Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I attempted to run today post injury only to find that my injury ain't that 'post'..... I told myself at the beginning of my run that I would run/walk, that if things felt sore then I would just walk or call it quits..... I found that the pain was intermittent therefore walked when I needed to hence the timings on my blog. I only have a month till my race so I'm really hoping that this clears up pretty soon..... Gonna try and get an appointment with my chiropractor tomorrow to get it tweaked and try and run on it again maybe Friday. This really needs to bugger off!! Lol |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats on your first triathlon! I'll read your report here in a few hours. This is Day 3 of being rained off the bike. I don't mind biking out in a light rain but it's been a heavy down pour with strong winds. So today I spent one hour on the trainer. I set my goal high and after an hour my legs felt like jello and concrete at the same time. But it felt great to set a high goal then punch right through it. Looking forward to my workout tomorrow. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone! After taking Tuesday off, I've been fairly productive, swimming and biking yesterday morning. I didn't wake up early enough to fit in my workout this morning, but I plan to do it after meeting a friend for dinner this evening. Heather - Happy to hear you were able to sign up for your 5K, and you're welcome, I was happy to donate. Good luck with training and fundraising! Amanda - So sorry to hear you're still dealing with your injury. They can be so frustrating! Rest up, and hopefully you feel better soon. Roxanne - Congratulations on finishing your first race! Are you officially addicted to tris at this point? If so, when's your next race? Beth - We've been having crummy weather here too for the past several days. It definitely is not helping my motivation! It's not supposed to really clear up until Sunday. Hopefully you guys are set to see some nice weather before then... Amen to the bad weather, its been sapping my motivation this week. I've been putting off a harder run that I had on the schedule for Tuesday but moved due to rain/cold. Looks like tomorrow is the day for it no matter what- Saturday is a 40ish mile bike and Sunday is another run day. Hope everyone is having a good week. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got rained out of my run this morning so it was a good swim instead. I'm planning on a 50 mile bike ride with the same guy that I did my last long ride with. Lifting in the gym has been great too. I understand that lifting plate weights causes a lot of debate here but I need to be able to lift for my job. Anyway since I'm stuck inside all week the weights have become a way to get my frustrations out. Hope everyone is staying dry and on the road to recovery from various illness and injury. Beth |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think I am finally back on track after taking it a bit easier b/c of my adductor issue for a couple of weeks. This past week I ran and rode pretty much like normal and it didn't seem to aggravate things any worse (only got 1 swim in, but that's ok). So, my hope (rain please go away!) is to potentially ride the course of my Tri in early June tomorrow morning. If not, I hope to at least get out on the greenway a bit. So, I'm starting to feel a little more hopeful that this adductor slowing me down won't impact my Tri too terribly, (fingers crossed as I really get back to pushing hard all stays ok!) I have 4 more full training weeks to go (5 until the event)! I can't wait as my sister is coming in from VA to do this Tri with me, I've yet to do a Tri without her (aside from and indoor tri), so it wouldn't be the same if she couldn't come : ) This will be the first OWS for both of us!
I just had to share b/c it has been so cute! My 5 year old daughter hasn't ever seen me in a Tri (hopefully, she'll be at my June Tri since it is local), but she knows I do them and has been obsessed with "practicing" running, biking and swimming as of late. She keeps saying she wants to do a Kid's Tri. She isn't quite ready for the swim completely independently, but I just learned of a "preschool" age range Tri in Charlotte, NC (a 4 hour drive) at a YMCA for ages 3-5 where the parents can "assist" the child in all the legs, it's just a 25 yard swim, a .25 bike and a 200 yard dash, so fun! If only the darn thing didn't conflict with my Tri schedule : ( We could make it a family affair as my son will be 3 by then, too LOL The Kid's Tri events closest to us start at 6 or 7 years old, so we've got another year to wait unless I change my schedule a bit. It would be a riot to do with her!!! |

It is so much fun to see kids embracing exercise. Let's hope that this bug sticks with them! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The weather finally cleared here in Boston- got in a wonderful 2.5 hr ride today. This was my first real outside ride this year, and it felt great to be out. Yesterday was a 2,000 yard straight swim, my longest ever. It was not quick, the last 500 yards were painful and so slow. But I like this swim, as i get better at it over the summer, I think it will help me fill more confident about my two Olys. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Went mountain biking this morning- a short ride just to get back on the bike after a few years off the trail. Had a tough 10k run this afternoon. It was good news though- I had to take about a minute break in the middle of the run (my body was just done), and i still only finished about 3 sec per mile off my best 10k pace back in November. So, I think my speed is slowly improving. My total for the week was about 9 hours of training, which is a record for me. There are muscles hurting that I didn't know I had. Hope everyone had a great weekend! Edited by williemc432 2012-05-06 8:34 PM |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() First outdoor ride of the season tonight on the Timberman course (the tri I am running here in NH in August)...should be interesting being a first timer and all to see what the course is like for the sprint. I've been doing my strength training up until now with some running mixed in once per week, but I guess now is the time to kick it into real training for this summer. Been reading a lot of Friel's "Your First Tri" of late...very interesting stuff. Anyone else read it or his other books before their first? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well friends, I did it..... Finished my second triathlong and first HIM. I will put up a race report later, but here are some of the highlights: Finishing was of course the icing on the cake. It took me 6:33 to finish which is right where I thought I would be. My nutrition was good I felt good the entire race energy wise, but not hydration wise. I had a few issues, first, my gears were giving me some problems at first and had to adjust them. The bag I bought for the front of the frame (bento box) was too bid and was rubbing my legs so I had to stick in in my shorts the the entire ride. I got a flat tire about 2 miles in. It was hot as can be and I did not drink enough water on the bike which led to bad cramps on the last part of the bike and run. About .5 miles into the run, my quads and hamstrings locked up on both legs. Ended up having to run walk the 13 miles because of the cramping. great experience at the end of the day. Very difficult course. heard some people say they were 40 minutes slower in Knoxville than they were in other half distance events. Very happy at the end of the day.... |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats, Eddie, on your first HIM! Sounds like despite some of the issues you experienced you still had a good experience. Nice job!
I had hoped to get out and ride the course for my June Sprint over the weekend, but that plan went down the drain when my daughter woke up with a fever Sunday morning and as I was walking out the door thought she was going to vomit. So, since that would have meant a 30 min drive up, a 12 or 13 mile ride at my slow pace, and a 30 min drive back, I compromised a bit to not leave my husband alone for about 2 or so hours to deal with getting the kids up and fed, all the while dealing with a sick kid (luckily, never vomited, just a fever all day, seems to be on the upswing now) So, I just rode a little around a neighborhood nearby that has a few good hills (well, steep to me, anyway LOL!) and then did some hill repeats on a steady incline in my neighborhood. It gave me a chance to start to learn my new bike a bit and get used to shifting etc. I probably only rode about 6 miles, though, so that sort of sucked, but such is life as a Mom, right? My goal to ride the course was really to practice the hills as there are a couple, so at least I worked hills. I ran for about 5 minutes post bike just to loosen my legs up, but it was already like 80 degrees and I hadn't planned on running so I didn't have hydration and figured I should quit while I was ahead and go check in with my kids and DH and make sure all h*ll hadn't broken loose while I was gone (don't get me wrong, my husband is an awesome dad and super hands on, but I felt bad bailing on him) Since my daughter was sick, she hadn't woken us up at 6:30ish as she usually does so we had all slept in unknowingly so my day started much later than I'd hoped hence the heat by the time I was trying to run. Tomorrow, I hope to go to my gym's Run Club run for the first time, I had wanted to do so before but they wouldn't allow it if your child was in the child center as you leave the club, but they just lifted that restriction (YIPPIEEEEEEEE) so now I get to squeeze in an outdoor-non-treadmill run. I'm just a little excited as I so prefer outdoor running! Fingers crossed my daughter is well enough to go back to school tomorrow and my son (or I) don't catch what ever she had. I really need to acclimate to running in the heat/sun a bit, too, so this is great on so many levels! I'll probably swim or bike as well. Happy Monday! I hope everyone has a great start to their week! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone! Sorry, I realized I haven't posted in days. I guess I got caught up in the end of the week, then I was gone to VT all weekend, so time has gotten away from me a bit. I was at least doing a good job training during that time. Friday, I did a swim workout that involved a couple of 100 yard intervals. I managed to hit 2:00 for one! Still not fast on average, but that's probably a PR for me. Saturday, I had to do a track workout that involved running 1600 meters as fast as I could. I managed that in 7:02. At this point, I was a bit disappointed that I didn't break 2:00 on the swim, and that I couldn't break 7:00 here, but I suppose they give me something to improve upon. Finally, I went on an awesome 45M ride yesterday. That involved one Category 4 climb in the first 15M. The backside was fun though, as I hit a bit over 40 mph! Beth - Glad you were able to get good weather to ride outside this weekend too. As for weight lifting being controversial amongst triathletes, I say if you have the time and the inclination for it, there's nothing wrong with it. I think the stigma revolves around the argument that it takes away from time that you could be using to SBR train, but it sounds like you're getting in plenty of that too, so you should be fine. Heather - That's awesome your sister is doing your upcoming race with you. I'm sure you guys will have a great time. Hopefully your daughter is feeling better, and you'll be able to get in your group outdoor run. It's so much better than running on the treadmill! Sorry it's so hot though, running in the heat is rough... Will - Sounds like you took advantage of the nicer weather and got out to ride this weekend as well. Bummer we have more rain headed our way for this week. I'll take it though, as long as it clears out by the weekend again. The Season Opener is this Sunday! Roxanne - Glad you're feeling better healthwise, although that's too bad your knees are acting up. Take care, and I hope they feel better soon! Mitch - Out of curiosity, I looked up the Timberman sprint bike, and it looks like it covers the beginning of the 70.3 course. Unfortunately, I don't remember much about it, but it sounds like you'll be getting out to experience it firsthand soon. At least you should be skipping the hill at mile 10. That was rough! Eddie - Congratulations on finishing your first HIM! Way to push through some adversity to do so too. I would flip out if I had gear issues and a flat on the bike, not to mention dealing with cramps. Racing in the heat is always rough, and it's difficult to find a hydration balance. I'm sure you were far from the only one dealing with that issue. Looking forward to your race report. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been taking advantage of the great weather for the past few days. Its nice to finally have some sunshine and dry ground. Yeserday I went for a 41.5 mile bike ride over moderate to steep rolling hills. The more I do the hills the easier they seem to become. The first 20 miles I was riding into a moderate and constant head wind but on the way back was fun. I felt like the hand of the Almighty was pressed agaist my back the whole way back. On one will I was going down at 30+ mph and had so much speed I got up the opposite hill with little effort while maintaining speeds of 22 mph. This was a first for me, going that fast and doing it in aero. My only thought was "Don't fall!"After I got off and took a shower I was amazed how good my legs felt, no stiffness or soreness. Today I ran 5.5 miles on the local trails. The weather is just perfect and it was a joy being outside feeling the breeze and sun on my face. I'm keeping my speed a little slower than I normally do because I don't want to injure my hip again. And for the first time I'm actually feeling ready for my first HIM in July, but first I have an Oly in a few weeks that I also feel ready to tackle head on. I took advantage of a Swaggle deal and got a Mio watch with a continous heart rate monitor. While running I noticed that my heart rate was at 200! I also noticed how quickly my heart rate decreased and how dispite the high heart rate I continued to feel great and not winded or tired. I have to do some more research on this but I'm thinking I've SBR'ed myself into the 'over trained' realm of things. Any advice or comments for others would be greatly welcomed. Will-Congrats on your first HIM! You were able to push though problems and finished. That alone deserve credit. Do you plan on doing an IM in a year or so? -Beth |
