there lives trying to save someone stuck in a rolling current by a damn a few years ago.

The current is pretty slow - but you notice it. It seems far from dangerous. Most places are shallow enough to stand up.

I remember this feeling very well.  Oh, maybe cause it was my last race and is still fresh in my mind. Cry  Ok, seriously, continue with your swim plan, stay drill focused, and take a moment each session to push yourself an extra 25 to 50 yards.  If you can do 100, then next swim force yourself to do 150. You'll find a lot of it is mental.

Also, you might want to try and pull some longer sets.  It will allow you to relax a little more and give you the confidence to work up to longer distances.

Once you find yourself going longer with each set, then you can build your endurance as Brain was illustrating.  Getting a couple OWS is a must once you feel you're ready.  Hopefully, that is before your race
