I can do everything but the swimming as my town doesn't have an indoor pool. Can dry land drills count?

Alright! Lovin' the energy. You can sub whatever you want for your swim. I completely understand about the no pool thing.

Hey thanks for the encouragement, Amyleigh and Amykmo. I definitely think all the time that I want to maximize the impact of my time with my daughter, because it is so short and time really flies! It seems the best way to do that is to be yourself, which for me means being active and goal-oriented.

LOL! You can join my daughter. Just today she was demonstrating breaststroke on our carpet and it was so funny to watch. Regarding the IM - I'll join you gals in spirit. I'd have to count my PT time toward the swim and I don't think that's what the challenge had in mind!

We can start yesterday or we can give ourselves a few days to gear up for it and start next Monday. Thoughts?

I'm up for the challange. I just have to figure out how to compute my spinning class, bike trainer, and swimming into actual mileage instead of "time".  I would like to start yesterday but next week works too.

Marcy...I can tell that you are a dedicated Mom and athelete.  Doing what makes you a better, stronger person will always reflect back well on your daughter.

OK, let's go ahead and start on Monday and since we'll be so close to the end of the month, let's just take it all the way through the end of February.

Hey Karen,

I was reading all the posts about the trainerfest on Feb. 14th.  I would love to do something like that...I think.  I don't really get what it is.  You all go to someone's house with your bikes and trainers???  All day?  All weekend?  I only see my hubby on weekends so I don't think I can devote an entire weekend for something like this.

Most importanty.......Is there food involved????  Ha ha....please enlighten me.  I would love to meet some triathletes from Michigan!!

Thanks.  Jeri

Yes we bring our bike, trainer, a towel and food to share. It's so much fun. Usually they go from 9:00-12:00. People do not usually ride the entire 3 hrs. Some share the space with another if space is limited. The trainerfest on Feb 14th still has some spots open. You should sign up and come on out and ride and eat with us. You would feel very welcome. My husband and I have met so many nice people doing this. I hope to see you there.

Karen

No need to ask for forgiveness. That's a TERRIFIC question. Bricks are when you do one discipline directly after another. It's within a few minutes of each other, and it's typically a bike and then a run.

So, if you go out for a bike ride, come back in and change your clothes quickly and head out the door immediately for a run, you're doing a brick.

It's a hotly debated topic on whether they're necessary or not for training, but I'm in the camp that they are. They get you used to how your body will feel on race day. Then, if you do believe they're necessary, there's another debate on how far you need to run, but typically it's just 2-3 miles.

I hope that helps!

Hey I am with Lora on the brick thing -  I think doing them really prepares your body for what it feels like in a race, and the more you do, the easier it gets (tree trunk legs just a little shorter).   I know a guy who every time he bikes he goes for a run, even just 1/2 mile.  I don't do that, but I think that doing a few during training definitely helps.

This sounds great. How often should I do it to start? Once or twice a week and then build up?

That's a really great question, Pat. Practicing bricks really becomes a matter of personal preference. I'll go weeks without doing one and then maybe do a couple a couple weeks out from a race. Sometimes, when I train doing two disciplines a day, I'll schedule my run immediately after my bike, so that may be once a month.

I would just start off trying one and see what it's like for you. At that point, you can gauge how you'd like to proceed as far as frequency.

For the training challenge, do we post what we did here or just log it in our journals?

I'm in on the challenge. I think my masters swim starts tonight. If not, well - I need to get my butt in the pool anyways.

I totally agree that bricks are a must.  I have a really hard time transitioning from the bike to run (biking is my sport so I think that I push it too hard and then bonk on the run), so bricks help me understand what it's going to feel like that first mile or so.  Not that it's necessarily helped me, but one of my goals this year is to not bonk so much on the run.

Great question. Definitely post it in your training log. Let's also post the past week's events on Sunday nights in this forum.
