Shawn, hope the Advil worked.

I have heard people ask when they should skip a workout it they are sick. The most common response is, Any thing above the shoulders you can workout, below the shoulders and you should skip. You know how you feel and if you feel you need to skip a workout, sksip it.

When I was new to triathlon (about 8-9 years ago) and living in south Florida we did a cruise/triathlon in the bahamas.  Scott Tinley, Dave Molina, and Dave Scott ( the early gods of the Ironman) were all guests on the cruise.  Got to hang out with them and race with them in the beautiful islands.  A great trip.

First workout day of the plan had a 30 minute run, 40 minutes on the bike trainer doing individual leg drills at high cadence, and a core workout.  That's just mean!  But I got it all done.

Tomorrow's challenge may be getting out of bed.

Are you doing one workout of just drills?  My swim workout is something like this:

Warm up, drills, main set, cool down.  Main set could be 25, 50, 100 or longer, I like to change it around. The 25 and 50 are going to be a lot faster. Some days I may skip the drill and just do long repeats. I like to use the back stroke for my cool down.
One drill I like to use is the one-arm, I like to do it with fins. If your hand tends to sink, you could kick on your side with one arm extended.

Short run this morning (temp was -6F) followed by bike on the trainer. Planning on getting a CC ski in tonight, trails should be improving since we are getting more snow.

Got another run in this afternoon, even though I really wanted to take the day off due to some tight hamstrings and gluts due to the lunges yesterday.  Getting back in the swing of training everyday, nice to see three days in a row of training the log.

Hope everyone is having a great day.

Lenny, sorry to see the -6F temp for a run.  Not much fun in that, but at least you are getting out and getting some training in.

Happy New Year!

Just finished perusing several pages and was excited to see how much we've "grown". I will have to try Eric's suggestion of getting updates through e-mail so I can stay current. Thought I'd add a couple specifics:

Wes: Not sure if you are still looking for a HIM plan but I used the one in "The Women Triathlete" which is edited by Christina Gandolfo. I'm not sure the plan is any better than the ones offered by BT but I found it and much of the advice in the book very useful. The womanly comments mostly reside in the chapter on training through pregnancy and gender specific equipment issues.

Brad and Serendpity: Glad there are other parents of teens here. The long workouts really do make shepherding this very special "breed" a little easier. Brad, really glad to see there is someone else training for IM Moo . Let me know if I can help with any questions about Madison.

Cheers,
Merriann

Thanks Merriann, I will do. Just got a 35 minute run/shuffle in the 20 degree snow cover hilly terrain.  Was a great run Knee felt good and I am excited about it.  35 minutes of running with no pain is a blessing. Hope everyone is feeling better. I go on call Friday so I will get my training in where I can.

Today's workout didn't happen until late but I got my 50 minute run in before bed.  Whew.  Afraid I was going to blow it on January 5th but I decided to suck it up and get on the treadmill.

Got my first swim workout in for the season, starting to get back in the grove of training and actually feeling like a triathlete again.

Hope everyone gets some training in.

During the 2 1/2 months I took off from training after last season I never slept through the night.  The last two nights, after starting back to training, I've slept like a rock.  Ironic that I have to work harder to feel more rested.  Anyone else notice that?

Good for you!

I miss swim workouts, but none for me until the lake melts.  We don't have a pool  around here.  Frown

Nice job getting the training in. I hope being the the group makes it harder to blow off a workout.

I did a ski last night. I was in bed by 9:30 and still overslept. Woke up at 5, so only had time for a short run. So that must work.

Nice job getting in the pool. I feel guilty, I haven't been in the pool for a while.

Had first swim lesson last night, really starting with the basics and fundamentals. It went ok, I think. Need to find practice time. Hope everyone is doing well.

I have a pool only 1/2 mile from my house, but it is only two lanes.  I have to get there early before the "pool walkers" take over.

You don't have to wait until the ice melts, you could cut a lane out of the ice and take a swim that way.  Don't they do that kind of thing where you are at, polar bear club or something like that?

Thanks, it was only 800 meters total, but I could definitely tell it has been a while.  Need to get back up to the 1500m M/S workouts and longer, those will be fun in the 25m pool (back and forth, back and forth).

Ok, I know this isn't tri related but I just found out they lowered the FICA rate. Guess I don't watch the news enough.

Not sure when the last time the rate changed but must be over 20 years. And then to make it more complicated, the employers rate didn't change only the employee rate went down 2%.

Ok, just had to rant a little.

This is one major benefit of regular exercise for me... I sleep so much better. The problem is I probably do not get enough sleep during the week. I try to get to bed by 9:30 but typically I am falling asleep to the 10pm new. My alarm goes off at 4:15am.. By Thursday I am wanting to hit the snooze more than once but in order to get my work outs in I have to be up.. I get to sleep in on the weekends... until 6:30am!!! I so look forward to Saturday mornings!

WOW!!  I did laps today at the Y--I have a lot of work to do.  I am a "usta" person.  "Usta" swim fast laps, "usta" run fast and "usta" bike all day.  Looking to change all that in the next few months!

What's best?  I have the 22-week training plan and on most days you do 2 of the disciplines.  I don't think I have time to go to the gym 2X a day.  What do you guys do? What is the best ?

Teri

p.s. I love Colorado--sunny and 55 degrees today, and 55 is a nice and warm day here. but, may get buried in snow this weekend.
