TJ, at the risk of asking a stupid question, is this definitely looking like a 2011 race, or was there any discussion that would indicate it wouldn't be until 2012?

Bring the heat baby! I've been doing rides and runs in 90+ heat, so Memorial Day shouldn't be to much of a problem for those of us that are acclimated to the heat. Don't get me wrong, it will be brutal just the same, but hey, us locals will get to sleep in our own beds that night!!

Lemme see here...isn't the first step to recovery admitting that you have a problem? Here goes...

I am 264 pounds, which is 44 pounds over my IMCDA weight from 2006
I have not actually swam, biked, or run "with a purpose" for a long time (longer than I can remember, actually)
I have not swam at all since February of 2009

Yet, despite all this, I am extremely excited and actually WANT to get back into training now.  As a good friend just told me 5 minutes ago...I now have a carrot in front of me; training and eating now have a purpose.

I see lots and lots of carrots in my future.

10lbs heavier than my first IM weight in 2005.
Haven't trained on my bike regularly in almost 5 years.
Haven't tri trained in 5 years.
Have a broken leg, haven't walked since late March.

Smart training, losing weight and healthy eating are on the top of my list!

The trick now is to actually get registered when it opens.  My guess is a FASSSST sell-out

You don't want to be like the other dummies and do have less than a year to start training after many years off? Good thing there's an "almost."

And thanks a million for all the great info.

First the 2011/2012 question. Definitely next year. That was the whole scheduling issue to begin with. Marriot waterway is booked on the dates they originally wanted next year, but wide open the following years. So this date could change by next year. Also, Gov of this type typically don't approve budget items a year in advance. They would wait until the current year budget is set and then allocate from there. They actually discussed this on another topic (I think it was a park maintenance contract) that they couldn't say there was money for the contract before the budget was out, even though it was obvious that it would be allocated. anyway...

The date may be my mistake. To my recollection they didn't specify a date, they just said 3rd Saturday or Weekend or whatever. On my way out I was talking with the Memorial Hermann COO and rep and he vaguely referenced Memorial Weekend. The other little piece of this that made me think Memorial weekend was another discussion that I can't dilvulge on this board. (You would be utterly shocked how many people are following this thread).

May 21st would be better in my opinion. Hope I'm wrong.

Thanks for the clarification.  Third weekend is definitely the 21st, so hopefully that is correct!

TJ,

In reference to the sellout in 90 minutes quote, had they discussed in-person registration for the locals (or those that want to travel to the site to sign up in person) followed by an on line or will it be just on line?

Do you expect it to sell out that quickly? It seems first year races are taking longer to fill as the amount of races grows. Even established races like Penticton and CdA are taking longer than they have in the past. Granted Houston is going to pull from Austin, Dallas, San Antonio etc so you might be right.

Either way, I hope it happens. And I hope someone dumps a ton of ice in the lake May 20th.

I was actually misquoted. I said "races have sold out in as fast as 90 minutes". Either way, Our region is one of, if not the most populated areas of triathletes. The TX crowd could fill it in a matter of minutes by themselves, let alone the rest of the country/world. I think people from the north will be a little scared of the potential heat and weak swimmers will be scared of the non wetsuit swim, but I still think it will go quickly. I doubt there will be any 'in person' sign up as that could be a mess. I am guessing that it will all be online 1st year and then fall in line with the protocol that Ironman has in place with those at the race getting first stab.

Your gonna need a sh*t load of ice. By Ironman standards, CB&I wouldn't be wetsuit legal most years. What you need is a week of rain prior to race day..maybe.

This is extincting and interesting.
I did Ironman Arizona in April 2008 where the heat stress index hit 107 and there was I think, a 20+% attrition rate. The key to surviving that race was to be conservative in your race plan and consume as much as electrolyte drink as possible. We also had killer winds on the bike which added to the misery.

I have IM AZ this coming November and if I count right IM Woody is 6 month to the day later in 2011. If my fingers are fast enough will be there.

Now I have to look at my racing schedule I had laid out for Spring 2011 and see which Half I have to cut out.

Good Luck everyone.
