Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, welcome to 2012.. Made up my mind to get the year off on the right foot so did what I could being a sunday, holiday and having to work. No crutches this year. I can make the time to do something which is better than nothing no matter how small it may seem. Plan to run 6 days a week for the next 2 months leading up to a half mary trail run. They arent long runs, but its building base that will guide me through the year. Happy New Year all and if you need anything just pm me. Iam on here tons trolling. |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I feel great, I did my first week of training. I have a long long way to go. I am currently 260 lbs, well 255 after this week (yes).I slowly gained about 5 pounds a year since my first son was born 15 years ago, So I know it will take time to get the weight off. I ran/walked 5 days at a pace that worked for me, finished off the week with doing sub 45 min 3.1 on the treadmill. Swam 300 meters yesterday. Very excited, I was a former cross country runner in college , so I have a very good sense of the running part. But that was then this is now, I can't say I loved every min of the work out, but I did love looking at that screen and seeing what I did, and I did love seeing that scale. My motivation has been watching ironman and marathon races on my iPad, not just the winners but the everyday person, I am so amazed by them. My goal this week is to run 5 days, 45 mins a day and swim 2 days, and the kids are back at school and I am back to work, after a week off. Now comes the challenge. Happy New Year everyone. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great Job Cal on a solid week. Keep it up and the it will all pay off. I also too enjoy watching the everyday people that run IM's. Everyone has a different reason for putting themselves through so much. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First Monday of the year! Got up at 0400 to head to the pool. The kids had school today so my husband met me at the gym after he got them off to school. We then were able to run/work out together! I'll probably get on the trainer this afternoon for some cycling! Hope everyone had a great day! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jenfence - 2012-01-01 6:56 PM Decided to start the year off right and get on the bike. It was beautiful here for January so I rode outside instead of at the Y. I am a good 10-15 mins. slower on the road, even though it was mostly flat. Is this pretty typical? And I was 4 mins. faster than a month ago - how much time can you realistically shave each month with training? I am hoping to get 3-4 mins. faster each month until May. I think some of it is confidence. You take road conditions, traffic, driveways, intersections, etc. With time you will see good results. Try to avoid getting caught up with per month results and just ride your ride. Personally, the roads where I live are for the brave. People have zero respect/concern for riders. So I use more caution and just try to get the time in because you cant simulate pot holes, rocks, dogs, cars, etc on the trainer/spinner. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Guys, I have also been away for a few days having THE TIME OF MY LIFE! in beautiful Noosa on the Sunshine Coast here in Australia. Best New Years Eve of my life! I also cracked another world record - so this makes it three - I lost more weight over the New Year period! I hit the magic 103kg which means that I have officially lost 10kg. It has taken me a little while to get there, but I am so stoked. While I was away I was able to get in some walking and also training down at the beach. By Lord swimming in the ocean is a far cry from swimming in the pool... who invented currents and rips?! Is there any advice for someone who does all their swimming training at the pool to prepare for the ocean swim? I am off to bed now (it's 11pm) and I plan on waking up early to get in a walk and a swim before work. Hope you all had fantastic New Years Eves.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() katartizo - 2011-12-31 12:54 PM Starting to prep for my first Tri in 6/2012. Nutrition is not great and trying to drop weight while starting to train. I typically only have coffee for breakfast - any suggestions as I tend to grab and go. Would using a protein shake (muscle milk) or something like this be a good staple to start the day? This is a lifestyle change for me so I am going to ask the 'dumb' questions as I pursue this lifestyle change.
Bryan, I think the idea of eggs is a great one. Whole grain toast, berries, a nutritional supplement such as Myoplex or Boost would also come in handy. They're good for you and have lots of energy. I was also sponsored by Wheaties FUEL cereal last year... I think that's one of the best pre-race/pre-workout meals you can consume. I got like 4000 mini boxes as part of my deal- if you want, PM me your address and I'll send you some. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here's a tri I'd highly recommend for anyone new: I have done this a few times now (I'm a member at Lifetime) and it's a fun event! It's a good way to get the basics down before you go out and do a real race. |

I saw that there will be one here in a few months and my husband and I plan on doing it. Sounds like it is fun and you pretty much do what you can during the alloted time, correct? My biggest concern is not being able to adjust the bike correctly... Edited by mmez 2012-01-03 3:24 PM |

Only adjustment you can make is the saddle anyway. They lock down the tension so everyone has the same resistance, and you cannot change during the "race". New user ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Matt and Noob. My average time right now for 12.43 miles is 50 mins. (indoor on the bike). Outdoors it's 1:10, so that’s 20 mins. slower. My first tri in May is this length, plus my legs will fall off if I go any farther. I think Noob is right, the “obstacles” outdoors can slow me down as I am still getting comfortable riding around cars and in the wind. But the route is really flat and not heavily traveled. I am using a mountain bike, but I’ve heard it doesn’t make much difference for a beginner. On the indoor bike I can go steady the whole time, but outdoors I get slower at the end. My goal (with no experience to base it on) is to do the bike portion in 45 mins. But that might not be possible. Would a trainer be better than a gym bike to get experience? Also, I think the bikes at the gym might not be as realistic – both the position you ride in and therefore the muscles you are using, and the calibration. I notice that I can do more miles in the same amount of time on one bike compared to another, although it’s pretty close. Not sure how well the stationary bikes match with the GPS I am using for outdoor rides. I have been logging my workouts on the BT log app for my iPhone, and I have synced them, but not sure how to make sure they show up on the website? Thanks again! |

Jen, Your training is showing up in your log- click on the "training log" icon to see everything you entered. As far as the stationary vs. mountain bike- every bike is different and will fit you differently. Since I'm the mentor here, I'll give you my honest opinion, too. If you can at all possibly get a road or triathlon bike, do it. Mountain bikes are slow and heavy, and you're going to trash your legs for the run on one. I'm not sure who told you there's no difference for a beginner, but they are wrong. There's just no comparison between a road/TT bike and an MTB. If you can't afford one or aren't sure you will stick with the sport, by all means don't invest the money. However, if you want to have your best race a decent bike is going to make all the difference in the world. |

We have a local store here that rents bikes. They have all types to include hybrid, mountain, and road. If you bring your own pedals they will put them on for you and even give you a short fitting to make sure the bike is at least somewhat suited for your size/measurments. I had a "Beach cruiser" that I would ride the 1 mile back and forth to work (during the 3 non-snow months in North Dakota) and I could tell a difference last year when I started looking and test-riding road bikes. They felt SOOO fast. Perhaps you can find a shop that would let you test-ride a bike and/or rent it to see how different it really it. Good luck! |

I just got my first road bike for Christmas, and haven't done any tri's yet so my input is only a first impression but the bike simply FLYS compared to a mountain bike If money is a limiting factor, hit up craigslist! OR if you can't find any good deals, at least switch your tires to a skinnier slick tire. I did some bike commuting during college on a mountain bike, and just switching to slicks help out a lot on efficiency. Good luck |
