It's been an interesting week for me, workout schedule all over the place, 4:30 and 5:05 wakeup this week so my sleep schedule is way off. Tuesday I didn't eat lunch had a small meal on the way home, and bonked on the stationary after 30 minutes.  I never bonked ever! it was sucky and scary.  Yesterday, 4:30 am wakeup, work... pool doesn't open until 8:30Pm, In the water at 8:45, I don't know how I'm still awake at this point let alone in the water.

It all ended with my best swim session ever- 4 sets 5X50 (45-50 pace) 30 sec rest, 2M between sets. I know not steller times or distances but still the first time I ever swam that long. I realize that I am still suffering from the same problem my football called me out on in 2nd grade " miller you think too much, stop it!" so i stope thinking relaxed and slowed down and felt really comfortable in the water. Tonight swim lessons at 9! Coach troy when i get home.

what do people tend to do with head colds?  work out through them with heavy cardio?  lay back and do slower shorter distances?  back off completely till it goes away?  coughing, sneezing, congested right now, race in 2 weeks...  lol  gotta love that luck!

I used to back right off when full of the cold but over the last couple of years, have found that the exercise really helps move the infection along.  I back off a little bit and don't push it if finding it tough.

I'm similar in that I continue on with my training, but at a less intense pace. don't put any big expectations on your workouts. I'll cut my short if I'm not feeling right.

And fwiw, sometimes taking time off due to illness is actually a blessing in disguise as your body recovers from the training you've been doing.

"Not stellar times" ??? That's a 1:30 pace per 100y. That's pretty good. And sounds like a solid workout.

I ventured outside today in the 12 degree weather. I know, not exactly the best thing to do when testing out a knee injury. But I was outside. I ran! Walked/jogged really, but it was great. Knee was ok. I'll take that over an eliptical any day of the week. 55 minutes.

so my race is a 400m swim, timed myself for the first time, 5:50(that was 400y)  that seem like a decent time? i imagine race day would only be slower fighting off everybody else that's in the water, but seemed pretty good...

Today was supposed to be a 5 mile "race pace" run.  It was also 4 degrees.  I decided to use my last free day of my trial gym membership to do the run on the treadmill.  I haven't run on a 'mill in years - its still boring.

If its over 10 tomorrow, I'm running outdoors.

That's a VERY decent time. Where is your race - in a pool? lake? Wait...you're in Florida, right? Guess it's open water.

I've found that lap paces don't really equate to race paces. Distances are notorious for being measured incorrectly. Depending on your flip turns, you might actually be gaining time in the pool, or losing it. i just know that your time was pretty good so you'll be in great shape for your race. I think you'll see people closer to 10:00 during the race.

You're not kidding about that boring factor on the dreadmill. I've probably been on it a total of two times over the last few years - and that was after injury.

Other than the boring factor, how did your race pace run go? Felt good?

so finally got out and put my bike and run together with a T2, had to find out if i could finish both, although my bike was 12 mi instead of 10, finished in 1:03:20,  actual run time was 21:35,  was hard to finish, tried to cramp at 2.5 miles, but slowed for a bit and was able to pick up the last short distance to finish...  just felt good to put it together for once

oh and to answer your question walt, the swim will be lake swim, and my 400 was y, race supposed to be meters, but your prolly right about inaccuracies in measuring the distances

i keep wishing for colder weather, but when yall keep talking about 4 and 12 degrees, im not so sure i want what i wish for... lol

Put the treadmill at 3 degrees and right around 8:45/mi.  Was a little slow so I popped the speed up a bit.  I did fine until about 1/2 through when I started playing numbers games and playing with the incline.  At the end I probably could have gone another 1/2 mile or so with no issues and no incline.

One good thing about the 'mill - if your mind wanders, your pace keeps up.  Every once in a while I find myself running at 10/mi and thinking about who-knows-what.

Six miles outside tomorrow, I hope

After a slow start to the week, finished pretty well.  Did kettlebells this morning followed by 3 miles on the treadmill.  Boredom mitigated by a friend on the machine next to me.  Of course, that led to a post workout trip to the diner where we undid the entire morning's caloric burn.  All in all, a nice Saturday morning.

Greasy hashbrowns.  Yum.  Now off to the gym to make up for yesterday's bad behavior.

I was good today. I got up early(ish) even though it was snowing and ran for an hour. Just slow and with walk breaks because of the knee. But it felt awesome to be out there with the snow crunching under my feet, and my mind wandering to thing other than the day-to-day BS that goes on. No work tomorrow - will be cycling - hoping the snow clears enough so I can get outside.

Oh yeah...I forgot...I'm going to get me some bacon & eggs now!!

Whew!  What a week.  that was not one I want to repeat ever again.  Monday it snowed and we got the car stuck in the yard.  Yes, the yard.  I slid off the driveway into a snow bank.  Took 3 hours to get it out and then we had to pull it with the tractor.  The rope we used to pull it then was frozen and stuck to the tow ring.  Tuesday I drove around with a rope hanging off my car.

Tuesday was a mess and I had to shovel off the ROAD at our intersection in order to get to work.  Then I found that I had pulled something in my leg, probably while crawling under the car to shovel it out the night before.  Tuesday night our oldest horse came in with a 3" gash over his eye.  Of course it needed stitches.  On one of the coldest nights in 14 years, we waited for the vet.  5 stitches, 3 shots of tranq and 1 very drunk horse.  We were up most of the night with that.

I took Wednesday off.  I had left detailed sub plans and figured that my students wouldn't mind.  Then we got the cold snap that closed school for 2 days.  Yes, they close schools here in MN for cold.  Seems that -20* (without wind) is the cut point for closing school.

Of course I did no training while I was sitting at home.  Now it's snowing, again.  Cabin fever anyone?

Surgery went well.  The pain is already going down a little (although I am still pretty drugged up) and my shoulder already feels more stable.  Now the incision hurts instead of the actual bone/break site and my shoulder no longer droops several inches!! Now its time for a week off of sleep and movie watching... I'm already bored.

Keep up the great training everyone.

Glad to hear all is OK in MN.  You went "radio silent."  What a week you've had!!!  The weather in NJ is cold, but nothing compared to what you've had in the midwest.   BTW, why do horses ALWAYS cut themselves/go lame/colic etc on the coldest or most miserable days of the year?

Question about HR training.  I know my max (223) and therefore Zone 3 for running is approx 154 - 176.  Right now I'm keeping my running exclusively in Zone 3. How do I adjust for the bike and swim?  Do I drop each end of the range by 10bpm for bike and 20bpm for swim?  For that matter, should I even worry about HR during bike and swim?

How awful, can't really get my head around how cold that is, it once got down to 0.5C here and it was on the front page of the newspaper.  Hope your horse has sobered up and is doing well.
