My first sprint is Sunday.  I'm so nervous I can't even begin to THINK about it.
I'll have to get my stuff packed as soon as I get home, just to be ultra-paranoid about it.
GAH!

Lisa --> I just ran my first half-marathon (beginning of May) with my sister.  It was more of a run/walk, really.  Ran first 3 miles, walked a minute (or so), ran 2 miles, walked a minute or so, then walked a little bit after every mile after that.  Really felt pretty good for the most part.  My longest distance up until the race was only 6 or 7 miles, so you don't necessarily have to run a full half-mary to prepare for a half-mary.

I guess the trick is to begin walking BEFORE you get tired.  But you will still want to get your run/walk volume up.  And you will want to do it gradually (I heard that you don't want to increase your volume more than 10% from one week to the next).

I'll ask my sister what website she was getting her info from, so I can either send it to you or just post it here.

Well, I was going to say something inspiring and original.....but, Good Luck!! Kick some butt.

I have a question for you, my fellow swimmers and only group of athletes I currently associate with...LOL..that sort of sounds insulting that I defer to you only because I have to- that's not what I meant!!!...LOL... Anyway, this week when I swam I noticed little broken blood vessels on the inside of my biceps on both arms and around my nose, particulary right in the little divet under my nose. Has anyone every heard of this? What is it? Am I dying??????

I think those are called gin blossoms... you just need to ease up on the liquor before swimming

(I crack me up, sometimesLaughing

I've not heard of that (broken blood vessels from swimming), but I guess it kinda makes sense that you might get some from exertion/ holding your breath... maybe?

Typically on a Sunday afternoon, I am working.  Boring, I know.  But I get Fridays off.  So today I drove down to where my race is being held (in 3 weeks, I can't believe it's that soon!) and checked out the bike and run courses.  Well I got horribly lost with the bike, ended up riding 8 miles anyway, but not at all on the course.  Figured out the run so did another bike to run brick.  And then jumped in the lake, which was quite a bit warmer than I expected.  Now I am second guessing the wetsuit idea.  Already ordered it though, so I guess it's good to have the option.  I also tried out some energy chew things.  Not crazy about the consistency and I needed a lot of water to get them down.  So they might work on the bike, but not the run.

Question:  Do people usually wear anything on their feet during the swim?

After I jumped in the lake today, I walked back toward my car and the beach was these pointy little rocks that were uncomfortable to walk on.  I can't imagine running. And then my feet were all dirty and it was a pain to put my shoes and socks on.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I haven't worn anything on my feet for the only OWS I've had.
BUT... one of the guys that was there WAS wearing what I might call swimming socks.  I couldn't tell if they were neoprene (he was also wearing a wetsuit), but he said he had cut his foot badly on an OWS, and ever since he'd worn <them> he hadn't had any more cuts.  I would guess that they were thicker than regular socks, but I really didn't get a close look at them.

Sorry if all that mess ends up being not very helpful

Footwear after swim- In a race, no time for footwear.  I've never seen people around here use booties or anything like that.  Just run as fast as possible.  Adrenaline will help with those sharp stones.  Wink

I usually have a small towel for brushing off the stuff that gets stuck to my feet.  Getting over being such a princess about my feet has taken me almost 4 years.  You'll get used to it.  I also don't wear socks for the bike, so I don't worry about clean feet too much.  Most of the sand/dirt/grass/pebbles end up in my bike shoes.

Our local lake (pond) just opened so I'm hoping to get in some OWS practice very soon.  Like before my race next weekend.

Thanks Erik for the advice - yes, I should wait an hour after hard liquor before swimming...LOL...No one else has heard of this? I was thinking about whether I hold my breath, and I can't see that I do...sometimes though I blow out all my air and have to wait a stroke to get another breath as I'm still struggling with bilateral breathing...maybe that's the reason -no breath, holding breath, same result?

First one done!

I am pooped out!  Lots of fun.  I filled out my race report, and I think I'm going to go to bed to dream about the race

Edit:  I just re-read my post.  I do NOT want to imply that I was the first one done    simply that I have completed my first triathlon.

Ok, now I'm REALLY off to bed

Great race Erik! What, no photos?! Congrats Diane on the swim meet. I haven't done one of those in over 20 years...but I remember the excitement.

Hope everyone else had a great weekend. I have the day off work, but I'm not sure whether I should take another rest day since I did 5 consecutive days of training/sports last week (well, Friday's game was rained, nay torrential-downpour-with-hail'd out - so that doesn't really count). Anyway, muscles feel a little stiff still, not too bad, but I'm worried about overtraining and not giving time for the muscles to rebuild.

Happy Tuesday, everyone!  It's the last week of class here at school and kind of a mad scramble to the end.  I have an out of town race on Sunday and we're leaving Friday afternoon to drive down.  Yikes!  I have a packing list started.  More frustrating is that I totally wrecked my feet last weekend at the kid's triathlon and it even hurts to walk.  Damm.  I know better than this.  I have a feeling that the run on Sunday is going to be a 30 min pain-filled sufferfest.  Gonna need some HTFU for sure.  Sometimes I'm kind of a dumbazz.

So... theoretically I'm "recovering", and I also have another race this weekend.
Typically, for a sprint, how much recovery do you need to take and/or how much training do you do when recovering AND preparing for a race, simultneously?

I don't want to over-do it, but I also don't want to UNDER-do it, too!
