karbates - 2007-12-21 11:25 AM PS Has anybody seen any cool challenges for January??? I kinda like this challenge stuff, helps motivate

Last year I did challenges Dec-March as I was prepping for a long course tri (1.5x Oly) in mid April and it was fun motivation for training.

Dec 06 Swim

Jan 07 Swim-Run

Feb Bike-Run

March Swim-Bike-Run

See the pattern here!!!

I'm doing an Oly in early April this year and will help out anyone that wants to get them going. I'm going to be busy in Jan so I can't step up and lead, but can help out the the team spreadsheets.

I think I DO see a pattern! I'm thinking that these challenges are perfect - not that any of us here are competitive or anything....

I like the swim run challenge idea for January...and if I can help get that rolling, I will - sheesh that sounded an awful lot like volunteering.

Glad to see this brought up. I was wondering this morning what I was going to do to keep my motivation up. These challenges are great!

That sure sounded like volunteering to me Karen -- alright!!!  I think a swim/run challenge would be great since swimming is my weakest leg and I'm registered for a 20 miler (omg) in late Feb.

Dear Penguins-

I promise to pick up my swimming starting tomorrow and finish the month strong.  Sorry I've been such a slacker this week.

Sincerely, skarl

So I got my first swim in in TOO long this evening, since I've been ill. 1333m, pretty long for me, especially after crashing my bike earlier today haha. I reckon I should be able to meet my goal, hopefully seeing as I'm off school, and will have plenty of time to train

hope everyone elses training is going well!! and merry (nearly) xmas!

Swim-run challenge sounds great! I have already done that a few times because it is easy for me to jump in the pool and then go run on a treadmill. I can't go long in the pool yet, so I still feel like I need to get something else in so I feel good about my workouts.

I feel so yucky. I haven't had many good workouts this week, where I just sweat and feel like I really worked hard. Today is a trainer ride. My GF got me a trainer DVD for xmas. It is a hilarious story. I went and bought her a DVD from the bike shop and told the guy that if my GF comes in, to steer her away from the DVD's. Well, she tells me the other night that she is going to stop into the shop because she has a $30 gift certificate. I just KNEW she would pick out a DVD, so I asked her if she wanted her xmas gift now so that she didn't get the same thing that I got her. So then she went into the bike shop and bought me a different DVD for xmas with her gift certificate. It all worked out good, but it is just really funny!

Off to try out the DVD. It is going to be great to sweat!

Beth (LastCall2003) and I have been discussing a January Challenge.

We're thinking of:

Runners vs. Bikers vs. Swimmers

You'd get to sign up for one category. Competition is between the groups.

I've set up a template spreadsheet, which Beth liked. (She hates spreadsheets.) Things are a bit behind due to work and family problems that we've been dealing with.... But we will probably put up the announcement next week.

Heya guys.

Good news is I now have a good chlorine aroma (do you think anyone would buy that as a perfume or cologne? it could be the first in a series...eu de triathlon) so the pool's smell was back to it's lovely over-chlorinated self.

So I did a tad more than normal. Okay an extra 50 yards, but I swam for my longest continuous. I did 1000 yards in a pathetically slow 27:37 after doing 700 yards of warm up and drills (I'm working on stopping my slight sinking on breathing by doing better rolls with help of the pull buoy and keeping my head facing to the bottom of the pool). Anyway, the distance wasn't bad and I probably could have gone father, but my shoulder was getting sore. And seeing as I was up most of the night at the firehouse (including my favorite type of call...the car accident with no injuries...get to ride fast and blow through red lights but don't have to do any patient care!) I think it went pretty well.

As for my goal, I'm 81% done. I have 2 more swims planned and that will put me over the top for my 15000 yards for the month.

As for next month's challenge, I'd love anything that would let me do running. I have the hardest time motivating myself there since I generally dislike it since it hurts alot, so I can always use that incentive.

I'm off to my grandfather's tomorrow for Christmas. Since he thinks the internet is the spawn of the devil, unless I can find an open wireless connection (but then again most of his neighbors are kinda old so doubting it), I won't be online until I get back on Wednesday.

I hope everyone that celebrates it has a great Christmas and that you find lots of nice tri stuff in your stocking (too bad a bike won't fit in there). I know Santa is bringing me a Garmin 305 so I'm happy. And if you're traveling stay safe.

And most of all, don't kill any annoying relatives. I know it's tempting, but I don't think there are triathlons in jail! Just use the excuse and drink liberally if you are so inclined!

There's some great advice in that ^^^^^^^!

I'm happy to say that it's just me and Ted for the week.  We'll head up to the mountains on xmas for some xc skiing and someone else's cooking -- at a restaurant

We'll open gifts w/ kids at new year's I guess - probably right before our party starts.  Can watch the fireworks from our deck or walk down to ice skate at the lake on new year's eve.

Anyway, tried to make up for a slacker week today -- trainer ride, snowshoe jog/walk and 2500 yd swim.  Only 1000 to go to hit my goal, so next week will be bonus yardage - yay!

Go Penguins!!!

Just 2 more swims and I'll be done, these last 4100 of drills are taking forever! Without this challenge, I'd have bagged it by now.

Happy Holidays!

Hey Terri-

As of Saturday's swim, I was at 11,000 yds for Dec.  Looks like you have me at 8,734 yds.  With today's swim, which won't count til the end of the week, I'm at 12,900.  Unless I'm reading it wrong....

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and training is going well!!

Randy, glad to see you back.

Karen, I've corrected the spreadsheet and it'll show when we report on Monday night.

I've developed a head cold and don't know if I'm going to be able to finish my swims. My left ear was really bothering me at my last swim and I thought it was just from cold water being inside, but now I'm wondering if I was starting to get ill then.

Week 3's team totals are up. We're still not in last place.

Hope you all had a happy Christmas.
