Hi Everyone,

Sorry I disappeared... Work and life has been crazy.  Good to see the chatter around here!  I am on facebook as well: Pam Crear.  I'm working on some quick ways to keep our nutrition simple and will start a discussion on that soon.

As for working out... with my work schedule not being solid, I workout when I have time.  Today I didn't get done till almost 8pm.  I have been at the gym at 5 am before.  It really is random.

Well I am off to bed so I can get up for one more day shift tomorrow. Need to rest up because I am going to have a busy few days!

Facebook as well - Lisa Luff

I'm an early riser in order to get my youngest off to school and me to work, can't seem to get an early workout in during the week. I do get up early on the weekend and really enjoy my morning runs, more so than the evening when I'm tired.

Hope everyone is on the mend!

My 10 year old and husband are at the movies. I hate to go the movies, I can't sit still for that long and it's like sensory overload to me, way to loud. I very seldom even watch a movie at home because if I sit still long enough to watch it, I generally fall asleep.  But, I just came from the book store with a new journal (I still keep a hard copy even though I log here) that has a place for cardiovascular training, strength training, flexibility and nutritional intake; The Complete Book of Food Counts; and was really excited to find Jayne Williams' newest book Shape Up with the Slow Fat Triathlete! So, since I've a got a couple of hours of "me-time" before the crew arrives back home, guess I'll get started!

Have a Safe and Happy New Years! and may we all make our planned goals for the year! (which reminds me, I've still got to get those posted!)

 Lisa

Lisa!!  I am so happy you filled us in.  I have been in e-mail contact with Jayne for about three years and I knew she was working on a new book but had no idea when that book was coming out.  That is the first thing I am doing in the new year!  Anyone who hasn't read Jayne's book Slow Fat Triathlete should.  It is so inspirational!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Happy New Year everyone!  My new year always starts out with a bike ride.  I'm meeting my regulars at 10:00 today (we're sleeping in this morning).  How about you?

Hi gang...

I thought I would share with you a recipe for Quinoa-Couscous Cereal. This cereal is slightly sweet and extremely filling:

1 1/2 cups unsweetened apple juice
1 cup water
1/2 cup quinoa
2 tbsp dried cranberries
2 tbsp dried blueberries
2 tbsp chopped dried apricots
2 tbsp raisins
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground allspice
1/2 cup couscous
1/4 cup soy milk, or nonfat milk

1. In a medium saucepan combine the apple juice & water. Bring to a simmer over med. heat.

2. Rinse and drain the quinoa in a fine mesh strainer. Heat a medium saute pan over med. heat; add the quinoa & toast, stirring constantly, until grains begin popping (2-3 min.).

3. Add the quinoa, dried fruits & spices to the liquid in the saucepan. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the quinoa is clear and soft, 12-15 min. Stir in the couscous. Remove pot from heat & cover with a lid. Let stand until the couscous has absorbed the liquid and is fluffy, 5-7 min.

4. Serve with milk on top.

This can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge. Good hot or cold.

Serves 6.

Nutrition per serving: 184 cal., 6% fat (1 g), 85 % carb. (40 g), 9% protein (4g), 2.5 g fibre, 31 mg calcium, 2 mg iron, 12 mg sodium.

Quinoa has more protein than any other grain. It is also a good source of fibre, magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium, vitamin E and several B vitamins.

I usually double the recipe and keep it in the fridge. If I am running late in the morning, I just put some in a container and reheat when I get to work.

I thought since a lot of us are wanting to watch what we eat and maybe lose a few pounds, maybe we can exchange favourite recipes. Anyone have a low cal. favourite?

I have collected quite a few over the years. If you guys like, I will post some of them from time to time.

Woke up very tired this morning, but it's a happy kind of tired -- I stayed up late to watch my team win the Orange Bowl (GO TECH GO!).    How does everyone feel about training when you are tired?  I was tempted to turn off the alarm and put off running until later in the day, but I have a full day and I knew I'd just blow off running altogether, so I rolled out of bed and trudged through my run.

The question is -- do you feel like you still get benefit from the workout, even though your heart isn't 100% into it?  I feel like I get some benefit, even if it's just mental.  I'm not going to be 100% at every race, so hopefully I'm training myself to slug through the down times.

Wish I could go take a nap, but I think they expect me to be somewhat productive at work today.

You get more than you know out of it, it is preparing your mental toughness for the races. As long as it's a I just feel lazy tired, and not a I feel like I'm getting sick tired.
Good job getting out of bed today to run!

How did you feel when you were done?  Sometimes, when I'm tired and lack motivation, I feel that much better about getting out and getting it done, since it was that much more of a challenge.  Way to go!

So how is everyone doing so far? How is everyones training going? If you are brand new to triathlon and have any issues let us know, if we can't help you ourselves we will be glad to find the information to help you.
Just remember to do something on your training days ie: walk, classes, weights, run, swim, bike...and also remember that it is hard at first because everything is new to your body, don't get overwhelmed...take your time and get used to the feel or the water, road or bike...IT WILL COME IN TIME!!!!!

Looking back two years ago I think the best advice I can give is to go the distance at whatever speed, you don't have to be "fast", you just have to put the time in.

Happy Training!!!!
