I was thinking I could do 50 laps for you since Tuesday is my swim day - but that'd be doubling my swim workout which may result in drowning... I'm not ready to walk the plank for you

Ah!  I could commit to doing my core exercises that day - last month I only got my strength/core exercises all done because I was on a challenge team and needed to do it for the team.  Could I do 50 reps?  2 sets of 25?  yeah, maybe.

Though the Oreo idea sounds good too... haven't had them in ages.

Oreos do sound good...maybe we could split the 50 among the 7 of us and each have 7 and then I get the extra one cuz it's my birthday!    Please do not drown on my account. I am glad that you reconsidered that particular option. I'll take the core exercises...and if you have to you could do them for 50 seconds instead of 50 reps!  Just a thought....

Yay! Is your birthday Tuesday the 13th?

I'm going to pledge 50 min of running.

I think it's awesome you don't feel 50! I'm hoping to still be tri'ing at 50.

Yep, Tuesday is the big day! Since the wedding is next week, too, we can't really do a big party that day, so we are going to do that later in the month.  I cannot turn 50 without a party. Just not a good thing.  50 minutes of running....wow, that's good!  I'll be thinking about you while you are running those 50 minutes.

I also got my AARP membership application in the mail this past week. Senior Citizen discounts here I come!!

Sweet! Where are we gonna go first? Waffle House? I must admit that's a favorite indulgence of mine. 2 eggs scrambled, toast, grits, chocolate chip waffle, and a hot chocolate. Mmmm!

Well ... I ran my whole 5K!

EXCEPT that the RD messed up and it was only a 4.26K (2.65 miles)... as announced 20 minutes after we finished.

So much for a USATF event!

Ah well, I ran the length that was offered.  I think it could have had a little better pace if I'd known my distances left.  I slowed to maintain energy at one point but then the finish came up fast... That'll happen then your race course is shorter than advertised.  Mentally I was good.  I did not run all out, still had steam left at the end.

I think I doused a couple volunteers trying to get cups of water.  Ergh.  What's the technique for smooth handoff?  or were they asking for it with 5 ounce cups filled to the brim?  the water was ICE cold too - too cold to drink, first water messed me up.  Second water I dumped on my head instead of drinking, that was better

Great Job...no matter what the distance! When someone can tell me how to do that silly water cup handoff I'd like to know, too.  I never can seem to get the cup right and then trying to drink and run at the same time...never gotten it right once yet! Congrats on running the whole thing!!!

Great job Cynthia ! Sounds like you had a solid race plan, getting people wet is a bonus.

Congrats Cynthia! Bummer about the course being short. And that distance was way off! Ah well...not much anyone can do 20 min after the finish. It's just annoying!

For the cup thing, pinch the top all the way so that your fingers meet with the cup top in between. This forms a "v" that will slow the water down and not allow it to splash everywhere. You can loosen your grip to allow more water flow if needed. You'll still spill a little, but at least be able to drink.

Woohoo! The key word there is "almost." You pushed it hard all the way to the end. I just read your race report. Sounds like a great race!

Had a great time running the 5K yesterday. The whole family participated! My 13 yr old daughter and my husband were running together at the end, but he was bested by her in the last 100 yards. The girl has an incredible kick so she smoked her dad.  I came in about 7 1/2 min after and lowered by best time by 2 minutes. I was pumped about that! The course was something else. There were hills on this thing that were killers! Even the experienced runners commented on them. The most enjoyable part of the day was visiting with Jim Ryun before the race. And, yes, guys, this is THE Jim Ryun who used to hold the world record in the mile. Now, there's an athlete. Bret and I figured he has to be at least 62 years old. He looks incredible. And when he runs it's the same as when he was a world class athlete. He even said the hills were something to deal with. I figure if Jim Ryun thinks they are tough, then it's okay for me to think so, too!  But, I did those hills and passed some people on the way to finishing and that was a huge deal for me, too. I felt great at the end. I think I came in 2nd or 3rd in my age group, but the results haven't been officially posted so I don't know yet. So, I don't know which group they are putting me in (my birthday this year puts me into a new group, you know!) I will let you know once I do. I'm still pondering what I'm going to do 50 of to celebrate my birthday on Tuesday...it'll be good...I've gotten such great ideas from the things you all are gonna do!

Does anyone have any taper tips for me this week? The Oly is in ONE week? AHHHHH

My plan (the BT 2x Oly) only has me doing 2 bricks and one other swim. I really don't want to take 4 rest days. Thoughts?

I stuck to my plan, taper and all,as Elaine suggested. The week goes by fast, gradually build up your carbs before the race, keep yor meal sizes about the same just switch out with more carbs, extra salt would be good, and take it easy, all your training up until your race(3 days before) should be all warmups and relaxed efforts. Sample taper week:

Mon/off

Tue /1600 swim

Wed/15 min run

Thurs/1200 swim/40min bike

Fri/15 min run

Sat/15 min swim with some sprint starts/bike 10min/run 6x100

Friday-Tune up bike and make sure everything is tight and clean

Saturday-lay all gear out and go over race list

Sunday-race(good Luck!)

I like the idea of the 15 min runs, just enough to keep the blood flowing. I am taking the bike into the bike shop on Tuesday for a race check. I don't do that for every race but since this is my A race this season I wanted to have it looked over. :>D Thanks!!

It is amazing to see the shifts in seasons! It's so nice not to have to worry about gloves or layers now. Of course I know I will regret that in a few weeks when it is over 100 everyday. Enjoy that taper time!!

Thanks!  It does feel good even if it was a bit short.  I did think of you all when I slowed my pace to conserve some energy.  It was nice to have you cheering for me

I think some of the other 5K'rs stopped, took a cup, drank, handed empty back, and started to run again.   I grabbed as I went, splashes and all.  The empty-cup-boy at the first water was ~3 yards from the water station - poorly positioned - and had a lot of cleanup to pick up as cups were dropped further along. At least it wasn't windy for him to chase them all.

Congrats on your PR!  (I guess I PR'd my distance
