I can only spend about $300-$400 to start with (btw, my mountain bike got dusted off and down and is pretty junked out, but if I get desperate I will be using it.) I have visited most of the LBS and I found one that I love, so that is who I will go with. I have been looking at the black market (aka craigslist) and ebay and I have some ideas. I have figured out size for sure, but I am still lost on lots of other stuff. I found a bike on ebay that I like, seems like a good starter, but it is a brand I have never heard of (dawes?) Also, it says 14 gears, and most I have seen have 21? I know it seems risky buying a bike I've never seen before, but what I am most afraid of is taking in to get fitted and having them laugh at my bike! Is it tacky to include the ebay link and see what you guys think? If so, please ignore link.....If not, whadya guys think? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150548273922&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en NM...I tried to hyper link it, but for some reason it did not work. Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the advise, but I was feeling okay so I knocked off 10 miles on the treadmill. I'll probably limit my miles for the rest of the week and do 11 on Saturday. If my legs recover okay. Edited by nmroach 2011-01-25 6:39 PM |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's already 25° here! I haven't made it up at 5 for two days now, but I didn't feel well so I was told I had to sleep. But I feel a little better today, and it's warming up nicely, so I WILL go running outside before work this morning, and probably make up a missed swim workout after work tonight. I've loved spinning the last few weeks, and it's gotten better now. All of the instructors were recertified over the weekend, so they came back to class explaining that they had not been teaching correctly, and would now be teaching in ways that will make the class more consistent with a real bike workout. I thought my legs burned before! No more standing sprints, no more 'popcorn' (jumps that are faster than 4 beats), no doing things without hands, and more reminders of proper pedaling technique are some of the biggest changes. |

I get irritated after 2, it's a good day if I can make it to 5! I'd rather just put on my Hannibal Lecter mask and head outside. |

For my first marathon, some 8 years ago, I didn't have access to a treadmill so all miles were run outside. But I have gotten used to the treadmill. As long as I have my iPod full of good music. |

I feel the same way! Way to be! I miss running....about 3 more weeks and I can run again (I have a lame-o stress fracture.) Had to cancel not one, but two races. $100 I'll never see again. |

I wish I could help, but I know of no "magic" drug. I did use the new Advil congestion medicine a few weeks back for a head cold that I had. It worked relatively well. Anyway, good luck and get well, Soon. |

![]() | ![]() You'll get the same benefit of Advil Congestion by using a decongestant and NSAID, but for much less $. Also, I tend to find that when I have a cold, swimming helps. Or at least, it helps my head drain all the snot out of it. |

Just found a benefit in OWS- can't see the snot floaters. I am actually less snotty and more chest congestion/tightness. Such a bummer. Hope to make it for a quick swim tomorrow anyway.... |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A swim is definitely on my to do list for the day, I'm thinking right before spinning unless I get so bored with my day off that I really feel the need to go to the gym more than once today... |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anyone got any advice for dealing with shin splints? Left shin toward the outside was killing me today. I always battle them to some extent but this time around is not fun at all. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() For shin splints...rest, ice, NSAID. For icing shins, I like to freeze water in a small paper cup with a popscicle stick in it. The small cups like one would use in the bathroom work great, since they're so small you don't have too much ice, and they also freeze pretty quickly. You can put plastic wrap over the top of the cup, then cut a small hole and put the stick in, and the plastic wrap will support the stick until it freezes. Then you can just peel the paper off, and you have a handle to use while icing the shins. I've had better luck with this method than just using an ice pack, because you can also massage and be a little more spot specific with it. Also, running on a softer surface can help. With the weather getting better in these parts, you could run on grass and not the road. Or even go to aqua-jogging. --------------- Corey, as far as spin night and then the next AM, it's fine. YOU control what you do in class. No reason that if one tears your legs off that you have to get them torn off again the next morning. |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got up to swim today and discovered that my kitchen/basement had flooded from the 'fridge. Lame. Missed my swim window, so now my choices are swim tonight/spin tomorrow or swim/spin tomorrow. I don't want to burn myself totally out because I am skiing on Saturday (my ski skill-set is suffering a lot this year, first time out in several years.) I hate when life messes with my workouts! I am such a crabby mom if I don't make it to the gym! |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay, please feel free to e-roll your eyes at my bike questions. I am still shopping around (would love to get my bike and have it all fitted and ready to go mid-feb.) I have a few questions: Do I really need STI shifters, or can that be for my big-girl bike I get in a couple of years? How important is name brand parts? I am looking at an aluminum bike with 24 gears but the derailleurs are "micro shift?" I have never heard of that brand at all. I am also eyeing one with Shimano parts, and I have heard of that. Also, I am a semi-tall blonde, so what color would best suit me? I kid, I kid, I don't care what color my bike is!!! I guess I only had those two questions! |

Doesn't prevent the water getting in there but has always dried it out nicely for me. |
