anyone have any idea what the water temp is around?  based on the past few years i'm going with the assumption wetsuits aren't going to be allowed

Others have stated that water temp is normally 78-81 and that there is virtually no chance that the race will be wet-suit legal...but I'm still holding out hope.

As long as we are throwing out a bunch of questions, I have another one.  Can someone, probably Cube, explain how the bottle exchange works logistically?  I was reading the athlete's guide, and it specifically said there were only 2 dumping spots, at the beginning and end of the stations, and any dumping of old bottles outside of these areas results in penalty or DQ.  How big are the water/aid stations?  Any tips on making the transfer as easy as possible? Thanks

The dumping area is just that, a spot just before and/or just after the aid station where you literally litter...lol
You see your coming up on an aid station, grab your empty bottle and throw it in the mass of bottle on the ground off to the side, before and after the station.
They have you do that so its easy for them to collect/dispose of trash.
Drop an empty, slow down grab a new from a volunteer, be on your blissful way.

Per luckyslake webpage the water temp there is  76.5 at 6:30am on 4/25/09.  I would say you have a better chance of winning the lottery! lol

Hey everyone!!!
My name is Clair and I am from New York.  The Florida half ironman is my first triathlon ever and I am obviously extremely nervous about it.  I have been reading everyone's posts in order to better prepare myself for race day. I have many questions and hope you guys can help.  The first one is whether or not I should ship my road bike down to Florida or rent one down there.  I have actually been training with a friends so I don't think it would be much of a difference-any thoughts?

My experience...ship your bike.  I have to assume it's the one you've trained on, so that's the one to use.  You need to focus on race day...not some rented, maybe OK, might work bike!

Hope you have a great race!

hi claire

i'm from ny also, i'm shipping my bike down. i know it's expensive, but i think it's worth it. it's the one i've been training on. i figure if i rent one i would need it for a couple of days to train on. and i don't want to be learning on a new bike before the BIG race.

YES!!!..Ship the bike. Do you practice with one race car, only to drive another in the race?
Its all about feel and confidence.
Enjoy your time in FLA. Its a great race, remember to enjoy it, cheer on your fellow race mates, thank the volunteers and soak it all in.

Yup, Cube said it right!  It's about the moment.  Obviously, none of us are "Pros," so have fun, focus on your race, and enjoy, soak-in, and relish the rush.  The rush is THE best high IMO.  I love the start.  I'm not the greatest swimmer in the world; who cares?  It's about the time you have put time in for this day...it's a freakin' rush to be in that moment.  It's what has made TRI what it is.  Not just the start, but the experience.  Everyone does the same race but climbs a different mountain.  I'll be selfish and say, I hope it never gets too big.  I love it all.  Everything from my local sprint to the 70.3!  Ok, now I'm pumped...AGAIN!  Sorry, I'll climb down from my high.  Love it!  Damn...can't wait!

BTW:  Thanks again Cube for all your great inputs.  Very helpful...have a great race.

Ive never shipped the bike, But these guys are the biggest. They have a big tent right next to transision where you p/u the bike the day before the race. Then you return it there after your finished on race day. I believe you get to ship one gear bag along with the bike?

I am using TriBike.  You reserve through Active.com, with a $17 fee from them, and I think the total cost was $267.  I was going to have to buy or rent a case, pay the extra $50 each way on the plan, then rent a larger SUV to take everything around.  Now all I have to do is drop my bike off at my LBS next Saturday and it will be in transition on the Sat before the race.  Then I just drop it off at the tent at the race and it's home in a couple of days.  Worth every penny if you ask me.

depending on where in live in NY. i live on long island and i am shipping my by tribike. i drop it off at the local shop and pick up in transition. no fuss no muss. there is a list on tribike.com where u can drop off ur bike depending on your location. you can also ship a small bag, put ur helmet, shoes and other stuff in. the bike shops are very help to get it prepared for shipping.
for the swim i bought the swim safe thing u see on this website. it's legal. just in case i panic or something happens. it's my 1st long ows and i just want to be prepared for anything.

Thanks Erin, I will be sure to check out the bike info. I was curious about the swim safe thing youmentioned.  What is it exactly? Swimming is my weakest sport

I'm using TriBikeTransport, too.  I think it was $25 to ship a bag with them also...which I'm planning to send my tri bag/helmet/bike shoes, etc., in.

the swim safe is found on triads.com it's an inflatable help that u strap to ur waist. it's leagal to use. once inflated u can't keep it with you. however it's just for my mental wellbeing that i know if i get into trouble that i can inflate it and be safe. i've only done an open water swim as practice never during a race and i am a bit nervous. i know that deal of standing in the back of my wave, on the side and all the workings of it, just never did one.

the bike info is tribiketransport.com
