alath - 2011-01-16 10:17 AMDana & Ed, thanks for the welcome!

Ed, I am in Carmel IN. It is a North Indy suburb.
I see you are living in Chicago/NWI area. I lived in the Medical District in Chicago from 1998 to 2002.
Ahh cool. I'm doing the Indy half marathon in may. Hoping for good weather. I went to Purdue for 2 years and m folks have a place in Monticello so I spend a fair amount of time in your rough neighborhood. Also, sorry I missed but welcome Katie!

Subject: RE: IronAnneKidd's Mentor Group - Open for business!
Well it says this group is still open and I think will be a good fit  I am Cheryl if y'all will have me!

FAMILY: I am 48 single, unemployed, living with my eldest DD her DH a 17yr DD 10yr DD and 7yr DS between the 17yr DD and eldst DD are 5 more plus 5 grands. I take care of the household and homeschool the two youngest. I am hoping we can make it work so that I can go to school come Fall when I will be elegable for instate tuition.

HISTORY: I was never an athlete and for most of my adult life always though I was lazy turned out that I had myriad health problems undiagnosed. I finally got somehealth indurance and Drs that listened to me instead of condencending. I was diagnose with multiple allergies sleep apnea and adanomyosis. After surgery to resolve the most debilitating issue I determined to do someting I had wanted to do for years a triathlon I began one week post surgery with walking adding the bike then the swim as the Dr cleared me. I got a job on night shift at a WalMart and trained by comutting on bike running on  lunch and swimming as often as I could make it to a pool! (I love to swim!) I was also during this time diagnose with exxcersize induced asthma. A year after the surgery in 2009 I raced my first sprint tri followed that year by two more. Then winter hit hard and I was ill by Christmas remaining ill for months I did not workout anymore and did not even realize how long and often I had been sick as I just kept going to work and pushing though it. Friends got on me about it but I could not afford to go to a Dr! So I research as much as I could and dropped gluten from my diet, I have a DD with Celiac so it was not just a shot in the dark The change has been amazing. Other life circumstances kept me out of triathlons for 2010 so I really want back in for 2011!

TRAINING: I had started training late Nov. early Dec. I joined a challenge on a local list serve to run/walk 2 mile daily in Dec. I should have walked it. I had only done 13 miles the week before but I ended up with an over training injury to my right foot. I have high arches and a neutral stride no pronating no supinating and a midfoot strike. The ankles however are weak and the arch was collapsing and stressing ligaments at first we though it was a stress fracture! I am cleared to start again but taking it slower till I gain strength to support running. I have not cycled either nor swam as I am not a member at any pool as of yet. As a result I put back on 10 of the 15 pounds I had lost in Nov.

EVENTS: I want to do the Tri Tucson Series three sprints, one international length Tri, the Mount Lemmon Marathon, either the half or whole and Rock & Roll Pheonix

katieduffy - 2011-01-15 11:56 AM Hi guys, do you still have spaces?

Here's my deal:

36, married mom to 1, tri virgin

Background: completed 1 marathon and lots of other shorter distance races including several halfs, 2010 = year of the overuse injury, totally craptastic, couldn't run for three months this fall and missed my second NYC marathon, started cross training instead on dr's orders

Progression: Crosstraining = swimming & cycling = "hmmm, triathlon is cool"= lots of books = I've paid up for my first entry, a mini on 4/23/11, yay! Saving for a bike (I currently use the spin bikes at my Y and have a decent cannondale MTB, need an entry level road bike).

2011 goals: I want to do several sprints in addition to a few shorter distance road races, mostly 5k to 10k. Since I'm a slow fat athlete, I'd like to get faster and thinner Laughing I'd like to complete 1 olympic distance event this year but haven't picked it yet. In any case it'll be late August at the earliest.

OK, off to the Y and maybe Trader Joe's... good to meetcha!

welcome Katie

Btw, John, never thanked you for the offer on the Tri-shark so ...thanks! I'm likely to have my kids that weekend so im looking into lodging for all of us close to the race but appreciate the offer. So, what does everyone have in tap for today? I'm hoping to get a 5 mile run in on the treadmill, too slick outside at the moment, and some resistance work in.

jsoza - 2011-01-17 7:18 AM good morning everyone.....I think I am almost over my head cold

Actually had to change teachers due to a scheduling issue. My wife and I had our first lesson with the new lady. She is great.

Going in, I had identified three problems with my swimming - overgliding, unilateral breathing, and scissor kicking. I hadn't been able to progress on any of these. Today with the help of my new teacher I was able to slay all three of these beasts in one day.

There's a website that I have found super helpful. Check this out:
http://www.swimsmooth.com/
For whatever reason, I always have to reload this page to make the animation play right. It does show what a perfectly coordinated swimmer is supposed to look like. So far I have still needed a swim teacher to help me correct my problems, but these videos really have helped me identify my problems.

Hello everyone!

Welcome Cheryl!!!

Sorry I'm so late checking in the morning. I have the day off work and I got to sleep in (which with having 2 kids and 3 dogs I never get to do!)!!! I got to do some reading this morning, then I went to the college where my husband works and played basketball with my 2 kiddos for 2 hours. They're tough!

Ok last week we were working on running, which I'll admit I did poorly at. After a 2 1/2 month layoff I'm nervous to start up again, and it's cold outside.

This week let's focus on cycling. I have a trainer in my basement and I'm going to try to get on the thing at least 4 times by next Sunday!

Anthony - what a cool site, I bookmarked it and am unduly fascinated by the little swimmer guy

Cheryl - welcome! Sounds like you persevered through a lot. I admire your toughness!

OK, bike focus it is. I got in some time at my Y today. I don't have a trainer. Actually, I'm saving for a road bike, LOL! My MTB did fine until the snow came... by the time it goes away for good I'll have sweet new wheels.

Since I have 2 10Ks and a half marathon coming up before my triathlon, I will keep focusing on running. I ran for 45 minutes on the treadmill at the gym this morning. My daughter and I are getting ready to go play tennis. She just started taking lessons last week so it won't be a whole lot of exercise. But, the sun is out after days of hiding! It just started to peak out so I'm excited to go outside! We might even do a short bike ride together.

I was looking at races this am keeping all close to home as usual to save on costs. DD is helping me this year and I hate to ask for too much. I emailed a calendar and she email back "what, I like traveling! " So woo hoo I have a 6 hour drive radius to work in now! That opens up a lot of possibilities...

Good morning everyone!

We got 3 inches of snow last night, and right now we are getting freezing rain on top of that so I'm home again today.

I need you guys to send healing juju to my friend Amy. She went out for a bike ride yesterday and crashed, she broke her humerous. She was going to run a half marathon next Sunday, that isn't happening now.

Morning all!  I fell off the grid over the weekend, intentionally disconnecting for some peace and quiet, some I'm just catching up.

Welcome to Katie, Anthony and Cheryl!  Glad to have you on the "team"!  Postive vibes and good healing karma to Amy!  Hoping for a speedy recovery for her!  John, get over your head cold soon!

Tough weekend, from a workout perspective, due to lots of swelling in the knee.  I'm thinking it might be time to go back to the ortho to see what's up.  (I'm avoiding this b/c I really don't want to know.)  Have an appt with a new chiro tomorrow, so I'm going to start there.

Hope everyone's workouts are on track and that everyone is staying healthy.

I completely understand the avoiding the doctor thing, but you really should go. If you are having swelling something is wrong. This is one of those better safe than sorry scenarios.
